120. 08/01/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Rick; present SAR, WPR, Hugh, Marta (of Brazil). The "ALEXANDRA", "HAND IN HAND". The meeting diverged in the middle due to certain parties requiring a MacDonalds and others feeling the effects of having had too many.

121. 09/01/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, Anabel and Carmen (of Leon and Cordoba, Spain). The "ALEXANDRA" was again the venue. The Chair finally emerged from a sojourn in Lincolnshire. Discussion centered on the different concepts of anarchy in Spain and in the U.K., and the Spanish visitors revealed that they had recently attended a meeting in Wapping in this regard. The WPR counted to 10 and kept out of the debate. Then the Andalusian railway network was talked of, and Carmen revealed that her uncle was stationmaster at Bobadilla, where all founder members have at one time changed trains. A philosophical discussion on the merits of computers was unfortunately entered into. It didn't last long. The Spanish proverb "La vida no es para contabilizarla en cada momento" was aired by one of the guests, presumably as a reference to SLBS policy. It reply, the SAR decreed that you can't drink chairs, and the Chair agreed, with the rider "You can't drink velvet". The Chair produced a hip flask of brandy at the 93 Bus Stop, which was noisily had.

122. 15/01/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Chair; present SAR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong, Pete, First Lady B, Pete's Lady A. The "ALEXANDRA".

123. 16/01/82 LONDON W1 - SOHO: Convened by SAR; present SOS. This meeting was unconstitutional according to the customs of the day, but interesting. The SAR and the SOS, who braved rail strikes, met at an obscure Knightsbridge travel agents and walked round London for hours with stops firstly in the "INTREPID FOX" Wardour Street, where Burton Bitter was had. The picture on the pub sign is not a fox but a man who the SOS said was an Historical Figure. The second stop was the "HOG IN THE POUND" (presumably not an Historical Figure), where Stag and Pils were had, and the meeting accidentally became more protracted as two Spanish girls were located at the next table, notably Maria of Malaga and Isabel of Barcelona, who interpreted the SAR's handwriting.

124. 22/01/82 LONDON SW18 - EARLSFIELD: Convened by Aardvark-Bong; present Chair, SAR, Rick. This meeting started in the "PARK TAVERN" (Courage) Merton Road. Several pints were had here by way of Best. The party proceeded northbound to the "GROSVENOR ARMS", known locally as the Morgue because customers are actively discouraged by the management. To test this policy, Aardvark- Bong equipped members with apparatus involving balloons, masks, party whistles and false noses, and these were put into the effect. When the Chair went to order the second round of drinks, it was suggested (in no uncertain terms), that the Society's custom be taken elsewhere, for the first time in its history. Balloons were therefore detonated on exit, and the party came upon an altogether more sociable atmosphere in the "GARDENERS ARMS" across the road. One of the Morgue's two customers came across the road too, saying that this had been the most interesting spectacle he had seen in all his 192 years in Earlsfield, and proceeded to argue with Aardvark-Bong about the SDP. Meanwhile Rick got into discussion with a retired 85 bus driver who went into the detailed history of the route, while the Chair had the misfortune to meet an ex-Metal Box man who went into great detail about all the factories he had seen. Lack of Trains after this, so the Chair and SAR proceeded on foot to Wimbledon.

23/01/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Nobody; present two members. It was later discovered that two founder members had been present simultaneously at the "ALEXANDRA", but in different sections of the pub. This, in constitutional terms, could only be defined as a meeting in "a posteriori" terms.

125. 03/02/82 LONDON SE1 - SOUTHWARK: Convened by Pete; present Chair, SAR, WPR, Rick, First Lady B. The venue was the "GOOSE AND FIRKIN" where Bruce's bitter was generally had, except by the Chair, who downed several pints of Dogbolter. This was truly a noisy pub with community singing being rife. Pete, as Convener of the meeting, ably exercised his duties by roughly commandeering a table for the party by expelling a man who was half way through his dinner.

126. 08/02/82 LONDON SW6 - FULHAM: Convened by WPR; present SAR, Pete, Aurora (of Granada, Spain). This meeting was designed to see the Whoopee Band, and the SAR went into the "GOLDEN LION" with Aurora, not noticing that they weren't on. So the WPR and Pete waited outside while the SAR finished listening to all the records he had put on the jukebox. Then the party went to the "SWAN" which was also empty, and Aurora expressed concern that two pints were being had by certain members. The WPR and Pete split and the SAR and Aurora returned to the Golden Lion and they were entertained by a second rate rock band for a short time.

