Petter, possibly with one or more of his brothers, arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Two Brothers from Rotterdam on 15 September 1752. He apparently was in New Jersey briefly and then Lancaster Co., PA before arriving in Frederick Co., MD in 1758. Petter was engaged in the iron-making trade in addition to farming and also served as a volunteer Colonial soldier in the British Army. With some degree of validity, it is reported that he was one of only 2-3 survivors in his unit of about 100 who were engaged in a fight near Detroit in 1763 in the French and Indian War. His survival was attributed to his height and strength. Petter and his family were in the Middleburg, MD area until 1792. In 1794 they were recorded in Tyrone Township, Huntingdon Co., PA; in 1796 in Morris-Woodbury Township, Huntingdon Co.; and in 1798 at Springfield Furnace (now Royer), Huntingdon Co., PA.
