804. 23.01.94 LONDON N17 - WOOD GREEN: Anth, COB, WPR. "POACHERS", "NEW MOON". Patrick tonsorial commitments.

805. 29-01-94 LONDON SW2/WEST END: BS & E; WPR, SAR & N, COB, Paul & Fiona, (both); Sec, GR (evening). As the BS had got married to Enilda prior to this meeting, she became abbreviated to E for the purposes of the Minutes. The meeting opened in the "CROWN & SCEPTRE" (formerly J.J.MOONS) where the BS & E treated Members and other guests to Lunch. Later in the day a larger gathering took place upstairs in the "ROSE & CROWN" of quizzes fame.

806. 21.02.94 LONDON EC1 - CLERKENWELL: Sec, COB, BS, GR, Oracle. Members assembled at the Secs office before proceeding to the crowded "LAMB" (Youngs), where were joined by Oracle. Proceedings continued at the "QUEENS HEAD", Theobalds Road (Bass, more of a local), where photos of the BSs wedding were inspected; "GRIFFIN", Theobalds Road; following the Oracles departure, the party moved east, to a rather grim venue reminiscent of a Scandinavian bus station cafe, for halves of Youngs/Courage Best; "CLOCK HOUSE", Leather Lane - more character here, with spectacular "Art Deco" mirrored ceiling, Abbott & IPA. Few other customers, desultorily watching Torvill & Dean on TV. Further along Leather Lane, the "King of Diamonds" was closing up, but the proprietor obligingly directed members to the "OLD MITRE"; very cosy old-style timer-lined bar in alley between Hatton Garden and Ely Place. Burton, Tetley, Friary Meux and notably cheap food; toasted sandwiches for 1. Chilly outside WC. Executive on next table very loudly telling younger colleague about his and other colleagues drink problems.

807. 01.03.94 LONDON NW1: COB, BS, Sec, GR, WPR. First Tuesday meeting in the "MAN IN THE MOON".

808. 04.03.94 LONDON W14 / SW5 - WEST KENSINGTON / EARLS COURT: COB, WPR. "SEVEN STARS" 2 pts London Pride (Fullers). 2 x 6X in ???. No Smoking area. No Reading area. Toilets upstairs - ornate with grand staircase leading thereto. "BLACKBIRD" Earls Court. 2 pts. Chiswick (Fullers). Busy, high ceilings, got seats eventually.

809. 12.03.94 EAST SUSSEX / SURREY - CUCKFIELD / SURBITON: GR, Sec. After a lengthy delay caused by a puncture at an inopportune spot on the M23 (the GR being obliged to exercise his tyre-changing skills for the first time), lunch was taken at the "ROSE & CROWN" Cuckfield (Harveys, superior Stilton & Sausage Ploughmans, curious selection of memorabilia on walls and ceiling, ranging from Mexican brass plates to Victorian xylophones. Offer noted of "unlimited curry" for 4.95 on Thursdays). members then drove sedately round Hurstpierpoint, Ditchling, Offham, Lewes, Glyndebourne (inspection of new Opera House), Hailsham (naff shopping precinct named "Quintins") and Hurstmonceux, before the search for afternoon tea led to a 50 mile digression through the Sussex Weald. Numerous "closed until Easter", "closed until 6", and "closed until further notice" establishments were passed with mounting frustration, until eventually a garden centre cafe at Crowborough was spotted at 4.31, with "closed at 4.30" board being put outside, and ingratiation with the staff resulted in its reopening for much needed tea and cake. members then returned to Surbiton via East Grinstead, for the customary Youngs and fish tank contemplation at the "VICTORIA". Unusually busy, with large Irish element.

