                                               ARCHIVES
May 10, 2002-  Today I received a wedding invitation from my best friend in high school. This didn't exactly come as a surprise...I am a groomsman...but the result was jarring nonetheless. This friend is the second of three of my friends from high school to be married after getting engaged in the last 18 months. This isn't just any three of my friends...they are probably the three that I hung out with the most in high school. It really wonder, "what the heck are they thinking?"
This rush to marriage truly has me frightened. I took Kiley to the first of the three weddings last summer, and all the fiancees continually reassured her that, "don't worry hun, the ring will come soon." But in all honesty, the ring isn't coming soon..if it ever did come, it wouldn't be at least for another 3-4 years.  This has nothing at all to do with Kiley, it just I am starting to think that the whole institution of marriage is completely artificial...it was a social construct created centuries ago. How and why did marriage become such the norm? It certainly isn't because man is built for marriage...we are not. To make a marriage work, it takes an incredible amount of self-restraint and self denial. If marriage, or living in any form of monogomous pairs, was meant to be, it wold not be as difficult as it is. People are afraid of growing old alone, so they buy into marriage as their salvation. It is a commonly stated fact that half of all marriages end in divorce. I don't think this is because we are choosing our spouses wrong.  I think most people marry with decent intentions, but as the ideal fades into reality, single-minded devotion becomes more difficult. People have a romantic ideal in there head, but aren't always willing to work at it. I think we might be better served if we just gave in to our nature and didn't put all of our hopes and dreams into one other person. No one person can be anyone's everything.
This isn't to say that I disapprove of my friends' weddings...not in the least. I think Brooklin and Zack are wonderful together and Wes and Stephanie are perfect for each other. I'm pretty sure my third friend just got engaged because it was the trendy thing to do, but that is another story for another day. I think these couples are as good for each other as any two people can be...I'm just not sure if that is enough. And even if it is...what's the rush?
