667. 02-01-93 LONDON - WEST END: WPR; COB, SOS. Members met in the "MOON UNDER WATER" where they saw someone who looked like Nick without Hat. They then proceeded to the Odeon Haymarket to view "Single White Female", which turned out to be gruesome in the "Psycho" vein, but it was remarked that the seats were spacious and comfortable. The downstairs bar in the nearby "CAMBRIDGE", Cambridge Circus, was crowded with louts so the party went to the upstairs bar which was less crowded with the same. The SOS described a football match between Tottenham Hotspur and Marlow which he had seen earlier in the day.

668. 04-01-93 LONDON SE23 - WEST NORWOOD: Tony (not the BS); SAR & N, COB, SOS; Phyllis. This meeting took place in the "ROSE AND CROWN" which was said by the Convener to have a greater range of beers than it in fact did. Pints of Websters and Courage Best were had. Tony described his experiences as a bus driver to an enthralled audience, and the mystery of why buses always turn up in twos and threes was explained.

669. 12-01-93 JON SNOW QUIZ: Sec, WPR, BS, Oracle, Paul, Fiona [1st]

670. 19-01-93 JON SNOW QUIZ: Sec, WPR, Paul, Fiona, Jill (briefly) [Honourable 3rd]

20-01-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: SLBS teams [1st and 2nd]. An evening which was so successful that no members could remember attending.

671. 27-01-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS, Fiona, Tim, Phil [1st] / Oracle, Sec, GR, Paul

672. 29-01-93 LONDON - SOHO: BS; Oracle, Sec; Paul, numerous present and former Logica staff. BS's "Logica" leaving party at "RED LION", Kingly Street.

673. 02-02-93 LONDON NW1: COB; BS, Single Pippin, GWR; a friend from France. Inaugural "First Tuesday meeting", as proposed at Christmas meeting, in "MAN IN THE MOON" (Wetherspoons). Spectacular consumption of Courage Directors increased/protracted by late arrival of other participants.

674. 03-02-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS, Phil, Tim [1st] / GR, Sec, Oracle. GR's team obtained most embarrassing score to date of 9 out of 30. Pub unusually full of rival teams as a result of people unable to get home after security alert on tube.

07-02-93 MIDDLESEX - KEW: SAR; N, COB. A meeting was attempted in the "FLOWER AND FIRKIN", but failed as no beer was available.

675. 17-02-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: Sec, BS, Tim, Phil [1st].

676. 19-02-93 BATTERSEA BEER FESTIVAL: BS; WPR; Ryan. WPR's first drink after return from Orient (not Leyton). Traditional event. Seats found for once.

677. 20-02-93 HAMPSHIRE / SUSSEX: GR; Sec; Caroline. The GR and Sec travelled to Winchester in the former's car, where collected Caroline and proceeded to visit Midhurst, Petersfield, East Meon and sundry villages. The "BRICKLAYER'S ARMS", Midhurst, a pleasantly timbered pub was visited for lunch, but food service was refused by proprietor as it was 30 seconds after 2:00, so members contented themselves with Abbott/cider there, and subsequent sandwiches in nearby Cowdray Park. A spectacularly out-of-tune children's orchestra was encountered rehearsing in Petersfield church, before returning to Winchester for coffee, thence back to Surbiton.

678. 20-02-93 LONDON - HORNSEY: COB; Anth, WPR.. Comedy evening promised in "RED ROSE CLUB" but WPR refused to sign pledge of allegiance to Labour Party despite being the only member who had voted for them in the last election. So party were forced to look elsewhere for drink: "FAT SAM'S" recommended by Anth and COB; good beer but an ongoing party made it too noisy so moved to "KING'S HEAD": enormous with large comfortable sofas, upon which the party settled only for boxing to be (loudly) shown on the nearby TV. A noisy evening. On the way there, "TORRINGTON" commended for turning down custom by refusing to serve members cloudy beer and directing them to a suitable venue with better beer.