810. 18.03.94 LONDON W14 / W12 - WEST KENSINGTON / SHEPHERDS BUSH: COB, WPR. "FRIGATE AND FIRKIN" 2 pts. Frigate. Guardian Reading Corner. "Royal Oak" - no beer, not used. "ADMIRAL NELSON" 2 pts. Courage. Very quiet for Friday night. "PARRS HEAD" 2 pts. HB. Full of yuppies, surprisingly. Barman offhand. "MOON ON THE GREEN" Shepherds Bush (Wetherspoons). Food had downstairs. Non smoking bar. OS hen and Scotch.

811. 30.03.94 LONDON W1 - ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS & E, Oracle, Sec. 2nd; male members distracted by tall young woman wearing schoolgirl attire on next table).

812. 01.04.94 ESSEX - COLCHESTER: Sec, COB, WPR. Good Friday. "GLOBE HOTEL" Quiet. Sec felt he was in Greater Manchester, or Stoke-on-Trent. 3 x Nethergate (very bitter). Discussion re beer canning techniques, despite absence of Chair. "DRAGOON" 2 pints Adnams. Good food, friendly. WPRs juke box selection not played; endless Phil Collins instead. "ODD ONE OUT" Large selection of real ales, knowledgeably described by barman. 2 x Old Buzzard (v. dark) (Cottergh) + 1 pt. (St. Austell) Bosun - lighter, i.e. all West Country ales. Topped up without asking. Xmas carols on jukebox. "HILL STREET BLUE" (urgh, wine bar) Not allowed to drink without ordering food (it being after 3). Members therefore partook of tea and coffee to avoid hailstorm. "WAGGON & HORSES" Tetley. Dull and empty town centre pub, despite / because of Disco promised for 8 p.m.

813. 01.04.94 LONDON E1: WPR. SOS, COB. The Wetherspoons pub in Liverpool Street Station was closed, so members went to "10 BELLS" ex-Jack the Ripper Walking Tour. Discussions re Sex and Religion. Poacher Bitter. A meal (Curry) was followed by the "ALMA" Youngs & Whisky. Tubes from Aldgate East.

814. 02.04.94 LONDON W1: WPR, BS, COB. "JON SNOW" (Sam Smiths). No more quizzes. "RED LION" Quizzes Tuesday 7.45. "CLACHAN", "GREEN MAN" London Pride x . "ONE TUN" Youngs. "OLD SURGEON" (?) ex-New Inn. Youngers.

815. 06-04-94 ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS & E; SAR & N, Sec, Phil, Paul & Fiona, Cecilia, Suely. The BS was Question Master. A team comprising the SAR, Sec and Phil came first.

816. 09-04-94 LONDON - WEST END: WPR; SAR & N. Members met in the "TRAFALGAR TAVERN" and continued for Chinese food at "Joy King Lau".

817. 15-04-94 LONDON - TOOTING: COB; SAR, BS & E, Sec, GR, Suely. The meeting took place in "J.J. MOONS" and the SAR stayed for the briefest of time.

818. 21-04-94 LONDON - CITY: COB (first venue); SAR & N, BS, Sec, GR, Oracle. The COB inexplicably (because he hates crowds) convened the meeting in a Wetherspoons pub at Liverpool Street Station, into which members could not gain access because beer was being sold super cheap. After some mutual harrumphing and mooting of ECMs, the party eventually settled on "CHAPMANS/THE WINE LODGE" where there was time for two rounds of Youngs Ordinary before it closed. The Convener then deserted the meeting, which crossed London Bridge to the "GEORGE".

819. 07-05-94 LONDON WC2 - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Chair, Sec, SAR & N, WPR, BS & E, SOS, Lucy, Christina, Dalva. The meeting reverted to its original venue, the "MARQUESS OF ANGLESEY" although nobody present admitted responsibility for having made that decision. The Chair called the meeting to order, and, in a short speech, expressed the wish that the Society should continue doing what it has always done, which it did.

13-05-94 EAST SUSSEX - BERWICK: SAR & N, Dalva. A stop at the "CRICKETERS" in Berwick prior to investigating Alfriston Clergy House.

820. 25.05.94 LONDON W1 - ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS, Sec, Tim, Phil (2nd).

