Dreams of a Francis-Williams duo die hard
June 27, 2002 - Thursday afternoon at work, might as well tell the world what I'm thinking these days. More random thoughts in 5..4..3..2..1..

My thoughts on the Yao Ming pick: I really, really wish the Rockets didn't make it. I know the league's centers are in short supply, I know he is an agile 7-6 and can shoot, I know that he will sell a lot of tickets. I do not believe he will have anywhere close to the same impact as Jay Williams or Caron Butler. I may be wrong, but it just seems like he has too many strikes against him...a huge language barrier, all sorts of pressure and red tape (both here and in China), an untested support system. Plus, he moth guys his size are huge injury risks. Couldn't you see him developing knee problems like Ralph Sampson, back problems like Rik Smits, or talent problems like Shawn Bradley? I really hope I'm wrong.

I have really had a lot of important decisions on my mind lately. After many long hours of soul searching, I have come to an incredibly important decision. I don't want to have to tell everyone individually, So I'll just announce since over this forum.....
From now on, I'll make all important decisions in my life by polling my friends. To start with, I have two polls for today:

1)
What should I do with my love life?

a) Stay single for awhile?
    b) Get back w/ Kiley and give my all into trying to make it work?
    c) Get me a new girl?
    d) Go gay?

2)
What should I do next year?

a) Go to law school in Houston?
    b) Go to law school somewhere else?
    c) Move to Europe?
    d) Try to get a job somewhere as a sports writer?

I'm going tubing and camping this weekend...it should be an experience. I can give my guarantee that a column will be written about the experience...and it won't be sappy like my Memorial Day one. To those of you going with me...consider yourself warned. I promise details.

As much as I'd like to think I'm not, I am such a lap dog for rock critics. If someone raves about a cd, I'll be there the next day to buy it. I don't always turn out to like it, but they often control how my dollar is spent.

Those of us who went to Rice...are you proud or ashamed? Just as the bumper sticker says, it often can announce that you are smart. But is it just me, or do people also tend to back away suspiciously when you claim Rice as an alma mater? Our geeky reputation precedes us.

I'm missing the World Cup final to go tubing? For some reason that makes me feel incredibly guilty.

I need more friends who don't speak English as a first language. I'm learning at work that when the topics of conversation and vocabularies are limited, you can't help being nice to a person. They don't know the words to say anything controversial.

I learned today that no matter how hard you look, you can't find yarn at Target. Don't ask. But maybe if I would have tried SuperTarget...

The Supreme Court has been busy lately...my quick takes on the rulings:
No executions of the mentally retarded - About fucking time. Can you believe that was a law until recently? Do people really think it  serves as a deterrant in those cases?
Only juries can give the death penalty - Another good one. The position of judge is a politically charged one in nearly every state, and they should not be able to have that Godlike, unilateral power.
School vouchers are ok - Bad, spells a slow, painful death for our already decaying public schools
Random drug tests in public schools are ok - This one is the worst, by far. Talk about an invasion of civil liberties...the schools place is to educate, not to police. Drug laws in this country are ridiculous and hypocritical as it is, this only makes it worse.
The Pledge of Allegiance is Unconstitutional (District Court) - I'm one of the 10 Americans who agrees with this decision. I hold separation of church and state to be on of the sacred founding principles...no one in government can afford to. This ruling followed the letter of the law, and is right, but will be overturned for political reasons.

Now that you all know where I stand politically, have a great day.
