John operated a 160 acre farm in Pleasant Valley, Green Township, Indiana Co., PA. He was a millwright, operating both a meal grinding mill and a sawmill, as well as a mechanic and also met most of the area's dental needs. John served as a Township Supervisor, school committeeman, and justice of the peace; he was also a lifelong Lutheran. John was originally a Whig but became a Republican in 1856 and attended one of Abraham Lincoln's inaugurations. He is reputed once to have shod Lincoln's horse when he was traveling between Indiana and Washington. John was buried in the Methodist graveyard in Cookport, PA.

In 1649 Madeline and her Huguenot family were living in or near Canterbury, England. They apparently moved back to Europe as her daughter Catharine was married in Manheim, Mann, Baden on 10 October 1655. Madeline, her husband, and younger children came to New Amsterdam from the Netherlands on 26 April 1660 on board the ship Der Verguige Otter (The Golden Otter).