821. 03-06-94 LONDON - ISLINGTON: SAR & N, BS & E. Following a drink at the "ALBION", Indian food was taken at the "Gate of India"

822. 08-06-94 ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS & E; SAR & N, Sec, Oracle, Paul & Fiona, Simon, Lucy, Christina. The pub manager was Question Master. Paul & Fiona's team won convincingly, helped apparently by their knowledge of Nursery Rhymes, about which there were numerous questions posed.

823. 28-06-94 LONDON - WEST END: SAR & N; WPR, COB, Robin. The meeting assembled at the "TRAFALGAR TAVERN" where members partially watched World Cup matches. The meeting then moved to the "TATTERSHALL CASTLE", a pub which is in fact a boat, not a castle.

824. 30-06-94 LONDON - STREATHAM: SAR & N; BS & E. It was deemed necessary to hold a preliminary meeting at the "HALF AND HALF" which had opened the previous day. The pub was found to be in the Regent Inns group and a number of beers were had.

825. 03-07-94 LONDON SW2 - STREATHAM: BS & E; SAR & N, E's relations. This mostly Brazilian group met at the "CROWN & SCEPTRE" where E's brother enthusiastically partook of British beer, and E's sister and sister in law indulged in a lot of chattering.

826. 05-07-94 LONDON - STREATHAM: SAR & N; BS & E, Sec, COB, Suely, Lucy, Christina. A larger meeting was convened in the "HALF AND HALF" where a large table was purloined. the food was sampled and judged to be good, though somewhat expensive with small portions.

827. 08-07-94 LONDON - ARCHWAY: COB; SAR & N, BS & E, Sec, GR, Suely, Joe & Rosemary, Richard & Marisete. The party assembled in the "DOG" and then proceeded to have a Brazilian meal in the "Sabor do Brasil" restaurant.

828. 09-07-94 W. SUSSEX - CHICHESTER: WPR; SAR & N. Members met on the train at Clapham Junction and travelled to Chichester for a day's research. This began at the "CATHEDRAL TAVERN" where Lunch was had in a sort of car park surrounded by people redecorating the outside of the pub. The cathedral itself was then visited, together with an exhibition of bizarre modern sculptures, and a show of Scottish Country Dancing, in the precincts. Then the party sat outside on the main street at the "OLD CROSS". Prior to returning, members hit upon a beer barrel race in the Canal Basin, and had a pint of lager at the "RICHMOND TAVERN" while watching this spectacle.

829. 22.07.94 LONDON N1 - BSs BARNSBURY FAREWELL: BS & E, COB, Anth, Sec, Rick & Judy, Suely, Paul. "169 UPPER STREET" (Theakstons at busy Wetherspoons), then inspection of BSs late residence before move to "HEMINGFORD ARMS" for Boddingtons/Directors amidst "Halloween" decor.

830. 23.07.94 ESSEX / KENT - THAXTED / GRAVESEND: GR, Sec. The GR collected the Sec at home, and crossed to Essex for inspection of Thaxted, including no-nonsense Ploughmans and Adnams at the "CHEQUERS" there. The tour continued around the villages of Great Bardfield, Finchingfield, Little Dunmow and Abbess Roding, where afternoon tea was taken in the garden of a decidedly strange and pretentious tea room. members then returned to Gravesend via the Thames Bridge, and the Sec introduced the GR to the SHIP AND LOBSTER" on the Estuary.

831. 04-08-94 BRITISH BEER FESTIVAL: COB; SAR & N, BS & E, Suely. Once again the COB (who dislikes large crowds) convened a meeting in a venue where it was very difficult to obtain Beer without a long wait. After trying half a pint of a revolting beer from Cumberland, members (except the COB) partook of a reasonable Mexican take-away, then the BS bought some Guinness for the ladies, who said that this was not what they thought they were going to get. A general sense of why did we come here settled over the party, however things were brightened by the relative accessibility of the Shepherd Neame stand, and some of their products were sampled. The party then left, and repaired to the "RADNOR ARMS" for a quiet two rounds of Everard's Tiger. The South London contingent returned on the last of the Olympia to Clapham Junction special trains which was full of singing Bacchanalians.

