974. 14.01.99 LONDON W1 - MARYLEBONE: Sec, GR, SAR & N. Members assembled at the GRs office before sampling Brakspears at the "GOLDEN EAGLE", Marylebone Lane, and Abbot/food at the "OLD DEVONSHIRE ARMS".

975. 01.02.99 LONDON WC1 BLOOMSBURY: Sec, SAR & N, WPR, GR. "BULL & MOUTH" (Bombardier/food) and "MUSEUM TAVERN".

976. 09.02.99 LONDON EC1 BARBICAN: SAR, COB. "CROWDERS WELLS", which was not crowded.

    977. 22.02.99 LONDON EC3 / E1 SPITALFIELDS CURRY TOUR: WPR, Sec, GR, SAR & N, Chair, Rick & Judy, Steve (LTSB). The party assembled for Theakstons at the "HAMILTON HALL", Liverpool Street Station, before proceeding to "BANGERS" (a stylishly simple converted basement, serving Davys Old Wallop from traditional tankards). A tour of the WPRs working neighbourhood was followed by Youngs at "DIRTY DICKS", Bishopsgate, and later some hot-blooded curries and Cobra lager at a Brick Lane balti house. The WPR, GR, Sec and Chair distiguished themselves and frightened the natives, by circulating as a group wearing identical white raincoats ("Reservoir SLBS"). An important constitutional amendment was passed at this Meeting, namely the re-instatement of the phrase "The WPR Shall Act" in the absence of the Chair or the Sec.

    978. 09.03.99 LONDON W1 FITZROVIA: Sec, WPR, Rick & Judy, TBA (of Barings), sundry PRS staff. Rick & Phil performed their traditional repertoire at the "DUKE OF YORK", to celebrate the 9th anniversary of its landladys appointment.

    979. 21.03.99 KENT CHIPSTEAD / KNOCKHOLT: Sec, GR. The GR met the Sec at his residence, and proceeded to Chipstead for Harveys and an excellent Sunday roast at the "BRICKLAYERS ARMS", a small hostelry pleasantly sited opposite a lake at the foot of the North Downs. Shepheard Neame was then sampled at the "HARRIER", Knockholt, a rather more spartan, but still pleasant downland inn. The Foreign Secretarys residence at Chevening was then inspected (as far as it could be over the fence), followed by a drive through the Darenth Valley villages to Dartford, and afternoon tea at Hall Place, Bexley. The Sec was then returned to Gravesend, with a diversion to inspect the new Bluewater shopping centre at Greenhithe.

    980. 15.04.99 LONDON WC2 BLOOMSBURY: Sec, BS, Paul. The members attended a recording of the "Now Show" at ULU (University of London Students Union), preceded and followed by visits to appropriately studenty pubs, the "MARLBOROUGH", (Courage), and the "UNIVERSITY TAVERN" (Speckled Hen). The Marlborough was full of intoxicated Chinese students, who appeared to have been sampling English culture by spending all afternoon there drinking bottled Newcastle Brown.

    981. 23.04.99 LONDON W1 FITZROVIA: WPR, BS, Sec, Rick & Judy, other PRS staff. Rick & Phil performed a St. Georges day concert (all English songs) at the "DUKE OF YORK", including a Dusty Springfield tribute selection professionally performed by Phils niece.

    982. 06.05.99 LONDON W1 WEST END: BS, Sec, Paul, Tim. Another "Now Show" recording at ULU, preceded by Adnams at the "MORTIMER ARMS", Tottenham Court Road.

    983. 08.05.99 LONDON SE1 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Chair, BS, GR, WPR, Sec. "ANCHOR", Caffreys, IPA. The Chair put in a brief appearance before returning home to install a new washing machine, and the WPR, BS and GR continued the meeting with some pizza research at Elephant & Castle.

    984. 23.05.99 EAST SUSSEX FAIRWARP / BLACKBOYS / EAST HOATHLY: GR, Sec. The Sec was met at Surbiton, and proceeded to the "FORESTERS ARMS", Fairwarp, a small village pub deep in (on?) the Ashdown Forest where Harveys Blackwood Ale, extensive free bar snacks and very substantial Sunday lunches were had. Research continued with Harveys Pale Ale at the "BLACKBOYS INN", Blackboys, a large and more refined rural inn resembling a Tudor manor house, with an exotic lunch menu, an expansive garden overlooking lily ponds, and a rather patronising attitude to customers being displayed by the bar staff. Alcoholic research was concluded with more Harveys at the "FORESTERS ARMS", East Hoathly, a rather paradoxical establishment combining very spartan dcor with a very exotic lunch menu (including ostrich steaks in whiskey sauce). The barman enthused to the only other customers about a large device over the bar formerly used to put wounded animals out of their misery, and the Sec & GR decided to leave when he threatened to demonstrate it. The day continued with visits to village churches at Chiddingly and Arlington, inspection of the Long Man of Wilmington, afternoon tea at the extensive Littlington Tea Gardens, and a bracing walk on Beachy Head before returning to London.

    985. 17.06.99 LONDON W1 WEST END: BS, Paul, Sec. Sam Smiths was sampled at the "YORKSHIRE GREY", Langham Street, prior to attendance at a performance of the "Now Show" at Broadcasting House.

    986. 08.07.99 LONDON W2 MARYLEBONE: GR, Sec, WPR. A Marylebone tour began at the "THREE TUNS" (Courage), continuing with food and drink (IPA) at the "OLD DEVONSHIRE ARMS" and concluded with Brakspears at the "GOLDEN EAGLE", Marylebone Lane. Entertainment at the latter was provided by a middle-aged South African woman with an alarmingly trussed bust, who nonchalantly parked her Mercedes on a double yellow line outside, and had a pint of Guinness brought down for her on a tray.

