July 17, 2002 -   Let me start by first admitting that this column is more or less mental masturbation for me...I'm working things out and felt the need to put my somewhat convoluted thought process down into print. Please feel free to skip it. I made a life decision, so I'll just toss it out into cyberspace so I don't have to tell people individually. Nice and lazy, huh?

Anyways, I have decided that I'm going to go to law school at U of H next year. The first question is, if law school is the option, why Houston? Well, primarily, because it is both cheap and easy. Not easy as in the curriculum (I'm sure that will be challenging regardless of where I go), but easy as in it doesn't involve me moving, searching for roommates, looking for friends, exploring a new city. All of that sounds exciting enough, yes, if I'd maybe made this decision in April or May like most people do. Right now, though, working hard and trying in school, for a change, seems like enough of an adjustment to keep me occupied.

Cheap is important for a multitude of reasons...first, paying 4 times cost for a similarly regarded school seems to me to be fairly ridiculous...that made it hard to justify going to one of the east coast schools. Second, I'm still very unsure if I want to be a lawyer...I can't imagine dropping a significant amount of money when I'm still so undecided. Third, if I do decide to become a lawyer, there is a pretty good chance that I would want to go into public interest law. If I do that, I'd likely make less money than I would working as a legal assistant in a small-to-midsized firm.

So if I'm so unsure that this is what I want, why am I even going to law school? I wish I could come up with some heartwarming reason, something intelligent or maybe a little grandiose. But anything like that would be false. Honestly, it is just my smartest, easiest, and most reasonable option right now. I know that reasonable may seem a little out of character coming from the guy who is one week removed from skipping work to go see
Undercover Brother. Let's just say that it is very calculated reasonability...I still have an angle. First, going to law school will present me with a lot more options. If I bummed out now and left to do the ex-pat thing, I wouldn't have good options if and when I decided to come back. If I actually ace law school for a year (which I think I'm capable of, and I fully intend to do) I could then choose to leave for a year if I wanted to and have options (continue at U of H, transfer, etc.) when I returned.

The other reason, which is closely related to the first, is that I would like to try to write for the school paper. Not doing that in high school or college is something I really do regret. I love to write, and I think I could become pretty good with some more training and practice. If I had a few bylines to my credit, maybe I could move into journalism or something similar someday. I realize that going to law school to write for the school paper is pretty fucking ridiculous, but it is one of my real reasons, and I'm sticking to it.

I really do like this city, though I know I am definitely in the minority on that point. I'll get to watch the Texans inaugural season, I'll get at least one more year out of my Astros, I'll remain the Houston base for my numerous out of town friends. I'll get to watch my little brother and sister grow up...Meaghan's only a year away from high school and I'm looking forward to playing the role of the intimidating older brother to her likely numerous suitors. If I said I was happy about this decision, I'd be lying. But I am content with it. It is kind of nice to do the intelligent thing for once.
Swept by the Pirates, at home...again.
