John and his family moved to Horse Valley, Cumberland (now Franklin) Co., PA from New Jersey about 1781. In 1782 he secured land by deed in Horse Valley and received two allotments of 335 acres and 226 acres, respectively, in 1786. In 1787 he built the Three Mountains Road from Shippensburg, PA to Burnt Cabins, PA. By 1788 John owned an inn on this road and by 1790 also owned a saw mill and a grist mill. In 1794 President Washington stopped at the inn while returning from quelling the Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania. About 1790, John disposed of most of his holdings to his sons and moved to Fannettsburg, Franklin Co., PA. John was buried in the Skinner burial plot in Horse Valley.
