Soon after the Macross-7/Varuta War and the success of Doctor Chiba's Sound-Force experiments, it became increasingly apparent to the UN Spacy Admiralty that there was a clear advantage to having scientific research directly involved with the forces near (or even on) the front lines of the military structure.

Admiral Joseph Amberdate was given the task of forming the Special Science Forces, a loosely knit network of scientific units scattered across UN controlled space.  With the formation of the Rim Expeditionary Force, and the creation of the Aerie as the flagship of the SSF, Admiral Amberdate delegated the duties of administration over to Captain Jan Verkimmer.

Comprised of  top-level scientists in every field throughout known space, the Special Science Forces are charged with a singular duty… to explore, investigate, and discover as much as they can about the universe, for the benefit of all man-kind.

The Rim Expedition, a purely exploratory task-force, is the pinnacle of this mission.  Each member of the Aerie's SSF contingent is the head of a highly trained staff of researchers and technicians, covering a wide range of  such generalized fields as Planetology and Biology, and such specialized fields as Xeno-archaeology and Micro-biochemistry.  At the disposal of these personnel is the latest cutting-edge in scientific equipment.  This wide range of skills allows them to effectively explore any discovered site.