679. 24-02-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: Sec, WPR, Paul / BS, Oracle. Came nowhere. Unfortunately split into two teams, but even a unified team would have struggled.

680. 28-02-93 KENT - CANTERBURY: Anth; WPR, COB. Trip to Kent in Anth's Car, to investigate Vegetarian restaurant in Canterbury. Meals taken included woody stew. In Canterbury: "CHERRY TREE": Quiet. Read papers. Fullers London Pride and some IPA had. Highly praised by COB for its good quality beer and real log fire. "FALSTAFF TAP": Also quiet until Anth put on some Jukebox faves. Barman locked up and sat around waiting for members to leave. Then a tour of the south coast: Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate before being chauffeured home by Anth.

681. 02-03-93 LONDON NW1 - CAMDEN TOWN: COB; Sec, WPR, BS. Second "First Tuesday Meeting", in "MAN IN THE MOON". Youngs, Bass etc. + food. WPR showed more holiday snaps. All but Sec later proceeded to the newly-opened "FUSILIER AND FIRKIN" - pretty standard as Firkin pubs go. COB made a dash for a bus but was unsuccessful.

682. 06-03-93 LONDON - KING'S CROSS: WPR; BS, COB, SOS. "FRIAR AND FIRKIN", Euston Road: Convened by WPR prior to his dispatch to Cambridge. Another new Firkin pub - so like all the others, no novelty. Pints of Confessional and Friar had, and half pints of Dogbolter by the SOS. Patrick did not arrive. WPR and BS had a late night drink in "QUEEN'S ARMS", Caledonian Road, from 10:30 to 1:00. Entrance fee supposedly charged, but not in practice. Solo Irish singer with guitar and computer.

683. 10-03-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS (quizmaster) / WPR, Tim, Phil [2nd] / Sec, Paul, Simon / GR and two friends. Quiz night hosted by BS. The WPR, Tim and Phil team's scrupulous honesty in not answering a question they had supplied to the BS ensured they narrowly missed first place. BS was congratulated for a successful quiz but also taken to task about one or two questions, or rather answers, he got from a book. The Oracle, who was to have co-hosted the quiz, had instead gone to ground and could not be traced. On his way there, the WPR was surprised to see a taxi run over a traffic light.

684. 12-03-93 CAMDEN BEER FESTIVAL: BS; Sec, WPR; Ryan. Traditionally the most crowded day of the most crowded beer festival of the year, held as usual in "CAMDEN TOWN HALL". BS and Ryan initially failed to meet but finally teamed up with Sec who used old SLBS techniques to obtain seating in the Foreign Beer and Food room. An interesting selection of brews was sampled, despite the customary overcrowding: Exmoor Gold, Holdens, Larkins, McMullens, Mansfield Old Bailey. The last sausages of the evening were obtained in the snack bar by all members except WPR who arrived from Cambridge after they had run out and instead could only experience them in anecdotal form. The WPR and BS had a post-festival drink in "QUEEN'S ARMS", Caledonian Road, this time in the Pool room as far away from the singer as possible.

685. 13-03-93 LONDON - KING'S CROSS: COB; WPR. Late evening (10 O'clock) meeting in "FRIAR AND FIRKIN" to hand over car.

686. 17-03-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS, Oracle, WPR, Paul [1st equal] / Rick. Completely teetotal quiz for the BS team, participants all suffering from earlier indulgence or caution about the following morning. Came first equal due to fortuitous marking error, and the BS and WPR indulged in alcohol to the tune of one pint, the Oracle having a whisky. Rick helped out using up the winnings.

687. 19-03-93 LONDON - KENTISH TOWN: BS; Oracle, WPR. Final visit to "TOWN AND COUNTRY CLUB" as such, to see a solid and thoroughly enjoyable performance by "The Squeeze". Seats upstairs obtained after the support act had finished as usual. Speculation on the nature of the refurbishment to take place before it reopened as "The Forum".

688. 24-03-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: COB, Sec, Simon [1st] / BS, Oracle, WPR [2nd]. A highly successful evening for the Society in a low scoring contest. Beer was consumed this time.

