Four hobbits arrived just the other day
Came down to Bree from the Shire-way
There were strange folk around, and Strider, fey
They came to the inn on a busy day.
They were talking in the common room and it wasn't long
Till one was singing a Shire song, yeah; singing a Shire song.
"And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
A-hey-diddle fiddle and the man in the moon.
And the innkeeper's dog, was laughing when
They all got together then, yeah; you know they had a good time then."
Mr. Underhill sang a lot that day.
He'd had too much drink someone had to say
Now he's up on the table and dancing around
He's singing and dancing and being a clown
Having fun in the common room; nothing was wrong
With his singing a Shire song, yeah; singing a Shire song.
"And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
A-hey-diddle fiddle and the man in the moon.
And the innkeeper's dog, was laughing when
They all got together then, yeah; you know they had a good time then."
We laughed and cheered at the hobbit's play
His singing was great and we enjoyed the day.
Then he slipped and fell and disappeared.
And upset the patrons, who really feared
Strange folk in the inn, and it wasn't long
Till noone was singing that song.
"And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
A-hey-diddle fiddle and the man in the moon.
And the innkeeper's dog, was laughing when
They all got together then, yeah; you know they had a good time then."
It's been a year since they went away
The year's been bad nearly every day.
The four came back with Gandalf in tow.
From strange lands and wars, you know.
They stayed in the inn a whole week long
But they didn't sing that song, oh, you know they didn't sing that song.
As they went to the Shire, they turned to me. "We liked our time in Bree."
"And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
A-hey-diddle fiddle and the man in the moon.
And the innkeeper's dog, was laughing when
They all got together then, yeah; you know they had a good time then."