127. 20/02/82 LONDON WC2/EC4/W1 - COVENT GARDEN/CITY/SOHO: Convened by WPR; present SAR, Rick. The meeting was convened in the "MARQUIS OF ANGLESEY" where, as usual, the party got in the way of everybody. So it went eastwards to Fleet Street, which most members did not think to be a good idea. The SAR was admonished for this, but pints were had upstairs in the "TIPPERARY" and a card was sent to the ill Chair. Mutiny then set in and a WPR-Rick faction proposed a taxi to Leicester Square, and an extensive Chinese meal was had at the Diamond Restaurant in Lisle Street. The party disgusted the other diners by rather obvious consumption of orange segments. There was just time for a drink in the "POLAR BEAR", where the management were in the process of throwing everybody out.

128. 25/02/82 LONDON W1 - SOHO: Convened by WPR; present Rick. The WPR and Rick held a lunch time business meeting around Soho. The location was not recorded.

129. 26/02/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Aardvark-Bong, Helen. A traditional get-together in the "HAND IN HAND", where Helen tried to increase the Society's membership by enrolling a large number of fictitious characters from her new book. This was ruled against, but she was enrolled herself and could (and did) represent some of these characters if she so wished.

130. 27/02/82 LONDON SW15 - PUTNEY: Convened by Rick; present Chair, SAR, First Lady B, Helen, Malcolm and Jane (SAR's cousins), Pete M. and associates. The forward party assembled in the "STAR AND GARTER" where the First Lady B took responsibility for an enormous pile of coats which periodically threatened her with their mere volume and lack of balance. A second party, consisting of Rick and Helen, turned up, at which point the venue moved to the "SPOTTED HORSE", where there was a third party, and a general schism, wherein the "That Red Stuff" band and its fans formed a musical discussion group, and the others piled into the First Lady B's mini for the return journey.

131. 06/03/82 LONDON E1/BUCKINGHAMSHIRE - WAPPING/CHESHAM: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, Rick (Wapping only), Sec. These two places are only linked by being on the Secretary, First Lady B, Chair, WPR, RickMetropolitan Line, on which the participants in this meeting took about 45 journeys all told. Members assembled in the "PROSPECT OF WHITBY" where the Sec received the initial title of Gravesend Representative. The Chair left a visiting card relating to a Leicester hotel. The party then continued to the "TOWN OF RAMSGATE" where some members had a second lunch. A game of darts was had, but the SAR had to spend most of the time at the other end of the pub to hear the records he had put on the jukebox. Rick then departed to watch Rugger and the rest went by train to Amersham after a necessary halt at Baker Street, but it was raining at Amersham so the party continued to Chesham. The Sec was finding it all to much and had a 3 hour attack of hiccups followed by more violent reactions, and was off form. At Chesham, the "WAGGON AND HORSES" was entered at opening time, followed by the "KING'S ARMS" and the "QUEEN'S HEAD", which members had to follow the Chair in the rain for ages to find.

132. 13/03/82 EAST SUSSEX - BRIGHTON: Convened by Andrew: present Chair, SAR, WPR, Sec, First Lady B, Aurora, Maria (of Argentina). The party arrived in separate parts of the same train, and were met by Andrew, now resident in a Brighton basement with lots of squatters. The "pubbers" in the party went all out for the "PRINCE GEORGE" leaving the stragglers wandering in the street. They posted a watch on major junctions and eventually the party reassembled, when suitable abuse was exchanged. The party had lunch in the "KING AND QUEEN", a pseudo-imitation Elizabethan barn. Then the "pubbers" went to the "PAVILION TAVERN" and the cultural element made an investigation of the Pavilion itself. A small Argentinean faction did neither. There followed an investigation of the Pier, where the Chair spent ages on Space Invaders, and dodgems were driven by the more adventurous members. At re-opening time the Chair ably found "NOBLE'S BAR", the smallest pub in Brighton, where Aurora had problems with an excessively friendly cat. Finally the Pavilion Tavern again, for more food and drink. The "pubbers", minus Andrew, stayed longer here afterwards.

133. 17/03/82 SAR'S BIRTHDAY: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, Rick, guests from all over the world. This was not really a meeting per se, because no public house was involved, but members turned out in force to celebrate the SAR's birthday at his private residence. Representatives from all over the world were present.

134. 25/03/82 LONDON W6 - HAMMERSMITH: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Aardvark-Bong, Pete L. An avant-garde contingent went to celebrate (?) Rick's birthday at the ("HAMMERSMITH PALAIS") with the Birthday Party and the Fall. Whisky was had for reasons of convenience. Credit is expressed to Pete for transport to and from the meeting.

135. 27/03/82 ESSEX - SOUTHEND: Convened by SOS; present SAR, Sec. Unconstitutional according to the order of the day, however, some useful research was carried out at the "DICKENS INN" and the "GUILDFORD" and discussion took place about SLBS strategy in the Thames Estuary. The SOS produced an exotic Mexican/Rumanian lunch out of tins.