689. 27-03-93 EALING BEER FESTIVAL: BS; Paul, WPR, COB, Sec; Ryan, Simon. There was a good turnout for the third SLBS visit to the Beer on Broadway CAMRA beer festival in "EALING TOWN HALL". A potential non-optimal utilisation of resources was nearly occasioned by the CAMRA members (WPR, Ryan, BS) arriving before four o'clock when entrance was free, thus not making full and effective use of their membership. Simon, the COB and the Sec, none of whom were members, arrived after the deadline and would have had to pay, had not the WPR's CAMRA membership card been smuggled out and deployed on their behalves, though in the case of the Sec too late to stop him from paying up. Beer sampled included: Black Sheep: Best Bitter (1038): a tasty relation of Theakstons; Border Old: Kiln Bitter (1036): another tasty northern bitter; Yates: Bitter (1035): not much taste; Thwaites: Bitter (1036): OK; Woodforde: Wherry (1039): praised; Ridley: IPA (1035): cheap. The COB and WPR went for a meal nearby, where they were later joined by the BS and Sec (having had a long wait for the COB's vegeburger).

690. 27-03-93 LONDON - FINSBURY PARK: Rick; Judy, Simon, BS, WPR, COB, Sec, BRA; Tim. In the evening the party moved to the "HORNSEY WOOD TAVERN" for another enjoyable and rousing concert by Rick's band "The Inspectors".

691. 03-04-93 LONDON - WEST END: WPR; COB. Upstairs bar in "CAPTAIN'S CABIN" visited after attending BBC pilot show "East of Chigley". BS had already been there and left for Islington with his parents.

692. 04-04-93 LONDON - WEST END: WPR; BS; Ryan. Excellent double recording of BBC show "Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation" was followed by severe urban geographical orientational difficulties with regard to locating "GLASSBLOWERS" which reduced drinking time to one drink each.

693. 06-04-93 LONDON NW1: COB; Chair, Sec, SOS, BS. First Tuesday meeting in "MAN IN THE MOON". Youngers, Abbott, Fullers. Members were shocked to find the Chairman in London. The BS sampled the newly introduced Cumberland Sausage Ring, which he recommended, despite its close resemblance to a canine waste product, and sneezed at everyone.

07-04-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS; others. Another Quiz night hosted by BS.

694. 09-04-93 LONDON - WEST END / VICTORIA: COB; WPR. Good Friday. The occasion of the meeting was a viewing of "Wittgenstein" at the ICA. The WPR arrived slightly late, almost fulfilling a dream he had had the previous night. The cinema bar having been found to lack real ale, St. James's Park was crossed to reach "ADAM AND EVE", a comfortable empty pub where 6X was had. The COB ate a vegetarian burger while the WPR watched a nearby German play a video game. Further research was performed in "WETHERSPOON'S", a dazzlingly illuminated glass greenhouse perched above Victoria Station, causing the COB to remark that the Wetherspoon's Organisation had gone off the rails. Outside was sat, 6X was drunk and the lack of movement of trains noted as was a faulty station clock which displayed non Babylonian times such as 70 and 90 seconds past each minute.

695. 12-04-93 ISLE OF WIGHT - RYDE: COB; WPR, BS. Easter Monday. The COB's Good Beer Guide was used to locate the "CASTLE", Hist Street, where excellent Gales XXX was consumed. Several other locations were also sampled but were found to be inferior, resulting in a return to the "CASTLE".

696. 13-04-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; SOS. An uncertain start was made when the SOS, having been informed in error that the WPR was not at home, paid a solo visit to the "SALISBURY ARMS". The meeting was therefore properly opened in the no smoking bar of the "LIVE AND LET LIVE", where a large selection of real ales was viewed but sampled only in moderation. Historical note: This was the first time that the SOS and WPR had knowingly been in a pub together in Cambridge although each had spent the years 1975 to 1978 there performing separate lines of research. The SOS then led the WPR to the Kite, a nostalgic area for them both, where an Eastern style window display was inspected before entering the "FREE PRESS", a completely no smoking establishment where the SOS's political maps of France were reviewed and Abbott drunk. This establishment being too crowded, dinner by way of soup and savoury pancakes was taken in a pavilion on Parker's Piece. A final quick visit was paid to the "SALISBURY ARMS", reputedly owned by CAMRA and extremely noisy, before the SOS returned to E12.

