Arnand Jacobs

Leader of the Forty since the 1700's, Arnand was born in Spain in 1448. The youngest son of a noble family, Arnand's choices in life were few - join the King's army, or join the Church.  He opted to become a priest, and embraced his vows as a member of the Dominicans.

Father Arnand quickly rose to a position of prominence following Queen Isabella's establishment of the Inquisition, a force by which she hoped to convert all Jews and Muslims to Christianity.  Arnand was a confidante to Tomas de Torquemada, and a witness to the horrors performed under his command.  It was during this time that Arnand first became aware of the forces of darkness - for the Inquisition, too caught up in destroying innocent men, ignored the true horrors destroying the kingdom from within.  Arnand came face to face with vampires, witches, demons - all of whom he had been sworn to destroy but he was unable to convince his fellow Dominicans that the true evil they were supposed to be fighting lay with the monsters of the Otherworld, and not their brethren of different faiths. With his position and family gold, he began smuggling out those he knew to be innocent of any heresy. For his betrayal of the Faith, Arnand was denounced as a secret Jew, and sentenced to death.

After weeks of torture, the priest lay dying in his putrid cell beneath the city's courthouse.  As he breathed his last, he offered up a prayer to God - in order to pay for his sins against his brothers, he wished to be sentenced to 10 lifetimes on this planet. In this time, he would fight the true evil that he had found existed among men.  The next time he opened his eyes, he discovered himself buried in a shallow grave.  After digging his way out, Arnand went on to make good on his pledge.

After seeking out fellow Immortals, Arnand worked to set into motion what was to become the Forty.  They discovered the existence of The Families - those households who either by Fate or by choice devoted themselves to the destruction of the unnatural.  Such families as the Troisi of Italy, the Deveraux of France, and the Talbots of England.

By harnassing these families, as well as others, Arnand established his first War Council, which he called the Brethren, in honor of those whose lives he had not saved.  Through the Brethren, villages who had been plagued for centuries by vampires and demons were cleansed. Clan numbers decreased.  Thousands of lives were saved.

Arnand has lived through five of his pledged ten lifetimes working to establish the Forty.  As he has the ability to die like any mortal, he is a coveted target by the Council.  Like Immortals, he can be killed only by the removal of his head.  He is rejuvenated within a matter of minutes, hours or sometimes days - depending on the strength of his combator, and whether or not his head is buried near his corpse.  As destroying his head succeeds in rejuvinating him rapidly, as well as destroying the person responsible, it isn't recommended to try that when battling the Spanish priest.

Because of his chosen profession, Arnand has become an expert swordsman and martial artist. Getting a late start because of his life as a priest, he knew that to battle the creatures of the Underworld he would need to be able to fight. Finding the most celebrated duelists in Spain, he dedicated himself to the art of fencing. He became a swordsman of repute throughout Europe. Late in the 1700's when the French visited the Orient, they developed a fighting style called Savate. It consisted primarily of foot strikes and went well with the two sword style of Spanish dueling. Arnand soon mastered the complex art form and became even more dangerous to his opponents. But still the attempts of his life continued.

The most successful attempt at removing Arnand from the picture came at the hands of Malaikat Shuurajou, who buried his head at sea, and his body in the ground.  Yet, somehow he came back, much to the Shuurajou leader's displeasure.

Arnand no longer views himself as a priest, and has revoked his Dominican vows. He realizes that to perform the duties needed to destroy his enemy, he sometimes must bend the rules. However, he still leads a lifestyle similar to his monastic life, attending Mass every morning, and Prayers every evening.  There is no woman in his life at the moment, but Arnand hasn't lived a life of celibacy since his first death. A fact he finds more than a little embarrasing given his former dedication to the priestly vows.
