CALIFORNIA (CA)

With its long Pacific coastline, many people tend to think of California as sun, sea and sand. And of course Hollywood, self appointed centre of the movie indusstry. (Well once upon a time we started to really believe that, until other countries in the world came to realise that they could make films that were just as good, and often on much lower budgets.) But there is much more to California than that. Yosemite National Park, in the Sierra Nevada region, (but still totally in California), The San Joaquin Valley area, one of America's biggest fruit growing areas, mountains that are snow capped for much of the year, and deserts along the border with Nevada in its South Eastern corner.

Below Everone's idea of California? The Pacific Coast photographed from the train somewhere between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara on 15th July 1998. Despite the fact that the train runs along the Pacific coastline for many miles in this part of California, taking photographs of the Pacific Ocean is remarkably difficult from the moving train.
