Squadron History:

"The Heartbreakers are the strong arm of the REF. We are the first to go
into harm's way. Our primary tasks are recon and assault. As hunters our
sights are clear, our hides are tough and our teeth are sharp. We enter into
the gates of hell and emerge unscathed.
"
--1st Lieutenant Mark "Bishop" Sanderson

Rebel activity was on the up rise, and the newly re-settled colony on Mars had been stripped of its defenses even while Pirates continued to raid the small scattering of settlements.  Eventually the raids turned violent, and one-hundred thirty-four colonists lost their lives in a brutal attack on a remote Martian Outpost.  Retired UNSAF Colonel William “Wild Bill” Houston (a descendant of the Sam Houston of legend) was outraged by these acts of violence, and began a crusade to get some kind of permanent space-capable defensive force assigned to Mars by calling in every favor, marker, and friend he had in the UN Military High Command.  What he got was a Squadron’s worth of VF-17 Nightmares.  He immediately began to fill the cockpits with every misfit and miscreant veteran he could find, as well as some of the best and brightest from the UN Spacy Academy.

Houston and his new squadron quickly became known for their "cow-boyish" and unorthodox but devastatingly effective style in combating the Rebel enemy.  They painted their Nightmares the crimson color of the Martian Outback, and when they were ordered to change them back, Colonel Houston is reported to have told the UN Spacy High Command to "Bite Me."  The words have become the squadron's motto.

Originally, this Squadron only went by the designation “Colonial Defense Squadron (CDF) – 1135”.  It was Houston’s belief that, as a newly formed Squadron, they should “earn” a name for themselves.  The story goes that a pair of hot-shot-Academy Pilots – cousins from what was once called “The Great State of Texas” – were actively pursuing the amorous activities that most Fighter Pilots are renowned for.  On one occasion, as the Squadron was lifting off for an orbital patrol, a female Traffic Controller made the comment, "You Heartbreakers be careful, there’s someone waiting for you down here.”  The comment was inadvertently broadcast across the planet's military TacNet.  From then on, anyone flying a crimson Nightmare was affectionately called a “Heartbreaker”.

The pirate threat escalated until a final space battle against a renegade Zentran ship.  While they succeeded in destroying the ship and thus ending the crises, many pilots lost their lives, including Colonel Houston.  Faced with the disbanding of their squadron, the last five surviving members were approved for transfer to the Macross-15 fleet.  The squadron was officially designated the TFAW-1135 Heartbreakers , and one of the surviving members, Ken Hart, as given the position of CO while his cousin became XO.

While stationed with the Macross-15 Fleet, The Heartbreakers served with distinction.  They were involved with several defenses of the City-15 from Varuta attacks.  They were the spearhead of the UN Spacy attack on the Varuta planet of Hydra, where they confronted a Protodevln.  The Heartbreakers assisted in the destruction of the Rebel Ark Royal Class carrier Starfist, in a battle in Pluto's orbit, and they were an integral part of an important rescue mission.

After that, the Squadron was reassigned to the Rim Expeditionary Forces – as both a reward for their excellence, as well as an acknowledgement of the REF’s need for experienced, innovative Fighter Pilots, who have shown an ability to “think outside the box."
