187. 06/01/83 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by WPR; present Chair, Rick. The "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS", after which Pizza was had.

188. 25/02/83 BRAZIL : BAHIA - SALVADOR: Convened by SAR; present Chair, Mike and Lesley (of England), Marcelo (husband of Lesley), Celina (of Bahia), others. The Chair arrived at Salvador after installing machinery to make beer cans in Sao Paulo. He was proffered a Beer by the SAR, who was stationed there, and was then sent on a sightseeing trip. After this the SAR convened a meeting in his quarters which featured numerous people, some of whom adjourned to the "KO-MALU" bar at around 1 a.m.

189. 26/02/83 BRAZIL : BAHIA - ITAPARICA: Convened by SAR; present Chair. A boat trip was made to the island of Itaparica and a Beer was had in "LENNON'S BAR", a fairly laid back sort of place, with a rather argumentative game of dominoes going on at the next table and a man crashed out on the ground below who rolled over and made a pronouncement on life every quarter of an hour or so. Food and further beer were had at the "POUSADA ARCO-IRIS", which was situated amidst palm trees, dogs and cats, and was the sort of place one could spend all afternoon in, which members did.

190. 26/02/83 BRAZIL : BAHIA - SALVADOR: Convened by SAR; present Chair. The evening meeting consisted of a Bahian meal ("v. bland" - the Chair) and necessary "chopps" in the "BARRAVENTO" where the south-east trades could be fully appreciated. Then the meeting retired to the "HABEAS COPOS" ("some kind of legal establishment?" - Chair), where the SAR had a G & T and the Chair further "Chopp". (Definitional Note: the word "Chopp" can refer to beer served on draught which can be of the "Antarctica" or "Brahma" variety, though normally the same were had by way of bottles).

191. 27/02/83 BRAZIL : BAHIA - SALVADOR: Convened by SAR; present Chair. The party adjourned to Monte Serrat to experience an ethnic type of meeting featuring a procession whereby offerings were made to Yemanja, the local sea-goddess, and a number of beers were had by way of noting the ceremony, the price being charged being way in excess of that actually pertaining, but as the bar owner was big and darkish members did not pursue argument. A meal was had in the Chinese restaurant "Yan Ping" and it should be noted that the Chair remained unconsumed by way of beer, which was unlike him.

192. /03/83 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by WPR; present Rick, others. The "NORTHUMBERLAND ARMS" - WPR's leaving do.

193. 23/04/83 LONDON WC2 - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Convened by the Society; present Chair, WPR, Rick, Pete & Jane, Sec, Nick without Hat, COB, John, SOS, First Lady B, Second Lady B, Mike, Teresa, Chris, Janet, Richard (friends of COB), Pete, Sara and another Pete. The meeting was held, as tradition dictates, at the "MARQUIS OF ANGLESEY". The first member to arrive was the Sec. The seat next to said member was vacated when the Chair, First Lady B and WPR made their appearance. Various samples were bought of the refreshments available and the meeting opened. The next member to arrive was the SOS, followed by Nick without Hat; refreshments were bought accordingly. The remaining members arrived in the following sequence and refreshment obtained as necessary: Rick, Pete & Jane, Second Lady B, John, Sara and Pete; the following arrived en masse - Mike, Teresa, Chris, Janet and Richard. Somewhere there was another Pete. Comment from the Second Lady B; "I arrived by 8 o'clock on 23rd April 1983, few new people, we got drunk and that's all". Member of the SLBS drunk! Keep up the good work. Comment made by anon. member; "Wot! Captain Sensible". At about this point in the proceedings the Chair announced the AGM was open and glasses were raised and emptied in the true tradition of the Society and the real business of the evening began. Various topics were discussed, e.g. the lack of effort on the part of the SAR to be present at the AGM, what's yours and what are you drinking were the main topics discussed. Samples tested by members were as follows: Young's Ordinary and Special, Cider, Ram Rod, Young's Lager, Vodka, tonic, coke. Members slowly dispersed, at one point the evening was enlightened by a duet between Nick without Hat and Pete friend of Sara and Rick. The other occupants of the establishment became rowdy towards the completion of the meeting (not the SLBS members, it might be added), and doused the First Lady B in beer twice. The meeting finally broke up as tradition dictates when "Time Gentlemen Please" was called. Note: The Sec was persuaded during the course of the meeting to give a display of the SLBS Nick with Hat, Cap, this being pointed out by the WPR with much enthusiasm to other members present.