136. 02/04/82 LONDON W1 - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Convened by WPR; present Chair, SAR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong, Nick without Hat, Zane, Another. The party mostly assembled, often late, in the "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS", where the situation in the Falkland Islands was discussed at length, and the SLBS formulated policy objectives. Then the party went on to the "FITZROY TAVERN" and there was a schism. The WPR joined a large group of jazz-rock musicians who felt that their own careers were too important to take up an offer to join Spandau Ballet. To counter this tendency, Rick announced that his boss used to go out with the lead singer of Linx. Nick without Hat made mincemeat of all such claims by noisily imitating the entire Top 30 at the other side of the pub. Aardvark-Bong began a lengthy political discussion with Zane, who represented the opposite end of the spectrum. A MacDonalds was had at the end. Efforts were made to stop Aardvark-Bong from overindulging.

137. 07/04/82 LONDON EC4/SE1 - CITY/SOUTHWARK: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, IQ, Nick without Hat, others (only SAR/WPR at first 2). The meeting was opened by the SAR and WPR in the "SAMUEL PEPYS", followed by the "SQUARE RIGGER", a mock-nautical cellar near London Bridge, where food was had. The river was crossed to the "GEORGE" where the Chair's party was in full swing. Nick without Hat, this time more subdued, was formally invested with this title, and he delivered an urgent and staggeringly lyrical manifesto, whose exact contents were forgotten. The evening was rounded off by an answer to the Irish Question by the same.

138. 10/04/82 KENT - GRAVESEND: Convened by Sec; present SAR, WPR (not evening). A fascinating Historical and Bacchanalian investigation, as well as a useful discussion on SLBS policy on the southern flanks of the Thames Estuary. The meeting began at the "THREE DAWS", then the "PIER HOTEL" where the locally brewed "Gravedigger" was undrunk by the WPR, being too "antiseptic" for him. Then the party went to the "CALL BOY" where the Sec used to indulge in underage drinking, and indeed most of the clientele were under 18. After this, an historical appreciation of Rochester took place, minus the WPR who went. Then the Sec took the meeting, now technically unconstitutional, to the "SHIP AND LOBSTER" in the depths of Docklands, where a map of the Falkland Islands was noted, this being the watering hole of the supply boat thereto. Finally, a visit was made to the "RAILWAY BELL", the interior of which was train-like. The SAR was in a difficult position as the Sec said that the lavatories should not be used while the train was standing at a station.

139. 16/04/82 LONDON EC4/SE1/W1 - CITY/SOUTHWARK/SOHO: Convened by SAR; present SOS. The meeting, technically unconstitutional, took place in the "SAMUEL PEPYS", the "GEORGE", the "DOG AND TRUMPET" and the "HOG IN THE POUND" Bond Street. The party played several games of darts but did not casually encounter any Spanish women, as last time.

140. 30/04/82 LONDON EC4/SE1 - CITY/SOUTHWARK: Convened by SAR; present Chair, Sec, Nick without Hat, Malcolm and Jane (SAR's cousins). The meeting began in the "SAMUEL PEPYS", regular haunt of LBI Trainees. The core of the party (Chair, SAR, Sec, Nick without Hat) crossed the river across a building site to the "ANCHOR" where bars on different levels were noted. Then the "FOUNDERS ARMS" where a spectacular floodlit view of St. Paul's was noted. On departure, Nick without Hat burst into his by now celebrated rendition of "Party Fears Two", which degenerated into the "Banana Boat Song" by the time the party reached Blackfriars Bridge. The best place for such a degenerate mob was the "HOLE IN THE WALL" where Nick without Hat made considerable investments in the juke box.

141. 02/05/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Helen. The meeting convened late in the "HAND IN HAND" because of the SAR's attempts to solve the Falkland Islands dispute with an Argentinean delegation in the Rose and Crown. As no agreement was reached, the Argentinean delegation was not invited to attend the SLBS and refused anyway, despite the efforts of a Spanish mediator. The meeting in the Hand in Hand was, as such, unspectacular.

142. 03/05/82 KENT - CANTERBURY/RAMSGATE: Convened by Chair; present SAR, WPR, First Lady B. A staunch party set off from Charing Cross and arrived in Canterbury at opening time. The "CITY ARMS" (Fremlins), noted for its snob screen, was found.First Lady B, Chair, WPRA print on the wall depicted a meeting held there on V.E. day. Another Bacchanalian Society was there, but liaison was not made. The "ROYAL DRAGOON" (Shepherd Neame) where it was difficult to order 2 1/2 pints (1 and 2 halves? 2 and 2 halves? ... etc.). The regular customers seemed unable to identify the gender of the toilets, as the management changed or removed the labels. The "PRINCE OF WALES" (Fremlins) where food was inexpensive, which made the Chair and WPR decide not to eat. Instead, Sweeney Todd's was visited, where the WPR had a Nuclear Holocaust Pizza featuring chillies, curry, tabasco etc. Lager had too! Then a walk round the cathedral and train to Ramsgate where it was very cold and windy, with few people about. The traditional session in the amusement arcade followed with the Chair demonstrating his skills at Space Invaders. Modest drinking followed: the "FREEMASON'S ARMS" chosen because of the Chair's recent dabbling in that Order. An odd man took leave to recommend the lavatory facilities of Margate and Ramsgate Police Stations. The "EAST KENT ARMS" was chosen for geographical accuracy. Stone's bitter was had, except by the WPR who was posing with gin, and the First Lady B, who, as usual, remained ladylike to the last and upbraided the Chair on necessary points. The journey back was marred for her by continually having to shut the sliding door between carriages. The Chair calmed her with suitable epithets.

