Dark featured and black haired and black eyed, he was called "the black Henry". Heinrich ZIMMERMAN was an adventurous youth and enlisted as a soldier in the army of King Louis XIV of France for several years until the peace of Ryswick, 1696. He returned to Switzerland, studied medicine, and courted his future wife. In 1698, he sailed from Rotterdam via London to Germantown, PA and formulated plans to move there permanently with his family and friends before returning to Switzerland in 1700. In 1701 he finally married his wife and shortly thereafter participated in an armed rebellion against the government, receiving the title "Swiss Patriot". Because of this and also because he was a member of the German Reformed Church which was being persecuted at the time, he continued to try and enlist others to join him in his dream of going to America. His friends tried to kidnap his wife to prevent him from leaving. Hearing of this plot, Heinrich and his wife planned to escape across the lake at Luzerne by a small boat. As they were carrying out this attempt, they were ambushed by hussars. They escaped when Salome, Heinrich's wife, struck a pursuing hussar with the boat oar. The family thus escaped from Switzerland and traveled to England where Heinrich practiced carpentry. It is believed that William Penn arbitrarily changed the family name to CARPENTER at this time. Finally, in 1706 the family arrived for good in Germantown, PA and Heinrich practiced the medical profession. In 1710 Heinrich secured 200 acres in Lancaster Co., PA; in 1712 he got another 572 acres; and by 1717, he had around 3000 acres with a two-story dwelling.
