Hawaii, the only Island State, of the 50 states of the United States of America, is indeed a truly magical place. And my two week visit there, in December 2002 was truly an experience that I will never forget, and definitely one the most interesting places that I have ever been. I intended to spend time exploring Oahu for several days, then to fly to The Big Island, the largest and geologically newest of the Hawaiian islands and spend six days there. for the trip as a whole I had four main goals, namely to visit Pearl Harbor, go to the top of Mauna Kea, the highest of the mountains there, to walk out to one of the lava flows, and last but not least, to start writing a book for which I had first had the story line some two years earlier. (Somehow, the many other things that happen in my life had kept on getting in the way.) Happily I acheived all four goals. This page contains some of the many photographs that I took on that two week visit.

Those people who know me well, will be well aware that I care passionately about a number of issues, including the waste of natural resources, global warming, and the saving of the rain forests, to name some of the main ecological ones. They will also know that I care passionately about the benefits of education, the eradication of discrimination against those who are disadvantaged through no fault of their own, prejudice as a result of ignorance, and harrassment and persecution of people simply because someone else thinks that they have a right to do this. For this and other reasons a visit to Pearl harbor was a must and I spent nearly a day here.

Right If history has taught us any one fact, it is that it repeats itself. It also teaches us that no matter how many times it has happened previously, people never learn from history. Here is a good illustration of that very fact.

This photograph, of one of the gun turrets of the USS Arizona, which lies where it was sunk, in some 40 foot depth of water, is a stark reminder of what war does to the world. It was the attack on Pearl Harbor, by the Japanese, during which USS Arizona was sunk, that finally brought the United States of America into World War II. What is perhaps most frightening about all of this is that it all started in a sense because of oil, in that America at the time supplied a very high percentage of Japan's oil supplies. Desperately needing oil to continue to pursue its own questionable policies, (in that they were themselves invading Indo-China) and with America having frozen oil supplies to them, Japan felt that they had no other alternative but to attack America. And this, right here in Pearl Harbor is where that all started. One cannot help think of the world as it is today in comparison. But this time, it is America, having used up much of its own oil, which itself now has to import it, who seem hell bent on being the aggressor.