143. 14/05/82 LONDON SW15 - PUTNEY: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Aardvark-Bong, John. A Putney location was chosen to meet the elusive Spanish duo often known as Carmen and Miranda, but after a mysterious telephone call at 63 West Hill which confused Rick's father, this meeting was again held in suspense. At 63 West Hill, Rick was holding an audience of the tracks he was laying down on tape, with John commenting. After this, members adjourned to the "STAR AND GARTER" where a frosty reception from Aardvark-Bong was expected and received. A rather annoying group next door insisted on imitating Paul Weller etc.

144. 19/05/82 LONDON EC4/SE1/E1 - CITY/SOUTHWARK/WAPPING: Convened by SOS; present SAR. The party met in the "SAMUEL PEPYS" and then proceeded over the river to the "ANCHOR" for food. This was followed by visits to the "DICKENS INN", the "TOWN OF RAMSGATE" and the "PROSPECT OF WHITBY".

Rick, IQ, Nick without Hat, Pete, Chair, WPR145. 28/05/82 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by WPR; present Chair, SAR, Rick, Pete, Sec, IQ, Nick without Hat. The meeting was convened at the "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS" where the Society met again to discuss the Falkland Islands question. The motion was passed that the sad loss of a penguin was regretted. A splinter group hived themselves off to the "BRICKLAYERS ARMS" when it got coldish outside. The rest did not notice as Nick without Hat embarked on a lengthy imitation of Ian MacDonald in the "FITZROY TAVERN". Rick was so impressed that he offered him a vocal position in the Rock Scene, which he was gradually beginning to run via the PRS. He invited suggestions for his band's new name. The most popular were Windbreaker and the Shoes. Finally, the "WHEATSHEAF" was visited.

146. 31/05/82 BERKSHIRE - ETON/WINDSOR: Convened by SAR; present Chair, Sec, First Lady B, Aurora, Marta and Maria (of Poland), Christel and Susanna (of West Germany).Chair(1st left), Maria(3rd left), Marta(4th left), SAR(6th left)This international contingent arrived Brighton fashion in separate parts of the parts of the same train, at Windsor and Eton Riverside. Refreshment was had at the "CHRISTOPHER HOTEL", Eton, followed by the "ADAM AND EVE" in Windsor. Here, the Polish delegation felt unable to imbibe but were presented with Ice Creams. After a lengthy picnic and a cultural visit to St. George's Chapel and the Royal Mews, and a rest in the Park, further refreshment was had in the "WATERMAN'S ARMS", Eton, selected for its unusual paraphernalia. The party were treated to a selection of Polish tongue- twisters, e.g. JERZY NIE WIERZY, ZE NA WIEZY JEST GNIAZDO JEZY (Translation: George doesn't believe that there is a nest of hedgehogs on top of the tower (!)). Then the party sat by the river and had a drink at the "DONKEY HOUSE" Windsor.

147. 01/06/82 CORNWALL - PENZANCE: Convened by WPR; present SAR. A West Country Field Trip was undertaken by these two intrepid Members. "LONGBOAT" formerly Railway Inn, 2 pts. Devenish Saxon Bitter. "ST. JOHN'S HOUSE" 2 pts. St. Austell Bitter, awful renditions of the Nolans singing Gilbert and Sullivan. The "RIVIERA" "Indian Restaurant and Real Ale Bar"; highly recommended for criticism, especially by anybody vaguely aware of the meaning of Real Ale or Indian Cookery. Obviously neither concept seemed to have penetrated this peripheral outpost. Despite an impressive list of Real Ales, on request of a pint, members were informed that "whether we have beer depends on what day it is... I think we have something called Bass... just a minute I'll have to ask someone". In addition the curry resembled a down-market dog food and was about as hot as a winter's day in Hartlepool. The waitress was like an early '60s model who had not grown up. To cap it all, she expressed bewilderment when proffered a Barclaycard and had to seek advice. WPR's summary: "not all there; reminiscent of the remotest parts of South America, or possibly a Sherpa trek up K2".