697. 14-04-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: Sec, BS, Simon [Joint 1st] / Oracle, Paul, Fiona [Joint 1st]

698. 17-04-93 LONDON - WEST END / ISLINGTON: WPR; COB, Anth, Patrick. The long awaited reappearance of Patrick took place in the "MOON UNDER WATER", which was far too crowded for members who then spent a while debating where to go instead. Conflicting requirements re: the ratio of food and drink input required resulted in a tube journey to Islington to research "WETEHERSPOON'S", 179 Upper Street, yet another newly opened Wetherspoon's pub. Despite having most of the ingredients for a good pub - a variety of real ales, a no smoking area, somewhere to stand outside in the summer - it was felt to lack individuality and to have no soul. The COB gave helpful advice to the bar staff regarding the non vegan status of mayonnaise.

699. 20-04-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; COB. A rushed evening, covering town and Station areas. The "EAGLE", "LIVE AND LET LIVE" and SALISBURY ARMS" were visited but full of youngsters. An imaginatively presented meal was had in the "King's Pantry" (King's Parade).

700. 21-04-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: WPR, Rick, Judy [Joint 2nd] / Paul, Fiona, Kevin [Joint 3rd] / GR, Fiona (another),Keith [Joint 3rd] / Sec, Oracle, Simon. A large showing, in which the Sec's team achieved another embarrassing score.

701. 23-04-93 LONDON - NEWHAM: SOS; WPR. Visit paid to E. London by WPR on way back from Cambridge. Tour of locality in COB's car. Yet another new Wetherspoon's pub "MILLER'S WELL", same as all the others. Break for Sri Lankan meal: Very Hot soup for SOS and Stringhoppers for WPR. "HOLLY TREE" praised by SOS for its atmosphere despite its unsuitable extension.

702. 27-04-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; Chair. Stood outside "MILL". Fluid dynamics observed. Then nearby "EAGLE" - had to stand. Proceeded through St. John's College to "PICKEREL" but bar split in two so not visited. Henry's Bar in new development also found unsuitable. "SPADE AND BECKETT" OK. Money lost on trivia machine. "COACH AND HORSES", King Street looked OK as passed so went in. Curry in Koh-i-Noor near WPR's residence. Chair escorted to station.

703. 28-04-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS (quizmaster) / Sec, GR, Oracle [1st] / Paul, Phil, Tim [2nd]

704. 01-05-93 LONDON - MARYLEBONE: WPR; COB, Anth, SOS. May Day. COB and WPR got off to an early start in "BRITANNIA TAP" (Young's) - smelly beer garden. Full meeting started in "ANGEL TAVERN" (Sam Smiths), Thayer Street - lots of noisy but well behaved Wigan and Widnes fans. "BLACK HORSE" (Free) - Eldridge Pope, Royal Oak had. Various separate conversations. "PRINCE REGENT" - London Pride. "Famed for its Cheese Dishes". Money lost on trivia machine. SOS cleverly located "LINCOLN", Blandford Street, which he and the WPR had visited before. Old Peculier had.

705. 04-05-93 LONDON NW1: COB; SAR + N, Sec, BS, GR. The SAR + N's return to Europe was celebrated in the "MAN IN THE MOON". It was necessary for the in-pub location to be varied on two occasions due to temperature divergences. Food, mostly Cumberland sausages, was had.

706. 05-05-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS; COB Paul, Fiona, Oracle. The Oracle arrived late and was shunned by the others.

