The Forty:

In every major city, in every major country, there is a group of individuals devoted to protecting their corner of the world from the things that go bump in the night. In New York it is the Forty.

Taking their name from the Forty Thousand Horseman of the Apocalypse, the Forty are not concerned with the easiest ways to protect humanity.  Or even the way that may save all of humanity.  They realize fighting to destroy all the Kindred is futile; they seek only to destroy the darkest of the soulless; the worst of the worst.  And they recognize that sometimes, deals must be struck, treaties must be made.  And that at times you have to lose a battle in order to win the war.

Headed by Arnand Jacobs, an Immortal who has led the Forty since the 1700's, the Forty are headquartered in the secret catacombs beneath St. Patrick's Cathedral.  Their War council, also known as the Brethren, are made up of both ancient Slayer Families: the Troisi, the Deveraux, the MacTavish, the Talbots) as well as more recent additions to the cause.  These members are elected every year, and advise Arnand on such situations as prophecies, Kindred politics, battle tactics, etc.  Arnand keeps close tabs on his council, as the various Clans have been known to buy influence with members, and corruption is always a threat to the integrity of the group.