148. 02/06/82 CORNWALL - PENZANCE: Convened by WPR; present SAR. The "MOUNTS BAY INN" 2 x 2 pints Devenish Cornish Bitter; this beer was certainly a highlight of this fieldwork. Display of Knots. "DOLPHIN INN" 2 pts. St. Austell Ales. Sat outside inspecting harbour activity, eating fresh fish and chips plus peas. Recommended, friendly. "DOCK INN" 1 pt. Courage Best, 1 pt. Shandy. The WPR took a dislike to the place and its clientele, and opted for standing in a cold and empty Beer Garden facing a car park. Inside, "unusual impedimenta" hung from the ceiling, e.g. a teapot herb garden and a Post-Impressionist torch.

149. 03/06/82 CORNWALL - LAND'S END: Convened by WPR; present SAR. The "LAND'S END PUB" was visited for the record. 3 pts. Shandy, 1 pt. Lands End Bitter, which was undistinctive. The pub seemed to be suspended in nothingness, it being misty all around.

150. 03/06/82 CORNWALL - PENZANCE: Convened by WPR; present SAR. The "TURK'S HEAD" 2 x 3 pints Cornish Bitter, plus Mexican Hotpots - presumably as this is the nearest point to Mexico in England this is better prepared than the Indian cuisine previously mentioned. Venue highly recommended - good juke box, motley and eclectic cliientele. The "YACHT INN" 2 pts. "Tinner" (St. Austell); a pseudo - 1930s Arnos Grove pastiche gracing the waterfront. The WPR got hiccups, so the SAR did most of the drinking, and played Space Invaders.

151. 04/06/82 CORNWALL - PERRANPORTH: Convened by WPR; present SAR. Lunch was had at the "VILLAGE INN" (known the other side as the Tywarnhale, which presumably would scare away tourists). 1 pt. Cornish, 1 pt. shandy. Senility noted in older bar staff. Repeated appearances of a cockle seller in different parts of the area.

152. 04/06/82 DEVON - BIDEFORD: Convened by WPR; present SAR. A dreadful place. "APPLEDORE INN" (Heavitree Ales), no, I'm afraid you're 12 years late. It is thought that Flowers' Bitter was had. The "GANNET" (prints on the wall of same), a virtually empty Berni Inn type emporium, seemed the only place to eat; 2 pts. Triple Crown (a.k.a. Truman), which was lousy. It was decided that this was not the place for the SLBS, the population being divided between old semi-alive persons in cloth caps and rather sad young people attempting to be cool. The "TALBOT" (Free House (!)); things got worse. 2 pts. Barleycorn Pale (Whitbread), appalling juke box. The "HEAVITREE ARMS" 1/2 pt. Flowers Bitter. Epsomian flop.

153. 05/06/82 AVON - BATH: Convened by WPR; present SAR. After a long day on the road a welcome selection of Ale was had. "ROYAL OAK" 1 pt. Gibbs Wiltshire Special, 1 pt. PGB Premium Bitter (far too warm in the circumstances). The "HUNTSMANS" or the Eldridge Pope & Co. Ltd.; both these seem to be the name of the beer, but the pub seemed to have no other name. Huntsman's Royal Oak (2 pts.), Dorset Bitter (1 pt.) and 1 pt. shandy. Outside was sat - excellent end-of-term type atmosphere. A group of folk musicians competed with a jazz band across the square. Overhead, balloons were noted. The "CRYSTAL PALACE"; prints on the wall of same.

154. 05/06/82 LONDON WC1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by Chair; present Rick, Aardvark-Bong, IQ, Nick without Hat. The same evening, the non-Bath members held an alternative meeting at the "SUN" Lamb's Conduit Street. The Chair reported that everybody got fairly merry and had a good time. The party tried to go to the Moon but only got to the Indian restaurant opposite.

155. 06/06/82 WILTSHIRE/BERKSHIRE - AVEBURY/HUNGERFORD: Convened by WPR; present SAR. In Avebury, prehistoric ruins were inspected and the "RED LION" visited. 1 pt. Strongs, 1 pt. Shandy. At Hungerford; "THREE SWANS HOTEL" 1 1/2 pts. Arkells and Lunch.

156. 11/06/82 LONDON E18 - SOUTH WOODFORD: Convened by IQ; present Chair, SAR. WPR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong, Nick without Hat, First Lady B, Christine, Zane, Lesley. The IQ ably provided SALAD to members arriving early at his residence. The bell did not work so the WPR was left pacing up and down the street until somebody inside mentioned that the WPR might be pacing up and down the street, and shouldn't something be done about it. Then the party adjourned to the "FIR TREES", where the ambiance was good, so the party remained there until closing time. Latterly, Rick reported that "members of the Society ... inebriate: the Chair behaving in an unusual manner ... lying on back blabbering with feet in the air and later appearing with fixed grin in peoples' rooms at various hours ... this particularly embarrassing to Aardvark-Bong. In addition Nick without Hat suddenly crashed out in the front garden."

