214. 29/02/84 LONDON SE1 - SOUTHWARK: Convened by Chair; present WPR, Nick without Hat, Mick Wink, Pete & Jane. The leap meeting took place in the "GEORGE", and towards the end of the evening (a bad time) a meeting was arranged for the next Wednesday in the Cambridge.
215. 07/03/84 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by Chair; present WPR. The "CAMBRIDGE". The personnel structure at this meeting was temporally constituted in the following progression of states: (1) WPR, (2) Chair but not WPR, (3) WPR but not Chair, (4) Chair and WPR. The WPR, on behalf of the Society, presented a Motion of Commendation upon the Chair for staying two hours in a pub in pursuit of Bacchanalian enterprise on his own.
216. 16/03/84 LONDON W1 - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Convened by the Society; present Chair, WPR, COB, SOS, Rick, Anth, Aardvark-Bong & Jan, Pete & Jane, Maria, Mike Blanchard, Judy, Keith, Theresa & Mike, Christine, and also, in spirit, Haydn, Beethoven, Tippett, Channel, Manche, No.3, English, Four. The vane was the "CAMBRIDGE". A glass was knocked off by the WPR. Easy-going atmosphere. D(?) variable not found. Meeting abandoned by vast numbers of uncommitted members. Chair not fully recovered from 'flu. Important Issues: have you got a light, boy?; dry roasted peanuts and cigars were consumed by members in general and the Chair respectively. South American principalities and powers were discussed, with particular reference to Brazilian beer halls, followed by recollections of the scenarios of the U.L.
217. 07/05/84 SURREY - FARNCOMBE: Convened by Chair; present WPR, Maria. Members planned to meet on the 10.11 train via Wimbledon and Woking, but due to the WPR only getting on at Surbiton, only met at Woking Platform 6. Thence together to Farncombe and via Taggesell (Cattershall) Road, where the Chair complained interminably about the distance between Godalming and Farncombe, to the "RAM 'CIDER' HOUSE". The party sat in the garden where dogs roamed free (children with vandalistic tendencies also; e.g. Mother to child trying to destroy plants along streamside: come 'ere, Cleverclogs!) Various ciders consumed: Special Reserve, Special Draught and medium and dry draught Bulmers. Cheese rolls only by way of food. "Oh no, the old quick one" - Chair, simultaneously humming and whistling. Last three rolls had. The "LEATHER BOTTLE" was a Watney's house that (only just) serves hot food. The party entered timorously after being assured by the prop. that he didn't bite. Proceeded to the "Up 'em" bar, where it was necessary to ring a bell to cause the barman to mount a rickety staircase to the bar. His head was about navel level in the "Up 'em" bar. He remained cheerful throughout the session of reordered cider and hot steak and kidney pies. After a long walk the "THREE LIONS" (in CAMRA '84) was located. "I suppose you want me to serve you beer!" quipped the barman, who was wrong as the party wanted cider and pineapple (in separate glasses). Snooker was the normal pastime at this pub; no budding Davis's or White's but very quick clearances of the table by potting balls out of sequence. London Transport Stations and Galaxies were discussed. Thence by train back to Guildford, where a tour of the city was made, taking in: the Cathedral, judged by all to be boring and very unimpressive. "I have never seen anything like it" said the Polish rep. This was taken as a condemnation. The WPR defied a "do NOT touch" notice and turned the bass volume up to full on the organ. Then the University, where a futile search for the Bar was made via Surrey Court, Court 3 and the Car park. Reminiscent of Keele - windswept, devoid of students, and monolithic architecture everywhere. Over the railway, along a close (which wasn't), admiring the local horticultural delights in the gardens and then a quick tour of the shopping area prior to ice cream and coffee in Pizza-('n' a whole lot more)-land.
