| It's the World Cup!!!! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
June 5, 2002 - Halftime- It is 4:50 Am and I am downright giddy. This giddyness has nothing to do with a drunken night out, instead it is all about the game. What game you may ask? Oh, how about the unthinkable US-Portugal World Cup match which is currently taking place. US 3, Portugal 1 at halftime!!!!!! I can't even believe I am typing this. I also am incredibly nervous that I am jinxing the team, because like every true sports fan, I know that my every thought and action affects the outcome of this soccer match being held on the other side of the world. My giddyness is the tempered kind that only a sports fan knows...even though my side is up two goals at halftime over a team that they have no right being on the same field with, I am not satisfied. Far from it. I am a nervous, giddy, terrified wreck. Every Portugal run causes a lump in my throat. Second Half is starting....... FINAL - US 3, Portugal 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They did it!!! This is unbelievable!! Portugal is the fourth rated team in the tournament, the US finished 32nd out of 32 in the 1998 Cup. This is basically the equivalent of Portugal beating the US in basketball or something. And we did it without our 3 best players!!!!!! I can't even write rationally about how amazing this game was. In the second half, the US managed to just survive. They survived multiple terrifying crosses and corner kicks. They survived an awful Jeff Agoos turnover and an even worse Jeff Agoos own goal. They survived the loss of Eddie Pope, thire best defender, to cramps. This has to be the greatest United States soccer victory ever. The only problem is that this means I'm going to have to continue waking up at odd hours of the night to watch the US play. You should too...there is still plenty of room on the bandwagon. Nothing will top this game, but if it is anything close, it will be well worth the lack of sleep. |