157. 19/06/82 LONDON SW19 - WPR'S BIRTHDAY: Convened by WPR, present SAR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong. The meeting began in the "ALEXANDRA" where the SAR was lamenting the non-presence of certain Brazilian or Spanish women. So the party moved to the "DOG AND FOX", where in fact the Granada representative was reputed to have been, but somehow missed. However, Rick and Aardvark-Bong derived a great deal of academic interest from the backless apparel of one of the clientele, despite the fact that the woman inside was in her late 30s and the garment very ill-fitting. The WPR likened their interest to that of ageing public schoolmasters. Finally, the "HAND IN HAND" was visited.

158. 21/06/82 LONDON EC4/SE1 - CITY/SOUTHWARK: Convened by SAR, present SOS, Carmen. The meeting was convened to celebrate Carmen's birthday, and the itinerary was the "GREEN MAN" (off Queen Victoria Street), "GEORGE", "FOUNDERS ARMS", "DOGGETTS COAT & BADGE".

159. 25/06/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Chair; present SAR, Pete & Jane, First Lady B, Marta and Maria (of Poland), two sundry persons from Elephant and Castle. The sundry persons showed up later. The Chair carried on impressing the Polish contingent by getting his tongue round various words. An ex-Johnian was accidentally met.

160. 26/06/82 HAMPSHIRE/WEST SUSSEX - PRIOR'S DEAN/STEEP/ROGATE/TROTTON/ARUNDEL: Convened by Chair; present SAR, First Lady B, Aurora. Voyage in Car. Chair conducted party to very remote " WHITE HORSE", Priors Dean, behind a campsite, no markings. Many Ales; White Horse No-Name and Ringwood Bitter had, mostly by Chair, who had special throne provided. The First Lady B wanted to take some of the furniture home, and a man inside commented that the duck they served tasted more like half a Patagonian vulture. Then to the "HARROW" Steep, Pompey Royal. A tent was provided in the garden for rain, and kittens and cockerels were for sale. Next to the "WYNDHAM ARMS" Rogate; the Good Beer Guide says "The Village Pub; SLBS says "A Village Pub". Milk churns as bar stools. Friary Meux had. Then Venison Sausages, French Onion Soup and Hall and Woodhouse Badger beer, and lager, had, at the "KEEPERS ARMS" Trotton. The Open Air Museum in Singleton, where the Chair was intent on fiddling around with fences and other impediments. A brief stop in Arundel, and the "RED LION", where it should be noted that this research was proposed by the First Lady B, not the Chair, though in the last reckoning she had coffee.

161. 02/07/82 LONDON SW19 - SAR'S PARTY: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong, Malcolm and Jane (SAR's cousins), First Lady B, Second Lady B, Andre (of Brazil), Aurora, Clara (Spain), Frederique (Rouen), Nadia (Paris), Monika (West Germany), Maria and Marta (Poland). This event, though not strictly an SLBS function, was an important function which was very successful, and livened up considerably by the unscheduled arrival of Aardvark-Bong.

162. 03/07/82 LONDON EC4/SE1 - CITY/SOUTHWARK: Convened by Chair; present SAR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong, John, Nick without Hat, IQ, First Lady B, Helen, Christine. The meeting started downstairs in the "SAMUEL PEPYS" where the SAR was, luckily, not recognised by the management, after a previous affray therein. The party then retired upstairs where a storm was witnessed from the balcony overlooking the river, and a man digging a hole in the riverbank proved a subject of interest, his efforts being rendered futile by the relentlessly oncoming tide. Then members crossed the river to the "FOUNDERS ARMS" and sat outside, splitting into a musical faction and the others. Singing by the former of the by now classic "Party Fears II" was not encouraged by the management, and was loudly transferred to Blackfriars Bridge where Nick without Hat burst into his rendition of "Happy Talk" and rounded off his routine by a suitably manic Hitler imitation in an eastbound Circle Line train, to the consternation of eastbound AND westbound passengers.

163. 09/07/82 LONDON W1/WC2 - BLOOMSBURY/WESTMINSTER: Convened by WPR; present SAR, Rick, Helen. The meeting was convened in the "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS" by arrival of the SAR, who found the rest of the party partially inside and partially outside, having missed each other despite the extreme smallness of the pub and the lack of other customers. Rick had to leave to not receive a phone call from an important voice in the progressive music scene, and Helen had to go and have her 7 o'clock salad. The SAR and WPR went to the "GRIFFIN" and phoned Rick who returned from Putney, by which time the party had got a bit bored, listening to two alternate musics emanating from different areas of the pub. A prat came along and challenged members to darts but left as the game between Rick and the SAR barely got moving. He returned later, when the game was still going on, but, pretending he had dealt Rick a stunning defeat, proceeded to deal the SAR a humble defeat. Pretty lousy meeting.

