Catharine and her husband Louis DuBOIS, being Huguenots, left Europe for New Amsterdam to escape persecution. They are believed to have come to America on board the ship St. Jan Baptiste arriving 6 August 1661. In 1663 Catharine and her three children were carried off by Indians when they raided Hurley (now Ulster Co., New York) in retribution for wrongs done them by the Dutch governor of New Amsterdam. Catharine was reportedly tied at the stake to be burnt when rescuers freed her. The Indians are said to have delayed killing her to listen to her sing psalms, allowing her rescue. Catharine prepared papers which freed her Negro slave upon Catharine's death.