194. /04/83 BERKSHIRE - HENLEY: Convened by Chair; present WPR, COB, First Lady B, Maria. The COB was formally invested with his title on this field trip, which also took in Wargrave and Twyford. Approximately 10 rail journeys were made, and the pubs visited were the "HORNS" and the "RAILWAY".

195. 17/05/83 LONDON SE1 - SOUTHWARK: Convened by Chair; present WPR, Rick, Sec, Nick without Hat, Maria and Marta. The "GEORGE". The Sec was involved in a dichotomy of meetings until the two were assimilated. There were possibly more people, whose sole contribution was to write their names on a piece of paper for the Chair.

196. 25/06/83 LONDON SW1 - VICTORIA: Convened by Chair; present WPR, Rick, Aardvark-Bong, Maria, Second Lady B. The party had to wait for the "VICTORIA TAVERN" to open, and sat outside. Certain members went to a "non-flock wallpaper" Indian restaurant.

197. 19/07/83 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by Chair; present WPR, Rick, SOS, Second Lady B. The "CAMBRIDGE" was the meeting place, followed by a visit to the "Pizza House" for pizza, spaghetti and meatballs.

198. 27/07/83 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by Chair; present WPR, Rick & Judy, Sec, IQ, Nick without Hat, Maria. The IQ was celebrating his birthday in the "CAMBRIDGE" and consequently created the impression that beer would no longer be available after this meeting.

199. 02/08/83 LONDON SE1 - SOUTHWARK: Convened by Chair; present WPR, COB, Pete & Jane, Mike & Teresa. The "GOOSE AND FIRKIN".

200. 02/08/83 BRAZIL : SAO PAULO - SAO PAULO: Convened by SAR; present SOS. The SOS arrived in Sao Paulo via Rio de Janeiro, and the SAR spent about two hours looking for him in the bus station, as neither member was in the agreed place. A meeting took place in the "DOUBLE HEAD", an English style establishment with darts.

201. 03/08/83 BRAZIL : SAO PAULO - SAO PAULO: Convened by SAR; present SOS. The SOS was taken to the district of Ibirapuera, where light and dark beers were had in the "ESTALAGEM", a large place with a Germanic atmosphere.

202. 04/08/83 BRAZIL : SAO PAULO - SAO PAULO: Convened by SAR; present SOS. The party inspected the Oriental district (Liberdade) and visited a seedy (and expensive) establishment, about which the less said the better. A cheap Oriental meal was had, however, followed by a walk to the "CAFE DO BIXIGA" in the Rua Treze de Maio, where several "chopps" were had.

203. 05/08/83 BRAZIL : SAO PAULO - SAO PAULO: Convened by SAR; present SOS. The party returned to the "DOUBLE HEAD" and then continued to the "QUEEN'S LEGS", where the SOS was overwhelmed by a rather over-entusiastic female, such that the party had to make a rapid exit during her visit to the Ladies Room.

204. 06/08/83 BRAZIL : SAO PAULO - SAO PAULO: Convened by SOS; present SAR, Nadir, Ana, Marly. The SOS insisted that a return be made to the "QUEEN'S LEGS" and as a result, a small group of Brazilian ladies were met, one of whom later became the SAR's wife.

205. 06/08/83 LONDON N1 - ISLINGTON: Convened by Rick; present Chair, WPR. This meeting was held in this particular geographical area as it was the last one in the SAR's book that the Society had not been to. The WPR and Rick shared a tube train with a colourful character who amused passengers greatly with his off-beat zany tie which went "cuckoo" when he pulled it. Needless to say, quite a hit with the audience. This was followed by a no less interesting visit to the "COCK", and then, interestingly enough, to the "HEN AND CHICKENS". Members were reminded of drawings in "A guide to London's best Pubs" by the general lack of humans and austere placement of bar furniture. Bass and Pils were consumed by way of liquid refreshment. Then the "BELINDA CASTLE" was visited, with gangsters dying all over the walls. The WPR departed, leaving the Chair and Rick to visit the "MYDDLETON ARMS", for a Guinness or something, in extremely boring surroundings (cf. Morgue). Members then walked for ages, had a good Indian meal, and dived off through a small alleyway to the "RED LION", which was the best and busiest hostelry visited. The meeting closed when the bell was rung violently.

