Andrew was born about the time of the family's arrival in Philadelphia on 5 September 1738. He may have been born immediately before or after the voyage or even on the ship Winter Galley itself. Andrew remained in Mount Joy Township, York (later Adams) County, PA as most of his family moved west. His farm was known as "Andrews Burgh" and "Speedwell". He was known as both a farmer and a potter.

After their wedding in 1803, Adam and his bride moved to Greencastle, Franklin Co., PA where Adam practiced his trade as a blacksmith. In 1807 he acquired land in Peters Township, gave up blacksmithing, and developed extensive orchards. When he moved to Franklin Co., Adam was active in the German Reformed Church but soon changed to the Reformed Mennonite Church. He was buried on his son-in-law's (Michael RYDER) farm.