832. 07-08-94 LONDON - TULSE HILL: BS; SAR. The BS having recently moved house, it was decided that research should be conducted into the Bacchanalian possibilities of his new neighbourhood. Members strode purposefully towards Tulse Hill and visited the "TULSE HILL TAVERN" which has a pleasant garden with a leaking pond. Wadworth's 6X was had by way of Beer. Then, narrowly avoiding a bombardment of eggs from an upstairs window, the party checked out the "RAILWAY" which had a surprisingly large, though somewhat dark, garden at the back. Theakston's Bitter was partaken of.

833. 10-08-94 LONDON W1 - ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS, Sec, Oracle, Paul. Spectacular torrential rain during evening.

834. 17-08-94 LONDON - OLYMPIA: SAR; WPR, COB, Sec, Tim, Robin. The SAR exercised the COB's usual prerogative of convening a meeting in Olympia on the grounds that he and Tim were doing a course in the Olympia Hilton. After consulting with the WPR, it was decided to convene the meeting in "HARVEY FLOORBANGER'S; however the COB refused to go there because of the name. He was later located by the rest of the party in the "ALBION", a new Youngs pub further down Hammersmith Road. Information Technology dominated the discussion, culminating in the COB outlining his vision whereby telecommunications costs would be equal regardless of distance.

835. 20-08-94 KENT - GRAVESEND: Sec; SAR & N, BS & E. The party assembled at London Bridge station and the Convener met them at Gravesend Station. He took them straight in to the "RAILWAY TAVERN", where Burton Ale was had. Members were entranced by a multiplicity of large video screens showing different things in different places. The Sec. regaled the party with tales of lecherous and sordid events which took place in the pub prior to renovation. He then moved on uphill, taking in a view over the town, and stopped for lunch in the "WINDMILL TAVERN" where members enjoyed the huge but mostly empty garden and drank Wadworth's 6X. There followed an extensive walk through an area of industrial decay to the almost legendary "SHIP & LOBSTER" as visited in 1982 during the Falklands conflict. Again it was possible to sit outside and admire the estuarine view. It was noted that a newer map of the Falkland Islands had been acquired, showing maritime casualties in the 1982 conflict. The party moved back towards town, passing a fair on the river front, and having a concluding drink of Old Speckled Hen and Pils in the "BUFFALO HEAD" down at the seedier end of the High Street. The BS took E into Tesco for emergency supplies of cake, and the party returned.

836. 29-08-94 BUCKS - WEST WYCOMBE: SAR & N; WPR. The party assembled at Marylebone Station and proceeded by train and taxi to the research area. After examining an art exhibition, members partook of 1 pint of Morlands and an unpleasant pineapple juice in the empty saloon bar of the "SWAN", which resembled somebody's front room, albeit with a surfeit of chairs. Then they had Lunch, incorporating Duck and Pigeon, accompanied by 6X, in the "GEORGE AND DRAGON". There followed cultural investigations of West Wycombe House, Park, Church, Mausoleum and Caves, followed by a return to High Wycombe Station on foot and an interchange to the Central Line at West Ruislip.

837. 15-09-94 LONDON WC1 - BLOOMSBURY: Sec, GR. "SUN" Lambs Conduit Street (Brakspears, Theakstons); "MARQUIS CORNWALLIS", Marchmont St. (Bass, Secs first visit here since his last night as an undergraduate in 1978); "NORFOLK ARMS" Leigh St. (Ruddles and food by candlelight, due to local power failure); "LORD JOHN RUSSELL" Marchmont Street (Wadworth-post-modernist rustic decor); Attempt to visit the "Water Rats" Grays Inn Road, but members asked for 3 admission for dubious looking theatrical performance visible at the far end of the bar, and retreated across the road to "LUCAS ARMS" for Boddingtons; good basic "local".