164. 12/07/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by SAR; present Rick, Aurora, Monika, Chantal (Geneva). This meeting was convened in the "ROSE AND CROWN" to say good-bye to Monika, and as such was not the most auspicious of occasions.

165. 16/07/82 LONDON NW1 - CAMDEN TOWN: Convened by SAR; present WPR. The SAR and WPR failed to see the film "Fitzcarraldo" and instead visited two seedy pubs: the "HAWLEY ARMS", full of Irish ex-hippies, and the "BRIGHTON", full of octogenarians ignoring a country band called Nick and the Highways.

166. 21/07/82 LONDON NW1 - CAMDEN TOWN: Convened by SAR; present WPR. This time the SAR and WPR did manage to see "Fitzcarraldo" after spending ages buying singles at 10p each in a record shop. Research was very hurried in between these events, in fact conducted in circa 10 minutes in the "BUCK'S HEAD".

167. 23/07/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Rick; present SAR, John, Helen. "ALEXANDRA" followed by the "HAND IN HAND" where John appeared in the usual manner along with a person unrecognised by the SAR, who turned out to be Hark Madly.

168. 06/08/82 LONDON WC2 - WESTMINSTER: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, Rick, Sec, SOS, First Lady B, Second Lady B, Aurora, Maria (Poland). The meeting convened in the "ADMIRAL NELSON" and moved to the "SHERLOCK HOLMES" after a lengthy session, during which the SAR left with the Spanish/Polish delegation and returned with a Brazilian one. Uncanny disappearance of the Sec from the Sherlock Holmes. At one point the SAR thought the pub itself had disappeared, but this an illusion; he facing wrong way.

169. 07/08/82 WILTSHIRE - SALISBURY: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, First Lady B, Maria (Poland), Margaret (SAR's cousin). The party assembled to take advantage of a special British Rail offer, for which five was the optimum number, hence big chorus wooargh - WPR appears at 11th hour. Lunch was had in the "HAUNCH OF VENISON" and judged excellent. The "RED LION" was then visited, and then cultural visits ensued, and postcards were sent to Poland in number. The WPR was in an anti-stately homes mood and buried himself in a copy of the Guardian. At reopening time dinner was had in the "CITY ARMS" followed by a visit to the "BARON OF BEEF".

170. 08/08/82 LONDON SW11 - CLAPHAM: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Aardvark-Bong, John, Second Lady B, Margaret (SAR's cousin), Maria (Poland). The ("101 CLUB") was the venue, and this was really a non-meeting, as members failed to see the intended performance of Rick's band Workshop.

171. 20/08/82 LONDON SW11 - CLAPHAM: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Second Lady B. This time the party did see Rick's band, at the ("101 CLUB"), and it presented a very together performance; urgent, lyrical, of staggering range and eclecticism.

172. 21/08/82 KENT - TUNBRIDGE WELLS: Convened by SOS; present SAR, WPR, Second Lady B, Maria (Poland). The meeting began with lunch in the "HOLE IN THE WALL" , a fascinating ancient vari-level place, and then adjourned to the "DUKE OF YORK", where drinks were had in the Pantiles. After that, non-Bacchanalian drinking included spa water and tea with Mr. and Mrs. Gray, to whom credit is expressed.

173. 26/08/82 SURREY - SUTTON: Convened by Chair; present SAR, Second Lady B. A wet station rendezvous, from which the Chair conducted the party across the road to the "WHISTLE STOP", a down market Berni. The Chair then led members to the "NEW TOWN" and the "NEW INN", which was a ruse intended to confuse the Minutes writer. The New Town had already been visited by the Society, and its split levels had already been noted. A new video game was noted in the New Inn, but was a flop, as poor scores were achieved.

Nick without Hat, Chair, SAR174. 28/08/82 CAMBRIDGESHIRE - CAMBRIDGE: Convened by Chair; present SAR, Sec, Nick without Hat, Second Lady B, Rita (Brazil). The party had lunch in the "GRANTA" and then gravitated to the bridge outside the "MILL", where an American tourist was dislodged from a punt, probably more due to Nick without Hat's rendition of "Just One Cornetto" than to the actual collision that occurred.

175. 03/09/82 LONDON SW1 - WESTMINSTER: Convened by SAR; present Sec, Alex, Second Lady B. The "ADMIRAL NELSON" (lunch time meeting).

03/09/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by SAR; present Aardvark-Bong, John, Alex, Second Lady B. The "HAND IN HAND".

176. 04/09/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Chair; present SAR, First Lady B, Second Lady B, Alex. The return to London of the Hartlepool representative was celebrated by members with a suitably large intake of Young's bitter at the "DOG AND FOX".