206. 12/08/83 LINCOLNSHIRE - LINCOLN/HEIGHINGTON: Convened by First Lady B; present Chair, WPR, Nick without Hat, Maria, Second Lady B. This meeting, conceived/convened many weeks ago in Bayswater, took its place in the annals of Bacchanalian Minute taking in a rather dull pub reminiscent of many other dull pubs visited by the Society in Dunfermline, Wargrave, Epsom, etc. in the cause of Research. Flashback: having been turfed out of Heathrow Airport on the reasonable grounds that she didn't have a Venezuelan visa, the Second Lady B joined the party, which assembled at Hermon Hill, and then travelled to the ancient, Lincolnian city of Lincoln in a mobile billboard courtesy of Nick without Hat. Not being in a mood to hang around, the party set out straight away to the "WIG AND MITRE", where drinks and food were had. Traditionally, the last piece of bread was dipped into the ash tray (which was likened to a large soup bowl by members of the party who then discovered why), and a faux-pas was made by way of a request for more bread. After this an abortive attempt was made to get drinks at the Duke William, but on noting that it was run by Margaret and Claude Clark, the party fled, including Nick without Hat, who had been looking for his uncle but had obviously lost his nerve. At the "PRINCE OF WALES", more beer and video games were had, much money was spent, without, unfortunately, a corresponding increase in the standard of play. A television set mounted on the wall extinguished all witty conversation, and led to several Panorama-esque social comments. The members went to the "BUTCHER AND BEAST", Heighington, where they started to sing. A picture on the wall displayed extreme artistic licence, depicting the town of Walsall as a rocky outcrop, surrounded by sea, in the Land's End region. It was speculated that Rick was playing a heavy jazz/rock combo gig in a nearby tanker depicted, which by conjecture had to be Dudley.

207. 13/08/83 LINCOLNSHIRE - LINCOLN/HORNCASTLE/CONINGSBY/HEIGHINGTON: Convened by First Lady B; present Chair, WPR, Nick without Hat, Maria, Second Lady B. The itinerary followed at this meeting was: the "DUKE WILLIAM" Lincoln; the "BULL" and the "KING'S HEAD" Horncastle; the "LEA GATE ARMS" Coningsby, the "BUTCHER AND BEAST" Heighington. For some members the day started late and with a headache (for the reasons look at the previous day's minutes). Breakfast was had in the First Lady B's residence (cricket in large amounts, etc.), after which the party went to Lincoln and started sightseeing from the Duke William, which unfortunately had to be given a miss the previous day. After a refreshing pint, sightseeing continued in the Norman Castle and the Cathedral, where the Second Lady B got lost and appeared much later from the less expected direction. The peculiar chapel in the castle got a lot of attention because of its enormous amount of doors. Then the little monster called Emma was to be fed, so a trip back to Heighington was made. Later on an attempt to visit Tattershall Castle followed, but was not completed, as the party was stopped at the gate. So the trip was continued to Horncastle, where, of course, all pubs were closed until 6.30 p.m. First, the party went to the Bull, where the event called "Roast Pig" was held and featured many acts of cruelty to both animals and people. The King's Head was the second place visited in Horncastle, but left not many memories, except writing the birthday card for Nick without Hat in a rather nervous atmosphere during short moments of his absence. Then the party moved to Coningsby, where supper was had in Lea Gate Arms - large but quite a nice place. The evening was finished up in the local Butcher and Beast, which was a sort of anticlimax after the noisy singing in the car on the way back, and featured experiments with a torch.

208. 14/08/83 LINCOLNSHIRE - AUBOURN: Convened by First Lady B; present Chair, WPR, Nick without Hat, Maria, Second Lady B. The day started in the same way as the previous one, with the traditional English breakfast, which was had at lunch time. Half asleep members of the Society were entertaining the dog in the garden, and then went to Aubourn, where a lot of beer was distributed in the "ROYAL OAK". A tropical atmosphere was given by the Chair with his overseas T-shirt, then Nick without Hat started to behave badly, but it was forgiven him by his generous friends knowing about his birthday (it is the effect of age).

209. 17/08/83 LONDON W1 - BLOOMSBURY: Convened by WPR; present Chair, Nick without Hat, Maria and Marta. After a visit to the "CAMBRIDGE", the party proceeded to the ("100 CLUB") to see Dick Scratchin' and the Crazy Band.

