17. 30/03/78 LONDON SW15 - PUTNEY: Convened by WPR; present SAR, Pontus, Eva, Sonia (all of Sweden), Amporn (of Thailand). The meeting was held in a musical venue, the "HALF MOON", to see Bob Kerr's Jas Friends.

23. 08/07/78 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by SAR; present Chair, EEC Watchdog (M. Bernard of Paris). The venue was a familiar one, the purpose being to familiarise our French visitor with English beer and pub ambiance, and make plans for a more ambitious fourth meeting. Minutes of the 2nd meeting were not read, so as not to bore the EEC Watchdog. "ROSE AND CROWN", High Street, "DOG AND FOX", High Street, "ALEXANDRA", Wimbledon Hill Road. The EEC Watchdog declared "I do not like ze English beer, I prefer ze champagne", and his part became merely passive. "PRINCE OF WALES", Wimbledon Hill Road. The Chair returned by train; the SAR and the EEC Watchdog trudged up Wimbledon Hill in the pouring rain.
24. 14/07/78 SURREY - EPSOM: Convened by Chair; present SAR, WPR, Rick, EEC Watchdog. The venue was chosen by the Chair as being one which was equidistant from all members, although it was nothing of the sort. Furthermore, it was felt that the EEC Watchdog should celebrate Bastille Day. The Chair insisted on an early start at 7.00, resulting in the EEC Watchdog nearly choking on his fish bones beforehand. Thus the northern party (SAR, Rick & EEC Watchdog) were late at Epsom, and after looking all over the place for the others, eventually found them back at the Station: they had already been in the "WELLINGTON" (Ind Coope), an act which was not strictly constitutional, but judged necessary in the circumstances. The party finally assembled, and walked past 5 pubs, deciding that the ambiance was not quite correct. The WPR noted the presence of a Youngs pub and went several miles down every street before admitting ignorance as to its exact location. Then it was noted that there were no other pubs besides those passed, and the order of play was as follows: The "ALBION", the "PLOUGH AND HARROW", the "SPREAD EAGLE", during which visits were made to the toilets of the White Hart across the road. The "WHITE HART", making the 8th for some. After the meeting, the EEC Watchdog declared: "I like ze English beer and have had 4 pints." An exaggeration - he had 1 1/2. The meeting was closed at the railway station and judged a flop.
25. 17/07/78 LONDON SW15 - PUTNEY: Convened by Rick; present Chair, WPR, Aardvark-Bong. Rick took the Society round his local. The SAR was absent as he was about to set off for San Francisco. The Chair reported that "we were constrained in our efforts to move on by Aardvark-Bong, who showed more interest in pool than in Bacchanalian research." The first pub was the "COACH AND EIGHT" (the rowing sort) which has now changed its name to the Fox and Hounds, gone trendy, put up silly cartoons of foxes and hounds and dispensed with the pool table so beloved of Aardvark-Bong. The original ceiling, decorated with rowing insignia, can still, however, be seen. The beer served there was, and still is, Whitbread. After that, the "HALF MOON" (Youngs) was visited, and following that yet another pub, whose name and beer have been forgotten by Rick, however it was there that the Chair went through the entire repertoire of Derek and Clive, to which Rick listened enthralled, and the WPR somewhat less so.
26. 02/09/78 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, Duncan. The meeting was convened at short notice to note that all present had been to California and that this should be discussed. Members converged on 49 Church Road and sallied forth over familiar territory; "DOG AND FOX", where barmaid gave us curious service, viz. 1/2 of Special in a pint glass and bottle of Beer. The WPR kept two bottles for home brewing. "ROSE AND CROWN", "FOX AND GRAPES", "KING OF DENMARK", which reminded the Chair of an orchestra he had played in which spent most of its time there, but it had been redecorated since. Then the Chair rushed for a train and the rest went to the "BREWERY TAP" where Stella Artois was had, but without ill effects.
27 08/09/78 LONDON SW18 - WANDSWORTH: Convened by Rick; present Chair, SAR, WPR, Andrew. This was a long-standing goal of the Society, and was prompted by the wish of Andrew to experience some Youngs Beer, thus 5 pubs round the brewery were explored. The party met at East Putney Station, after waiting for some time for its guest to emerge from the East End. Rick ably found the pubs though he had not been to any of them before. He joined the rest of the party in the Brewery Tap. Order; "BREWERY TAP", "SPREAD EAGLE", strange staircase - transcendental?, "TWO BREWERS", "CRANE", small by River Wandle estuary, WPR departed. "KING'S HEAD", lemonade had by SAR after Rick's warnings about Youngs' bilious nature. Then the Chair and Andrew went back by train and the SAR walked back in the rain at 2 a.m. after stopping at Rick's.
28. 09/09/78 SURREY - OCKHAM/RIPLEY/CLANDON: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Aardvark Bong, Catherine. This lunch time was a new departure both conceptually and geographically. The idea was Rick's and with driving instructions from Catherine and musical backing from Aardvark-Bong, the party cruised along the A3 for about 20 miles; a radical move away from South London. "THE HAUTBOY" Ockham, a converted estate chapel with a stunning selection of Real Ales; a game of pool was played. "JOLLY SAILOR", Ripley, recommended by Aardvark-Bong who was a bit uneasy, being in parental territory. "ONSLOW ARMS", Clandon.
29. 12/09/78 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by SAR, present Rick, Jane (SAR's cousin). Rick and SAR conducted a small tour of local pubs for Jane. "DOG AND FOX", "ROSE AND CROWN", "FOX AND GRAPES". The hosts had run out of money, but luckily found parental assistance there.
