| 1st Week of May VIVA VIGAN ART FESTIVAL Vigan, Ilocos Sur A festival in a setting replete with history and heritage, cultural treasures and reminiscences, the Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts has become one of the biggest cultural events in the north. Main attractions are the Calesa Parade, Comedia Streetdancing, Tres de Mayo Religious Festival, guided tours of Ancestral Houses, Santacruzan, Inabel Fashion Show participated in by bigwigs of Vigan and Balikbayans, food fairs and exhibits. 3rd and 4th Saturday of May SANTACRUZAN Dumaguete City and Ayungon, Negros Oriental respectively Regionwide A procession of biblical characters. It is in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary where the search and the finding of the Holy Cross by Emperor Constantine and Empress Helena were re-enacted. 3rd Sunday of May TABANOG FESTIVAL Cagayan de Oro City Kite flying competition of various categories for adults and children. Last Sunday of May SANTACRUZAN Malolos, Bulacan The procession in honor of the Holy Child is held in practically all barrios and cities in the whole province. Every parish church, however, celebrates the ending of the Flores de Mayo during the last week. Maidens carry emblems representing the attributes of Mary in her litany. Last Sunday of May CARACOL Kawit, Cavite An annual celebration wherein people perform a ritual dance to pay homage to their patron saint Mary Magdalene. Last Week of May FEAST OF SANTISIMA TRINIDAD Trinidad, Malolos, Bulacan Several carozas bearing antique oil painting of the Holy Trinity plus a caroza featuring three images looking alike are the highlights of the procession. May ANTIPOLO PILGRIMAGE Antipolo, Rizal A month-long celebration that brings devotees and pilgrims to venerate the Lady of Peace and Good Voyage which is enshrined in Antipolo church. Picnics to nearby Hinulugang Taktak. May CORDILLERA FLOWERS AND FRUITS FESTIVAL Baguio City A showcase of the various flowers and fruits found in the Cordilleras. May PAG-AKYAT Bagna, Malolos, Bulacan A riotous procession symbolizing the Ascension in heaven. The procession also marks the return of the Christo Tesuscitado from the Malolos church to the recamadera's house in Bo. Bagna. May (movable) MAY FLOWER Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte Coronation of Reyna Elena and Her court. May 2nd NATIONAL MANGO CONGRESS & 3rd CEBU MANGO FESTIVAL CEBU A project of the Visayan Chamber of Mango Industries, Inc. and the Rotary Club of Cebu-Guadalupe, this festival helps create awareness of techniques, processes and the economic opportunities mango farming offers. In celebration, various activities are lined-up, such as symposiums, seminars, food fairs, float parade, open show dance competition "Mango Tango" and bingo. Whole Month of May TAPUSAN Alitagtag, Batangas A monthly activity which starts with the offering of flowers to the Blessed Virgin capped by a procession of beautifully-crafted floats done by the town�fs artisans. The festival honors the Holy Cross. Whole Month of May FLOWER BLOSSOMS The Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village CDOC A display of blooming flowers endemic in the area with seedlings for sale at a very minimal cost. Whole Month of May BOHOL FIESTA Bohol A merry month of fiestas in the entire province of Bohol when residents of towns and barrios prepare sumptuous meals for relatives, friends and unexpected visitors. The fiestas, and there is one almost everyday, also made Boholanos come home. It is considered a mortal sin for them not to come home during fiestas, so they say. May 1-31 PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL Daet, Camarines Norte A festival showcasing the province�fs primary agri-product, its sweetest queen Formosa pineapple. Featured are colorful street presentation, art exhibits, agri-trade fair, cultural dances/shows and sports. It is topped by a food processing demonstration of pineapple ingredients. May 1-31 MAGAYON FESTIVAL Albay A grand Albayo celebration. Rooted in tradition, it is an expression of wealth and good living brought about by a good harvest, which is why it is always celebrated in May. Its origin having had religious overtones, had naturally absorbed the Catholic Maytime Santacruzan, Reyna Elena and Dotok as an integral part. It is highlighted by a series of street presentations of the legends and origins of the names of the different municipalities, each unique unto itself, which lends variety, especially a lot of color to each depiction. It is declared in a grandiose but elegant spectacle of profuse merry-making befitting, but the ground shows are held at the Provincial Capitol grounds in Legazpi City, the capital of the Province of Albay. Activities also include food festival, boat race, kite-flying contest and other special events. May 1-31 BALANGAY FESTIVAL Butuan City It is a month-long fiesta celebration of Butuan City. Several activities are lined-up for the celebration like Mutya Hong Butuan Pageant, Sportsfest and Santacruzan. May 1 PISTA�fY DAYAT Lingayen, Pangasinan Held in Lingayen, Pangasinan to celebrate the rich harvest of seafood in the province. May 1 ALISANGAN "BOA-BOAHAN" FESTIVAL Nabua, Camarines Sur A colorful cultural festival of pagan origin. Derived from the dialect "ALISANGAN", a word that described the characteristics of the people living in the early settlements. It is a festival showing fertility and thanksgiving. Fertility because Boa was taken from the young embryo of the coconut and thanksgiving for it was their only source of food after the ravage of floodwaters. May 3 CARABAO-CARROZA RACE Pavia, Iloilo A holiday when the Carabao is made the "King" for a day. It features a race among carabaos each pulling a bamboo carroza on a four hundred meter course. May 3 DEVOTION TO DIVINO TESORO Calasiao, Pangasinan This nine-day devotion culminates on its feast day on May 3. This devotion is unique and held in open court fronting the municipal hall. Like the Black Nazarene�fs of Quiapo, the Divino Tesoro is the object of veneration of the faithful from all over the province who come to Calasiao every Friday by the jeep load Page 2 |