    987. 04.08.99 LONDON EC3 CITY: SAR & N, Sec, WPR, Adrian2 (of Barings), Steve (LTSB). The meeting assembled at the "LAMB", Leadenhall Market, (2 Pints Youngs Ordinary) and continued with the regular members sampling Bangledeshi cuisine at "Sheba", Brick Lane. Members continued in the rain for a concluding drink at the "SHOOTING STAR", Liverpool Street.

    988. 10.08.99 LONDON EC3 CITY: SAR, COB. A pre-dinner meeting in the "WINE LODGE", Fenchurch Street.

14.08.99 SURREY COLDHARBOUR: SAR & N. "PLOUGH" Leith Hill Brewery Crooked Furrow; Hogs Back Brewery TEA.

28.08.99 HAMPSHIRE BEAUWORTH: SAR & N, Beth & Jean. "MILBURYS". King Alfreds Bitter, Old Romsey, Dazed & Confused. Interesting pub in the middle of nowhere with old mill wheel within premises.

    989. 07.09.99 LONDON W1 FITZROVIA: SAR, WPR, Rick, Harald (of Germany). The party met outside at the "FITZROY", where Weissen Bier and lager were drank in honour of the German visitor. It then moved to the "DUKE OF YORK" where Exmoor Gold was sampled, and Rick impressed the party by pointing out photos of himself on the wall. The "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS" was next, where Adnams was had, and the old wheel of fortune was used to derive the following predictions: SAR: You can get what you want with patience; Rick: Dont worry, it may never happen; WPR: Youll be with it on the 17th; Harald: It is safe now to look forward. Finally, the "CAMBRIDGE", where Harald insisted, as they are both Musicians, Rick joined him in a fifth pint, rendering him somewhat incoherent. Discussions covered German etymology, Eastern Switzerland, RocknRoll Bands and mounting percussion equipment. Harald was unanimously elected an Honorary Member for his contribution to the meeting (which later resulted in his having to borrow money from a fellow German at Liverpool Street to get back to Stansted Airport).

    990. 08.09.99 EAST SUSSEX STAPLEFIELD / HANDCROSS: SAR & N, Harald (Hon. Member). The party went by train to Balcombe, walking across country among cows and rabbits to Staplefield, where a brief pause was made at the "VICTORY INN". It then proceeded through pleasant forests to Handcross and Lunch in the spacious and largely empty "RED LION" before visiting Nymans Garden and returning via Crawley by bus and train.

    991. 21.09.99 LONDON WC2 COVENT GARDEN: Sec, GR, WPR. Meeting to research the last surviving traditional pubs in Covent Garden, finding the "CROWN", Monmouth Street (Adnams), and the "TWO BREWERS", St. Martins Lane (theatrical trappings), and the "MARQUIS OF GRANBY", Chandos Place, to fit the bill with respect to dcor, although the latter proved very wine-oriented, with only one (poorly-kept) ale on offer.

    992. 30.09.99 LONDON W1 WEST END: BS, Sec. Another "Now Show" attended at ULU, with pre-entertainment Directors amidst unpleasant medical trappings at the "OLDE SURGEON", Tottenham Court Road.

    993. 15.10.99 LONDON W1 FITZROVIA: WPR, Sec, BS, Rick & Judy, PRS staff. Another performance by Rick & Phil (as "Tumbling Dice") at the "DUKE OF YORK".

    994. 28.10.99 LONDON EC3 CITY: SAR, COB. A pre-dinner meeting downstairs at the "GREEN MAN" (Wetherspoons) a cavernous largely underground venue which does not preserve anything of the atmosphere of the eponymous establishment which previously occupied this site. Members sampled Banks & Taylor Apparition Ale, Hampshire Spook and Ridleys Witchfinder, being part of the Wicked Beer Festival.

    995. 02.11.99 LONDON W1 FITZROVIA: SAR & N, Sec, WPR, Rick. Proceedings began at the "PRINCE OF WALES FEATHERS", Warren Street, last visited by the Sec on his 21st birthday. Poky and smoky. Bass. The "Prince Monolulu" (formerly "Yorkshire Grey"), Fitzroy Place, was inspected and found to be wanting, so the meeting moved on to the "KING & QUEEN" Cleveland Street, for Admans in rather cosier surroundings.

    996. 11.11.99 LONDON W1 WEST END: BS, Paul, Sec. The final "Now Show" of the decade was attended at ULU, with prior Adnams at the "MORTIMER ARMS", Tottenham Court Road.

    997. 26.11.99 LONDON W1 FITZROVIA: WPR, Sec, BS, Paul, Rick. Rick & Phils last performance of the millennium was supported with customary enthusiasm at the "DUKE OF YORK".

    998. 10.12.99 LONDON SE1 SOUTHWARK: SAR, WPR: The WPR and SAR met outside the George, but didnt go in as it was too busy. Instead, they moved southwards to the "BLUE EYED MAID" which, although it had been refurbished, was still judged to be acceptable. The SLBSs presence on the Internet was discussed, and shortly after the meeting, established by the WPR.

    999. 21.12.99 LONDON SW1 WESTMINSTER: Chair, SAR & N, WPR, Rick & Judy, Sec, GR, BS, COB. A very traditional crowd of members met at "OLD SHADES" as is usual at this time of year.
