| May 18, 2002- A little over a year ago, a movie starring Ashley Judd, Hugh Jackman, and Greg Kinnear came out that was so bad that I don't even remember the title. Although the movie itself was insufferable, Ashley's (we're on a first name basis) character did have an interesting theory....The New Cow Theory. Basically, the male cow never wants to have sex with the same cow twice...he always chooses the new cow as opposed to the old one. Ashley's character, struggling with being dumped for an aging Ellen Barkin, figures that men think and behave like their bovine counterparts. The new girl always has advantages over the old girl because of the promise of new sex. Of course the climax of the movie attempts to argue this theory is a fallacy, since Hiugh and Ashley end up together at the end. Of course to Hugh, Ashley is the new cow... I ahve thought about it a lot and I believe that the New Cow theory has a lot of merit, but maybe not for the reasons that the movie suggests. First, to strike down a common fallacy, the appeal of the new girl is not strictly sex. True, most guys, if they are honest, would admit to finding approximately 50 percent of the female population sexually attractive. But the allure of the new girl is so much greater than that. The new gives you an opportunity to reinvent yourself...she hasn't yet seen you falling down drunk, or hasn't had to comfort you with one of those "it happens to everyone" lines. She has not met your family, and better yet, you have not had to meet hers. You haven't told her your twenty best high school/college stories that the old girl knows so well that they sicken her. (FYI: Every guy has approximately 20 stories that we use to make ourselves look good, are buddies look fun, or to make ourselves appear foolish if the timing is right to be self-depreciating. When we are in packs, we tell, and we retell, and we retell....).Sure you probably want to sleep with her, but that's not the important part...the chase is. It is the typical journey is greater thanreward case. With all of these advantages, it is a miracle any guy stays in a relationship. That is because the old girl has some inherent advantages of her own. First, the new girl is never as perfect as she is initially cracked up to be. There will always be immediate areas where she can't hold a stick to your old girl. Second, the old girl already fits into the fabric of your life. She knows your friends, family, your routines, your nerdy quirks (I play fantasy sports...that is never fun to hide for the first few months of a relationship) This leads to an extraordinary comfort level. Thirdly, and most importantly, the old girl has a history with you. This can be a good thing or a bad thing ,depending on the personalities involved. It is unreal how many couples I know have stayed together well after the relationship had run its course, for the simple fact that they were so used to each other...so inescapably linked. In my relationship, I feel like history is a good thing. Our history together has given me such a strong friendship, love, and respect for her hat our bond is tighter than ever. The new cow vs. old cow debate is one of those unavoidable confrontations that we all must face at some point in our lives. Depending on your perspective, it can appear as if either the new or the old holds all of the cards. Honestly, I think they both have strong hands...it all comes down to who knows how to play the game better. |