30. 23/09/78 LONDON NW3 - HAMPSTEAD: Convened by WPR; present SAR, Ilona (of Frankfurt). It was felt that the WPR ought to show what North London had to offer. Ilona was doing au-pair duties in the area but subsequently ran off to sail up the Amazon. The meeting first went to Kenwood for cultural reasons, and the WPR, seeing people in the park, said, "man, there's too much L.A. here", and sulked. Stalked out of art gallery in a huff, until he saw a postcard of a painting of London Bridge, a copy of which hung in the Morning Room at Worcester Park, and insisted on going round the gallery to find it. However things improved as they got to Hampstead; after seeing an Open Air Festival, they adjourned to "THE FLASK" and the "HORSE AND GROOM", and Ilona handled 2 pints of Youngs with great dexterity.
31. 27/09/78 SURREY - KINGSTON: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Aardvark-Bong. Another wheeled excursion, with Aardvark Bong constantly discussing the moribund aspects of David Bowie's latest LPs. "GEORGE AND DRAGON", Kingston Hill, "ALBERT ARMS", Kingston Hill, "FOX AND HOUNDS", Portsmouth Road.
32. 02/10/78 LONDON SW6 - FULHAM: Convened by WPR, present SAR, John (WPR's colleague). "GOLDEN LION", This was really a Whoopee Band meeting which was not Bacchanalian (how could it, in a Watneys pub). Best forgotten.
33. 15/12/78 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by SAR, present WPR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong, John. The meeting was convened at Euston Station. Arriving late on a train, the SAR was met by a disgruntled WPR, who was suffering from a lunch time office party, and said "woo-aargh, been waitin' 'ere for ages, haven't I, stupid place to meet". Therefore Rick was contacted and he said "Yeah, I'll be round all the usual places", and thus the Society adjourned to its old stamping grounds, after trying to contact the Chair, who was also hurtling south to Euston, but not in time for the meeting. The SAR and the WPR partook of a Winter Warmer at the "ALEXANDRA", and discussed the lack of Rick until 8.45. The SAR had foiled several attempts by the WPR to open his executive case, which was full of MINCE PIES. At 8.45 Rick made a classic entry to the saloon bar, announcing that he had only just avoided walking through a mirror to get there from the public bar, where he had been for 3/4 hour. There the WPR and SAR met the almost legendary Aardvark-Bong, and John Silver. The party then set off in two parties, one of which made a slightly unprofessional incursion on a Wimbledon dinner party. They met again at the "HAND IN HAND". Here the WPR and Rick went for a walk on the common to investigate the properties of an exotic plant species. The meeting then petered out.
34. 16/12/78 SURREY - SUTTON: Convened by Chair; present SAR. The SAR managed to contact the Chair, and after seeing slides of Santa Fe and its surroundings, adjourned to Sutton. First the "NEW INN" was visited and its unusual split level architecture admired, and it was noted that one could engage in interesting discussion with other peoples' feet. The "RED LION" had a rather crude clientele which tried to fit into some rather petite apparel. During the meeting, the Chair revealed that he had spent the last quarter of 1978 in Liverpool. He had favourable comments on the pubs there, which he likened unto "palaces, yes, unto palaces", and was especially enthusiastic about the vaulted ceilings in the Gents toilets (why he should have had so much cause to look at them is another question). Finally the possibility of holding a meeting outside London was broached. Crewe was suggested, due to Rail accessibility, but when the SAR phoned the Chair in his hotel, he was told definitively that "he's left, gone out, just walked right out the door, didn't say where he was going."
35. /12/78 MIDDLESEX - TEDDINGTON: Convened by WPR; present Chair. The scenario is a suburb somewhere in south-west London. Although it is north of the Thames, Teddington is an honorary member of South London, but it is a bit of a dump. It is where the WPR works most of the time, as a "computer consultant" to several hundred deceased Civil Servants. There are at least 17 pubs nearby, of which the expedition sampled five: The "CLARENCE" (Courage). The Chair arrived by train and announced that he had to eat. This pub, despite several advertisements for "Banana Fry" said they had no food yet. The place itself was large and probably too common for the Chair, so the party left. The "HOGARTH" (Charrington). At lunch time this pub is normally full of pricks from Barclays Bank, but by evening they had all gone and so had the food. The Chair was starting to look pale and was giving cause for concern. The "QUEEN DOWAGER" (Youngs). Despite being only 200 yards away, it took about 15 minutes to find this place even with a map. Sandwiches and Special Bitter were consumed. It was still early in the evening and the pub was empty except for some drunken lascivious 80-year-olds, who lowered the tone of an otherwise good pub. The party then returned to the Clarence for some more food. The "WHITE HART" (Fullers). It would have been a long walk to this pub, so the party took the train to Hampton Wick. The pub had an obsession with plastic Africana, which is all displayed in strong red light. It was decided to set a precedent by drinking Fullers at an SLBS meeting, and each had a pint of ESB (Extra Strong Brain Damage) before setting off for the pub over the road. The "OLD KING'S HEAD" (Courage). This pub was a mistake. The WPR was thinking of one about a mile away, called the King's Arms, which is a Free House and sells Ruddles County, and at the time he wondered where they had taken it. Historical Note - he has made this mistake twice more, in fact have only got the right pub once. End of Note. The Chair, who also holds an important post in Industry, revealed that he had to return to Clacton on urgent business.