210. 31/08/83 LONDON W1 - SOHO: Convened by Chair; present WPR. This exclusive meeting started at the "IMPERIAL", featured in sketch form in the pub book. The party then wasted a few minutes searching for the "Avenue" (demolished) then went on to the "CARLISLE ARMS", after failing to locate the Three Greyhounds, and passing up the Pillars of Heracles. The Carlisle Arms was visited by way of fighting into the corner (see guide) and avoiding amateur magicians at the kerbside. The Chair had 2 pints. Then members looked around the Dog & Duck, without having anything to drink. Following this, the meeting sat outside at the "COACH AND HORSES" Poland Street/Great Marlborough Street, then wandered around for a while and ended up at the "Berwick Tandoori" (nowhere near the Tweed), and admired the blue caricatures on the walls. Then on to the "STAR AND GARTER", advertised as "pleasant and crowded", but that was just a joke. There were leering sketches of Fred Astaire etc. on the wall, and 6 other customers. A move was then made to the "GREEN MAN" Berwick Street, which was full of unnotable wall prints. Finally, a visit was made to the "only pub in Oxford Street", namely the "TOTTENHAM", on Oxford and Tottenham. It was better than it looked from outside. Extra-finally, a drink was had at the "BLUE POSTS" Newman Street, where difficulty was experienced due to door identification problems.

211. 03/09/83 SURREY - SUTTON: Convened by Chair: present WPR, First Lady B. Members met on a train from London Bridge. Discussions were held beforehand by the Chair and First Lady B on how to open the door without tapping the WPR's head. The meeting was opened by the Chair at the "NEW TOWN" where 2 pints of Ordinary and 1 DM & L were had by way of liquid refreshment. The pub had three levels, which disorientated the WPR, who went downstairs to level 1 instead of up to level 3 where the rest of the party had assembled. The next stop was the "NEW INN" (Youngs), which was very crowded, with a sticker on the window saying that the PRS claimed responsibility for all music/muzak played on the premises. Actually, this was not bad, ranging from Hey Jude to Abba - perhaps it was bad. The WPR was reminded of Stoke, but the Chair pointed out that it could be anywhere. Reminiscences of the best of Candid Camera were discussed at length. No problems with the door. The "RED LION" provoked a comment from the Chair about its recent refurbishment, and then he retold the tale of a man who started to undress trousers first on his last visit to the establishment. Courage Best and G & T were consumed by the party, who were absorbed by the fruit machine, around which they were assembled. Investments of an entrepreneurial nature were eventually made but no return evident. Another abortive expedition was made to the 213a bus stop but as usual the good burghers of Sutton had ripped down the timetable. First Lady B said "What about the "CRICKETERS?"- the one the party went to next, the one with the bad beer and the juke box - it was anticipated that they had put on (Sexual) Healing twenty times; the beer was awful, it was bad. The Chair got Skol by mistake, but it was probably the best on offer. Onward, Ho! to the "ANGEL" where a "Ye Olde Tudor" juke box was spotted, but no Ye Olde Tudor tunes found; a few Dean Martin ones however. Large signed photographs of Minter and Magri were noted. The Chair commented that the beer was a lot better than at the last establishment, where he tried the WPR's pint of Sarson's Blue Light investigated by WPR and Chair (Beam me up Scotty!). The Chair declared the meeting closed at 22.55 (unlike him) then proceeded to drink the chewy remains of First Lady B's drink.

212. 10/10/83 LONDON SE1 - SOUTHWARK: Convened by Chair, present WPR, Maria. A meeting was held in the "GEORGE" to celebrate the return to Albion of two constitutional members, and the decision to stay British by the third. The meeting was rather depleted due to pottery classes, mortgages, world tours, Bolivian holidays, etc. Photos of Lincoln were exchanged, and a party of Germans livened the proceedings in their inimitable way. Nevertheless, the meeting was enjoyed by all present (those who bothered to turn up).

213. 29/10/83 LONDON SW6 - HAMMERSMITH: Convened by Chair; present WPR, Sec. After arranging a meeting in the Queens Head, Brook Green, the WPR noticed instead a Young's pub on the way, the "BROOK GREEN HOTEL", and on entering was not surprised to find that the other members of the party had had the sense to go in there too. The beer was good, but the pub was full of old men, so the meeting moved on to the "BUILDERS" after attempting to direct a group of theatregoers to the Lyric, who then announced that they knew where it was anyway. Less old men, but the ones there were, were much older, lending a forlorn air to the "Frontline" game (a "comical strategic war game"). Bad films were discussed, maps studied and peanuts consumed. V. good darts players were in evidence. Stock of glasses above bar not likely to be in circulation all at once on this night. Then a walk was undertaken to reach the "DOVE", but the meeting took on a surreal nature, as members passed various (hopping) three-legged race participants in the dark on the riverbank. The Dove was full of rugger hearties, one of whom, in profile, resembled the SAR completely in manner, gesture, looks, facial expression, but not front view. Unnerved but intrigued by this spiritual projection, the party headed off to the "CROSS KEYS" (party-party), passing walking bandaged patients reminiscent of a character in Catch 22 (The Soldier in White?).
