May 30, 2002-  Thursday Thoughts are the column that I seem to be writing most consistently. They're easy because I can toss out all of the column ideas I have had for the week without having to provide so much support. Without more ado:

I saw Insomnia with Al Pacino late Monday night after a four-day span of an average of three and a half hours asleep a night. Nothing quite like watching a movie that tries to make you feel a character's sleeplessness when you are right there with him. I'm not sure if it is the sleep-deprivation talking, but I was pretty disappointed in the movie because my hopes were so high. There were a few parts (especially a Pacino v. Williams chase scene) that drew unintentional laughter because they were so bad...not exactly supposed to happen in a thriller. The ideas were good, I liked how all of the characters were flawed, but it absolutely did not deserve the overwhelmingly glowing reviews. But it is still worth a watch.

No better sporting experience for me than hearing "Enter Sandman" as Billy Wagner comes in from the bullpen. It almost always means the Astros are moments away from victory. He used to walk out slowly with his head down until the announcer said "Now pitching for the Astros, Number 13, Biiillllllllyyyyyyyyyyy Wagner!!!!" He would then go straight into a dead sprint to the mound. Very intimidating. Now he just jogs out there...not as good, but I still get goose bumps every time.

On the way back from watching the Billy Wagner entrance, my friend I got to talking about the oddity of group public nudity (such as streaking or skinny-dipping). No matter who you are with, there is somehow little to no arousal of any kind. If you were with the same person or people in a more intimate situation, there would no doubt be a high level of sexual tension. Don't get me wrong, this is a very good thing...no girls would participate in such events if guys couldn't control themselves. It is nice that our bodies are programmed to know the difference.

Here is a startling thought that I'm starting to accept---The Kings are probably a better, more talented team then the Lakers. If not for the game 4 meltdown, this series is already over. The Lakers are thinner than my hair, with 4, maybe 5 quality rotation players. The Kings on the other hand are seriously deep....Webber, Divac, Bibby, Christie, Superstar Bobby Jackson, Hedo, Pollard....and they have even played with the best shooter in the league, All-Star Peja Stojokovic.

And Mike Bibby is Jason Kidd with a jump shot, without the hype or the baggage.

Not to get too political, but the situation in Kashmir scares me much more than the terrorist attacks in September. It seems unthinkable that two nuclear powers are on the verge of war, but it is happenning. Very, very scary.

Steroids in baseball isn't a big issue for me...anyone who strives for a competitive edge pays for it later. It just needs to be standardized - either allow it or start testing.

Same with all drug use...if it were legal and regulated, I imagine there would be a decrease in drug-related deaths because the quality could be controlled.

I'm going off to a wedding this weekend, so there will be no columns until Monday, probably. Weddings with high school friends are actually surprisingly fun. You get to retell the same old stories that have been told a thousand time before and everyone always still ends up laughing hysterically. As Bruce Springsteen once sung, ahhh "Glory Days.