177. 05/09/82 KENT - HIGHAM/WROTHAM/MEOPHAM: Convened by Sec; present SAR, Alex, Second Lady B. The SAR ferried the party to Gravesend, where the Sec was collected, and navigated the meeting to the "SUN INN" Higham, which was accessed up a long track full of ducks, on marshy terrain near the Thames Estuary. There followed a sightseeing tour which took in Allhallows Holiday Estate, and then got mixed up in a Polish pilgrimage in Aylesford. MacDonalds was visited in Maidstone, and on the way back, the "ROSE AND CROWN" in Wrotham, and the "CRICKETERS" in Meopham, were visited. Tea was had at the Sec's residence.

178. 11/09/82 HAMPSHIRE - FARNBOROUGH: Convened by SAR; present Chair, First Lady B, Second Lady B, Maria and Marta (Poland), Matthew. This was an Aerobatic/Bacchanalian meeting, which was largely missed by the First Lady B; how she can sleep through a fly past of 5 Tornadoes is unknown. The Chair managed to procure a pint of Guinness at the Air Show, but the Bacchanalian part took place mostly in the "ALEXANDRA", a good, if basic, pub with darts and a juke box appreciated by a tired meeting.

179. 18/09/82 LONDON WC2 - COVENT GARDEN: Convened by Chair; present SAR, Sec, SOS, Growler, First Lady B, Second Lady B, Jane (SAR's cousin), Maria (Poland). The meeting opened with a good turnout at the traditional venue, the "MARQUIS OF ANGLESEY". A very rare appearance from the almost legendary Growler, who for some reason had chosen to live in Royston. The party, less Jane and Maria, ate at Tango's, the SAR suffering from the chili powder a bit. Members continued, under the direction of the Sec, to the "FREEMASON'S ARMS", which was surprisingly empty for a Saturday night.

180. 24/09/82 LONDON SE16/SE1 - ROTHERHITHE/SOUTHWARK: Convened by SAR; present Chair, Sec, SOS. Probably the wettest and most obscure meeting to date; real hard-core SLBS stuff. The party assembled in the "MAYFLOWER" and confirmed that it sold postage stamps. Riverside balcony appreciated. To get to the "ANGEL" the route involved squeezing through fence in semi-reclaimed land and generally getting wetter. Noted that the "British Humane Society's Apparatus Kept Here" - much speculation as to its nature. Returned to the "TOWER BRIDGE TAVERN" for Bermondsey Bitter - a strong one. Efforts by the Chair to prolong the meeting in the London Bridge Bar were quashed.

181. 29/09/82 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by WPR; present Chair, WPR, Second Lady B. The SAR and WPR met first and took Italian food at the Tavola Calda, then, returning to the "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS", met the Chair and Second Lady B. Second Lady B tried a complex psychological questionnaire on the Chair and WPR, involving horses, dwarves, rivers and walls, and one's reaction to them. The WPR was judged "terminally insane".

182. 01/10/82 LONDON E14 - LIMEHOUSE: Convened by SAR; present Chair, Sec. The meeting began in the "GRAPES" where another Bacchanalian society was present, which exhibited complex use of Minutes, obscure pub tastes, etc. The SAR and Sec had Whitebait, then the Chair came. Members moved on to "CHARLIE BROWN'S", a very basic rough East End pub, where a mural of a Caribbean harbour reminded one of the proximity of West India Docks. Finally the party visited the "FIVE BELLS AND BLADEBONE", where very interesting nautical memorabilia were noted; the "bladebone" referring to an abattoir which once occupied the site.

183. 03/10/82 LONDON SW11 - CLAPHAM: Convened by Rick; present SAR, Aardvark-Bong, John, Maria and Marta (Poland), Matthew. Another meeting convened in the ("101 CLUB") to see a performance of Rick's band.

184. 08/10/82 LONDON W11 - KENSINGTON: Convened by SAR; present Chair, WPR, Rick, Sec, IQ, John, Maria, Marta. This was a send-off for the SAR who was about to set off for Brazil. Members met at the "FROG AND FIRKIN" Tavistock Crescent, and then went to "ELGINS/FINCH'S" in Portobello Road.

185. 22/12/82 LONDON SW19 - WIMBLEDON: Convened by Chair; present WPR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong, Maria and Marta (of Poland). The venue was the "ALEXANDRA" and the following Polish proverb was aired by one of the guests: "Wesotych spriqt Boziego Narodzenia n szczesliwego Nowego Roku", which was translated as follows by Aardvark-Bong: "An Evening at the Zoo - The Animals were very interesting, Teacher said, look at the animals. They put their mouths together, they fall over, they endured another round. It was very interesting. Then we took their table, and they went back to their cages".

186. 31/12/82 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by WPR; present Rick, various LT people. A lunch time meeting occurred at the "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS". Quite a lot was had to drink, and members who were present could not remember the meeting.