707. 08-05-93 LONDON - HOLBORN: Sec; BS, Chair, COB, WPR, SOS, SAR + N, Anth, Oracle, Rick; Mark. Annual General Meeting. Held in the "YORKSHIRE GREY", this was the first time for years that all founder members, in fact all committee members, were present. COB distributed silver platters and edible flowers. WPR distributed XFM leaflets. SOS and SAR made customary lists of islands and underground railways they had visited. Several non appearances due to more pressing engagements e.g. Hen night in Ealing, visiting Dentist in Norfolk, watching paint dry.

708. 11-05-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; SAR + N. Walk through Downing and Pembroke to "MILL"; Banks and Taylor, H&H had; photograph by river. N v. hungry so through Corpus Christi to meal in "The Eraina Taverna", previously "Eros", in Free School Lane, then headed for "MITRE" as preparation for "BARON OF BEEF" next door; however this was not reached as members were too full to drink. Halves of Adnams; gothic pub, flagstones, tombstone like decorations on walls, dark, large chairs. On to "RADEGUND", halves again, smallest pub in Cambridge, photograph taken. College and Porcupine Club photos and maps of Far East on walls; rugger and rowing graffiti all over ceiling. Members got lost in the Kite before finally discovering "ELM TREE", halves again where the SAR declared that he was full and that the meeting was therefore closed. Retired to the WPR's (temporary) residence in Mawson Road for the night. All pubs visited on this meeting had several real ales.

709. 12-05-93 HERTFORDSHIRE - BISHOP'S STORTFORD: Chair; WPR. Meeting convened to allow Chair to explore pubs in his local patch. Up hill to "COCK" (Greene King), full of Geordies. Into town to spacious but deserted "STAR"; excellent Benskins. More money lost on trivia machine. Walk to "JOLLY BREWERS"; more money lost on trivia machine. London Pride had. Returned to "COCK" for Quiz night. Came fifth in a tight contest with 33/40. Presided over by old boy strikingly reminiscent of a thoroughly sozzled Snotty Clarke, who kept encouraging team - "that's tremendous for just the two of you", etc. Food provided on the house, obviating need for curry. Chair resolved to return with Kath.

710. 12-05-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: Rick, Judy, Tim, Phil / BS, Sec; Simon, Ryan [2nd]. Concurrent with the Bishop Stortford meeting, other members gathered in a traditional location to make up a busy quiz night for the Society.

711. 15-05-93 SUSSEX - STEYNING / SURREY - SURBITON: GR; Sec. Steyning, Bramber, Shoreham-by-Sea, Sompting, Storrington. An excellent Sausage Ploughmans and Morland Old Speckled Hen was had for lunch. The Sec utilised the children's conveniences (subsequently found to be marked "Little Darlings"), having failed to note the adjacent adult ones, marked "Farmers" and "Milkmaids", at the "STAR INN", Steyning, another feature of which was a large selection of walking sticks suspended from the ceiling. Afternoon tea was had at Storrington, prior to the traditional return for Youngs as the "VICTORIA", Surbiton.

25-05-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; Ryan. Met in "BARON OF BEEF", which had not been achieved on a previous meeting. 2 pints Abbott - very quiet. Walked by riverside to "SPADE AND BECKETT", sat outside with noisy Americans. Ruddles and Wethereds had. Little river traffic. Across town with aid of map to "RADEGUND" - halves of Nethergate. Gent who went overland to India in 1957 in bar. Ryan explained about Alexander the Great. Decision taken to eat in pub as otherwise would cut into drinking time. Into Kite to "FREE PRESS". Greene King IPA and meal had. Cats indoors, rabbits in outside bar. One claimed as cousin by Ryan. Ryan's favourite pub of the evening. Failed to direct lads with aid of map. Went to "TRAM DEPOT", sat upstairs on balcony overlooking main bar. 2 halves. Feeling drunk and wanted coffee but none served. Final pointless 2 halves of Tanglefoot in "LIVE AND LET LIVE", only half drunk. Ryan to station.

712. 28-05-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: Sec, Ryan, Rick / BS, Simon, Phil. No prizes awarded to either team.

