What Should Have Been

This poem written in remembrance of the time Jarrett
should have graduated from high school with is peers.

Today as I drove down the road
Celebrations aplenty I did see;
Young people in cars and trucks galore
Showing their graduation pride to me.

As I watched those teens so bold and proud
The tears refused to be restrained;
You should have been here with them this day
But to another life you were ordained.

You looked to this time with so much desire
To graduate from high school with your peers;
Instead you were taken away too soon
Leaving those you love to fight the tears.

What should have been can never be
You graduated sooner than we were to know;
The school you were chosen to attend
Is one we cannot imaging while living here below.

God sent His angel to pick the class
Of which you are now so much a part;
I want to see you in your cap and gown
Oh, I want to see that with all my heart.

But God's angel says that cannot be
Attendance at that ceremony not meant for me;
The Heavenly chorus from above
For only God and the angels to see.

What should have been here upon the earth
Will not happen as we had it planned;
So now I sit here and weep
No one knowing the grief with which I stand.

One day, my child, we can celebrate once more
Together on those streets of gold;
When at last I join you on Heaven's shore
After my story on earth has finally been told.
