| HISTORY You are invited to the Chateau today.... And thus starts your journey into the white building. Chances are, you'll enter via the Visitor's enterence in the Office WIng, but if not, you may get a chance to walk through the South Portico. The South Portico is the most famous enterance into the Chateau, and it's facade is one of the most regonizable in the world. Bulit during the renovations of 1905, the South Portico was designed to be a covered walkway ment for Automobiles, unlike the nort portico which was constructed fro horse carrages. Today, the South Portico leads into the Lower Catherine Hall, which is flanked by the State Dining Room on the left and the Blue Room on the Right. The Constriction of the South Portico began in 1902, just as the first floor basement was constructed. TODAY The President is often seen with visiting Dignataries posing on the South Portico before or after a Visit to the Chateau. It is also the Scene which graces the State Arrivial Ceremonies which take place on the South Lawn. The South Portico is also the place of happiness or sadness, as it is the enterence where the First Family enters the Chateau for the First time, as well as exit for the last. VISITING The South Portico is part of the Public tour, and many tourist tkae a Photo with the South Facarde as a parting shot as they walks out via the South Lawn. Look out for the Trellises which grace the Enterance way. It is indeed a fitting back drop for the end of the tour. |
| The Lower Catherine Hall leads in from the South Portico. Here the Presidnet recieves State Dignataries and guests. The famous portrait of the Sophyer Family hangs in the Lower Catherine Hall. Two crystal glass cut chandeliers from Lento illuminates the 20 meter long hall. The South Portico is the most pictured enterence of the Chateau. |
