Peter arrived in America at Quebec, Canada in June 1776 on board a troop ship as a member of the Riedesel Regiment - German mercenaries (Brunswickers, not Hessians) hired out to the British during the Revolutionary War. In 1777 he was captured at the Battle of Saratoga with the rest of his regiment. Peter KUENNE (his name has also been given as KINNEY, KUNTZ, KUNZ, and COONES) received a disability discharge in 1777 at age 27. Virtually all of the captured German enlisted men were abandoned by both the British and their German overlords and left in America. In 1782 Peter signed a Prisoner Indenture Form and was indentured for three years to John Neykirk. In 1786 he was listed as a Freeman in Franklin Co., PA. Peter purchased a farm in Path Valley, Franklin Co. in 1791. He was married first to Rebecca Egan HAMMAN and, after Rebecca's death, to her sister Margaret.

James was a farmer in Path Valley and was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Doylesburg, Franklin Co., PA.

James and his family moved over the mountain from Path Valley to Cromwell Township where he operated a hotel. James was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Shade Valley, Huntington Co., PA.
