New Orleans , Louisiana. (LA)

New Orleans is a fascinating place.  I have been here three times now, and passed through it a further twice. Set on the banks of the lower Mississippi, by now an immensely wide expanse of water, with its river boats as in the photograph below, the city sits on both sides of the river and is sandwiched in on its north side by Lake Pontchartrain. People come here for many reasons, with probably the best known being the Jazz music, the Mardi Gras Festival and the  perpetual carnival like atmosphere to be found in Bourbon Street. But there is much else that draws people to this city. For some it is the cemeteries, with their tombs all set above ground, a necessity in a city where the water table is only just below the surface of the ground. For others it is the voodoo and ghost legends and stories, experienced best by taking a guided walking tour. For me, it is undoubtedly the music, dancing in the street, the architecture of the buildings, and the comparative tranquility of the western end of St. Charles Avenue with the picturesque streetcars running along it.