218. 26/05/84 SURREY/MIDDLESEX - KINGSTON/HILLINGDON/UXBRIDGE: Convened by Chair; present WPR, COB, Anth (last two at Hillingdon only). The morning expedition to Kingston was convened principally to visit the "Bit of a Lark" restaurant in Surbiton Road, Kingston. A long walk in the rain was undertaken to reach the "WYCH ELM". The WPR arrived one hour late, blaming British Rail and Persil ticket holders. The Chair was lured by the barman into losing 20p. on the fruit machine. The "KINGSTON MILL", the site of a previous meeting, was then visited and two pints Salisbury had. Grapes on the ceiling and Romanesque excavations were noted. An abortive trip to the restaurant was followed by an abortive search for an Indian restaurant, but note re: food, the party settled for a Deep Pan pizza. Next, an epic journey via nos. 111 and 98 buses was taken to Hillingdon. Members were reminded of the worst aspects of Stoke area meetings. The party arrived at 4.45 p.m. in the pouring rain, to find all the pubs shut, and everything bleak, so had coffee and compiled an appendix of Dismal Places. Next, the COB and Anth were met, and the larger party noted prints on the wall in the "MASTER BREWER", then went on to a pub that was shut and miles away, namely, the "OAK TREE"; but eventually members were let in. This was followed by a walk, bus ride and walk to the "PRINCE OF WALES" - another unmemorable hole. The COB and Anth went off in pursuit of more of the same (connected with the Fullers Passport), while the Chair and WPR eventually continued to the "RED LION" - a nice pub, obviously to be avoided. The Chair's comments: "v. woody". King Charles I stayed here on the way from Oxford to Southwell (Notts?) - a likely story! He was in disguise at the time so was not recognised anyway. The general conclusion was that members should have gone straight to this pub and stayed the evening instead of aimlessly wandering about to complete the "Fullers Passport". Finally members went on the "GREEN MAN" in Uxbridge, and then the Chair's 10th pint of the day was had with a curry at the Discovery of India restaurant, which was discovered off Baker Street.
219. 29/06/84 SURREY - RICHMOND: WPR, Chair, Rick & Judy, Maria. "THE WHITE CROSS"; WPR and Chair arrived 7 p.m., Rick & Judy arrived 9.10 p.m.. Pleasant riverside environment enjoyed by all, seated outside except that it was bleeding cold, so the party accordingly wandered around Richmond for some considerable length of time, before descending on the "ORANGE TREE", where it was even colder, and windy to boot, after having experienced Morris men, beer and cottage pie and having discussed Berlin, the aftermath of Rick's recent party and members' recent infections. The WPR unfortunately met work colleagues, who pointed out he'd taken the day off ill.
220. 20/12/84 LONDON W1/WC2 - BLOOMSBURY/COVENT GARDEN: Convened by WPR; present Chair, SAR & N, Rick & Judy, Aardvark-Bong & Jan. This was the first U.K. meeting for Nadir, and the first venue was the traditional "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS" where the SAR & N met the WPR. The party then proceeded to the "PUNCH & JUDY" which was extremely full, so members had to sit at a table outside, wrapped up in their overcoats. Aardvark-Bong was vociferous to all and sundry, and was upbraided by Jan. The meeting then continued in an excellent Chinese restaurant near Leicester Square.
221. 22/12/84 LONDON E1 - WAPPING: Convened by SOS; present Chair, SAR & N, WPR. The "PROSPECT OF WHITBY" was the venue. On returning from the pub to the Underground Station, some Russian graffiti was spotted by members. Its meaning was discussed learnedly and at length by the SOS, while the WPR offered the following immediate (and probably erroneous) translation: "Doc- Doc-Doc-Doc-Doctor Beat, won't you help me Doctor Beat?"
222. 23/12/84 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Chair; present SAR & N, WPR, Marta. The Chair, in a temporary attempt to gentrify the Society, convened this meeting in the WINE BAR side of the "DOG & FOX". Members then progressed to the "Pizza Express" and ended up in the actual pub side of the Dog & Fox.
223. 24/12/84 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by WPR; present Chair, Rick. Christmas Eve was celebrated in the "HAND IN HAND".
224. 27/12/84 LONDON SW1 - WESTMINSTER: Convened by SAR & N; present Chair, Sec, SOS. The party met in the "ADMIRAL NELSON" and then proceeded to have an indifferent to poor Indian meal in the Aldwych Tandoori.
225. 27/12/84 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by SAR & N; present Chair, WPR, Rick, Sec, SOS. In view of the lunch time meeting, members met in the "EMMA HAMILTON" for reasons of historical accuracy. The party paced through freezing fog to get there.
