The question of the day is...
Will it be Steve, Cuttino, and Yao?

May 20, 2002-  Ok, I was all prepared to write a conspiracy theorist column tonight blasting David Stern and the NBA. I was going to talk about the miracle of Patrick Ewing going to New York, the impossiblity of Orlando getting the number one pick two years in a row, the coincidence of the Wizards getting the number one pick while the league was desperately trying to convinvce Jordan to come back. I was ready to criticize the whole lottery process and call Stern a cheat...until it happenned. The 5th pick goes to...the Denver Nuggets. The Rockets had moved up!! And ten minutes, later, the 2nd pick goes to...the Chicago Bulls! Houston picks first!! Houston picks first!! All of a sudden I'm the lottery's biggest proponent. I'm fickle, so sue me. Here is what should happen with the first 15 picks:

1)
Los Angeles Clippers (trade with Houston) - Jay Williams, Duke.I love Jay Williams. I think he'll be a superstar, almost from day one. In my daydreams, I see a Stevie and Jay backcourt, with Rashard Lewis at small forward after a sign and trade involving Cuttino and Seattle. Realistically, Houston cannot afford to alienate free agent-to-be Steve by taking another point guard and trading his best friend. It looks like Houston may take Yao Ming, but I think they should look for a third option..trade out. Houston should trade this pick and cap fodder for Lamar Odom and the number 8 pick. The Clips will do it because they aren't happy with Lamar's pot-smoking and they are a point guard away from making a serious run at the Western Conference playoffs. Houston needs a small forward who can play now and there isn't one who is Number one pick worthy.

2)
Chicago Bulls - Yao Ming, China. Jerry Krause gets his man, a HUGE lineup of 7-5 Yao, 6-11 Tyson Chandler, 7-0 Eddy Curry, 6-8 Jalen Rose, and 6-7 Jamal Crawford should be interesting to watch.

3)
Golden State Warriors - Mike Dunleavy, Jr., Duke. They were desperate for Yao or Williams, will have to settle for Dunleavy. They need a small forward or a point guard, I'm betting they aren't sold on drafting another semi-point guard like Dajuan Wagner after the Larry Hughes experiment.

4)
Memphis Grizzlies - Dajuan Wagner, Memphis. White Chocolate, your days are number. I think Wagner will be a superstar, he is my favorite upside player in the draft.

5)
Denver Nuggets - Caron Butler, Connecticut. Denver need about everything, with the possible exception of a power forward if McDyess gets healthy. Butler is the best player available.

6)
Cleveland Cavaliers - Drew Gooden, Kansas. They need everything except a point guard, and make the safe pick here of Gooden. Andre Miller, there last unsexy pick certainly paid off.

7) New York Knicks - Curtis Borchardt, Stanford. Knicks wanted Yao, Jay, or Dajuan, but will settle for the most polished center. The Knicks NEED a center, but Borchardt has journeyman written all over him

8) Houston - Nikaloz Tskitishvili, some European. The Rockets have been craving a European wing with upside for years. Fortunately, the Knicks saved them from taking Borchardt.

9) Phoenix - Chris Wilcox, Maryland. Phoenix will be overjoyed if he slips this far. Can you imagine Wilcox and Marion running the wings on a fast break with Marbury in the middle? They'll dominate Sportcenter highlights.

10) Miami - Amare Stoudamire, every high school on the East Coast. Miami is an old team with a long rebuilding project ahead of it...here they should take a high schooler who will be ready to dominate about the time they are ready to compete again.

11) Washington - Qyntel Woods, Junior college. Woods has tons of talent, but is raw and inexperienced. Woods and Kwame Brown will have the opportunity to grow together. Fills the need of more athleticism.

12) Los Angeles Clippers - Chris Marcus, Western Kentucky. I bet L.A. trades out of this pick since owner Donald Stertling won't want to pay two lottery salaries. If they do keep it, they'll take Marcus, an Olowokandi clone, as insurance against losing the Kandi-man.

13) Milwaukee Bucks - Marcus Haislip, Tennessee.  Bucks are way too talented to be in the lottery, but are soooo soft. Haislip should help change that. If he is motivated, could be a Ben Wallace type physical presence.

14) Indiana Pacers - Kareem Rush, Missouri. I like Rush a lot, I see him as  a slightly worse version of Ray Allen. The Pacers have lots of talented young big man, Rush should fit in well as a third guard and, hopefully, become Reggie Miller's successor.

15) Houston Rockets - Juan Dixon, Maryland. Probably not talented enough to be drafted this high, but he is ready to play right away. He is tough and is a gamer, two things that the Rockets need. If the Rockets go this way, they'll be a niiiice ten deep,  but will still be week inside. Hopefully Eddie Griffin will hit the creatine over the summer so he can spend a lot of minutes at the 5...a guy can dream, can't he?