713. 30-05-93 ESSEX - SOUTHEND: SOS; WPR. Car trip. Basildon - shopping centre, statue, roundabouts, B. Zoo not visited. Broomway, Foulness - walked into sea and found later there were unexploded bombs and mines. Like no mans land in Berlin, watchtowers and desolation. Red roses discovered at point where path met sea. Southend - "Air Show", consisting of Air but no Aeroplanes at all. "THE DICKENS" visited (halves) as traditional. Evening stopover in Leigh - "THE PETER BOAT" - sat outside and waatched youth of Essex at courting rituals.

714. 02.06.93 LONDON W1 - ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: Sec, Ryan, Rick, BS, Simon, Phil.

715. 05-06-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; Chair, Kath, COB. SLBS Summer School Day 1, Session 1. Members met outside the "MILL" (Free), where cider and beer were consumed and a small number of punts observed. At the nearby "ANCHOR" (Free), Old Speckled Hen and Brakspear were had. A punt operator with braces and boater spoilt the effect by having a fag in the corner of his mouth. At the "GRANTA" (Greene King), the third riverside pub, Kath rushed home to mow the curtains and iron the lawn, and the Chairman regaled the remainder with stories of floods and drug development at Glaxo. It then being time to meet the Sec, the party went to the Market Square via a choir rehearsal in King's College Chapel, and then the enlarged group took lunch in "The Eraina Taverna" in Free School Lane where the COB just kept his temper when served a meal containing cheese.

716. 05-06-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; Chair, COB, Sec. SLBS Summer School Day 1, Session 2. Afternoon drinks of Adnams, Abbott and K&B Sussex were taken in the "MITRE" (Free), a dark establishment in Gothic/Art Nouveau style. A sudden craving for a Trivia Machine to pour money into was finally satisfied in the "CAMBRIDGE ARMS" (Greene King), King Street, with multilevel bars and a post-modernist tone.

717. 05-06-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; COB, Sec. SLBS Summer School Day 1, Session 3. The evening session started at the WPR's local, the "LIVE AND LET LIVE" (Free): cosy, basic and woodwork-lined with very constricted table space. Everard's Tiger, Adnams, Old Speckled Hen had. The proposed highlight of the evening, a visit to the "FREE PRESS" (Greene King) was marred by the wearisome presence of a vocal US scientist on the next table, so a move was made to the nearby "ELM TREE" (Free), where Adnams Broadside and Charles Wells Eagle IPA were had in a pleasant, more "local" atmosphere.

718. 06-06-93 CAMBRIDGESHIRE - GRANTCHESTER: WPR; COB, Sec. SLBS Summer School Day 2, Session 1. "GREEN MAN" - Adnams and orange juice had. The Sec, COB and WPR rested in the narrow Beer Garden following a leisurely stroll round the nearby meadows and river bank.

719. 06-06-93 CAMBRIDGE: WPR; Sec. SLBS Summer School Day 2, Session 2. Following the COB's departure by train, proceedings continued at the "SIX BELLS" (Greene King). No sandwiches, but pleasant and smartly kept "local" with diminutive Beer Garden. Brakspear's and enormous sandwiches made from left over Sunday roast were consumed in the "SALISBURY ARMS", notable for its unusual decor (including bicycle suspended from ceiling), gentlemanly landlord and colourfully dressed fellow drinkers.

720. 06-06-93 LONDON - WEMBLEY: Rick; Judy, Sec, WPR, Anth, John (Ooeaurgh); Friends of John (Ooeaurgh). Brief drink in "THE TORCH" prior to concert by the "Velvet Underground".

721. 11-06-93 LONDON - SHEPHERD'S BUSH: COB; WPR. Car returned. "MOON ON THE GREEN" - Veg. dish off. Sat in non smoking basement, near toilets, tiled floor, less plush and lively than upstairs, friendly staff. Rain so explored "BEAUFORT ARMS" next door - 3 handpumps, all Bass. Large, 2 unconnected bars, empty. Good site wasted. Curry afterwards in restaurant which became deserted.