838. 01-10-94 LONDON WC1: BS & E; SAR & N, Anth, Suely. It was resolved that a new Wetherspoons pub, the "MOON AND SIXPENCE" in Wardour Street, should be investigated. It being a Saturday night in a relatively commercial area, the pub was reasonably empty so there was room for members to express themselves adequately. There was a bust of some famous (cinematographic?) figure in an adjoining alcove.

839. 15.10.94 LONDON WC2: BS & E; SAR & N, Suely, Rick (performing) and Judy. Members, with the exception of the performing one, met at the "MARQUESS OF ANGLESEY" where there was a reasonable amount of space for once, then proceeded to the "BRAHMS AND LISZT" where the BS skilfully timed arrival for one minute after it would have been free. After considerable waiting in cramped and smoky conditions, the party watched a performance of Jade and the Hat Band, featuring Rick on Lead Guitar and one vocal outburst.

840. 27.10.94 LONDON - CROUCH END: Julie/COB; SAR & N, BS & E, Sec, Suely. Members met in the Wetherspoons pub, the "ELBOW ROOM", where there was scarcely room for the said appendage, let alone the civilised conduct of a Meeting. The COB's valiant efforts to dislodge two people from an adjacent table failed until about two hours later when they left by virtue of being almost horizontal. The pub also failed to live up to Wetherspoons standards by not having food nor a no-smoking area. Because of this it became necessary to eat, at which point Julie performed a run-through of Crouch End gastronomic facilities, from which the party (minus the Sec.) chose the "Satay Malaysian" restaurant, where a variety of Oriental dishes were had. Members hurried off by bus, Victoria Line and Night Bus.

841. 02.11.94 LONDON W1 - ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS & E, Paul, Sec, Oracle, Simon, Suely. Paul won. Simon didnt win. Enilda and Suely were non-participants.

842. 12.11.94 LONDON SE1 / W1 - CITY FIREWORKS: BS & E, Suely, Paul & Fiona, Tim, Sec, GR. Preceded by Youngs at "FOUNDERS ARMS"; Sec left after display but rest of party moved on to Soho for a Chinese meal & further drinks at the Wardour Street Wetherspoons (MOON AND SIXPENCE).

843. 30.11.94 LONDON W1 - ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS, Sec, Paul & Fiona, Oracle, Tim. Fiona won, Tim was 2nd on tie break.

844. 09.12.94 LONDON EC1 - CLERKENWELL: Sec, WPR. "QUEENS HEAD" Theobalds Road (Bass); "CLOCK HOUSE", Leather Lane (IPA, very deceased looking Xmas tree); "OLD MITRE", Ely Place, (Tetley, sandwiches); "COACH & HORSES", Ray St. (Youngs, full of students, amateur musical entertainment).

845. 14.12.94 LONDON W1 - ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS & E, Sec, COB, Paul & Fiona, Tim, Phil, Simon. No Wins.

846. 22.12.94 LONDON SW1: BS & E; SAR & N, Rick & Judy, Sec, COB, GR, Fiona (colleague of GR), Suely, Oracle, Tim of PRS, Robin. This was a traditional pre-Christmas get-together at "OLD SHADES" where Nadir, arriving first, spread her shopping over the large table by the window for the Society's use. Rick and Robin discovered they had occupied the same hall of residence at Exeter at the same time.

847. 30.12.94 LONDON - WIMBLEDON: COB; SAR & N, BS & E, Sec, Suely. Members met in the DOG & FOX, Nadir having changed the original venue from the Alexandra, and conducted Enilda and Suely on a tour of Wimbledon Village. The pub gradually filled up with young persons and music included tracks by REM and Oasis which had been presented to the SAR and the Sec by the WPR, who was therefore felt to be present in spirit if not in body. Once the pub had got too full, the party moved across the road to the "BREWERY TAP" where a further two and a half rounds were had.
