Overall Impressions

    COLORADO   (CO)

Colorado allegedly gets its name from the red colour of the river Colorado that runs quite spectacularly through the state, which in turn possibly got that colour from the stone that is predominent in parts of the State, the red sandstone. ('Colorado' means 'The Colour Red'.) Personally I do not think the river actually looks that red!
Colorado is also one of the states that is on the Continental Divide, (the point at which rivers tend to either run toward the east or toward the west.) On the railway route from Denver to San Francisco this is reached at Moffat Tunnel, high in the Rocky Mountains to the west of Denver.

The following States will be covered specifically in due course:
Arizona.
Arkansas.
California.
Colorado.
Florida.
Illinois.
Louisiana.
Maine.
Michigan.
New York.
Ohio;
Texas.
Utah.
Vermont.
West Virginia.
Wyoming.
and
Hawaii!

White water rafting on the River Colorado
This photograph, taken on 7th July 2001, is of the River Colorado east of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. As you can see, the river does not look particularly red. In fact by the time it reaches the Grand Canyon in Arizona, I think that it looks positively turquoise!