722. 12-06-93 LONDON - ST.JAMES'S PARK: COB; Anth, WPR. After the COB and Anth had seen film "Vaches", the WPR joined them for drinks in "BUCKINGHAM ARMS" (Youngs), Petty France. Soldiers with machine guns guarding Barracks opposite. Group of New Yorkers inside, cross between Cheers and Golden Girls. Discussed Sport and Politics.

723. 16-06-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS [quizmaster], Phil [question-setter], Sec, Simon, Paul, Fiona [1st] / Rick, Phil, another.

724. 18-06-93 LONDON - KING'S CROSS: COB; WPR. Short meeting in "FRIAR AND FIRKIN" to hand over car.

725. 25-06-93 LONDON - OLYMPIA: COB; Anth, BS, WPR; many others. COB's 35th birthday party, held at his residence, preceded by meeting in "FRIGATE AND FIRKIN".

726. 02-07-93 LONDON - HOLLAND PARK: WPR; COB. Car returned. Large crowds in garden of "WINDSOR CASTLE" considered off-putting so went instead to nearby "UXBRIDGE ARMS" (Whitbread), Uxbridge Street; lager and Boddington's had; small, pleasant, towny, narrow frontage with a few tables outside. Mexican meal followed by slow consumption of 2 pints Ordinary in "HOOP" (Young's).

727. 04-07-93 WILTSHIRE - AVEBURY: COB; Ryan, WPR; Sozen, Emma. Outing in COB's car, enlivened by Sozen's coprolalia. Lunch had in "STONES" vegetarian restaurant where Ryan's sister Emma worked. Ryan granted membership of the SLBS in the "RED LION" (Strongs) after delivery of the by now traditional manifesto which in this case involved the purchase of halves of Morrell's Graduate, subject to him choosing a title. Prehistoric stones and a more recent and less mysterious crop circle inspected, then a quick evening visit to the "RED LION", the only pub in town.

728. 06-07-93 LONDON - WANDSWORTH: COB; Sec, SAR+N, BS, GWR, Single Pippin. The "First Tuesday" Meeting took place outside until the third round. The venue had been changed from the usual location to the "COUNTY ARMS" (Youngs) in deference to the Single Pippin and GWR who were late. Pleasantly rural back garden, despite close proximity to Wandsworth prison. The BS was drinking orange and lemonade because of antidotes being taken for a string of mysterious ailments. The GWR and Single Pippin were restored to membership despite a less than regular attendance at meetings, when it was pointed out that they were Bath based.

729. 10-07-93 LONDON - HOLBORN: COB; Anth, WPR. "FULMAR AND FIRKIN", Parker Street. Several rounds of different permutations of "Fulmar" and "Wingspan", in large and basically furnished latest addition to Firkin chain. Food only available Monday to Friday. Strategic position taken up early on for good view of free comedy show (2 acts). Gina Ryan: Long hair, Essex poetess. COB and WPR in favour, Anth anti ("crap"). Noel James: Disjointed and rambling performance from manic Welsh "character" ("worse than crap"). Hardly heard above general hubbub; late and lamentable.

730. 12-07-93 LONDON - KING'S CROSS: WPR; COB, Chair, SAR+N, Rick, Judy; Yurika, Selma. Constitutional Conference called by the WPR to revise the Society's 1980 Constitution, held in the "WATERSIDE INN". Several amendments were made and the year 2006 pencilled in for the next revision. Further debate was terminated on arrival of Yurika's party, and Yurika was welcomed back, with reminiscences of her previous zeal in pursuing the Object of the Society. The Chairman unfortunately showed no such zeal and suddenly left, as did the COB a few minutes later, due to oncoming old age and the effect of "Old Growler" and other strong beers. The remainder of the evening saw members split into two groups: the men discussing records, beer and records about beer, and the women conversing in Portuguese. Later the meeting dissolved; Rick and Judy went off to purloin food and the WPR disappeared down a dark alley.

731. 14-07-93 KENT - RAMSGATE: BS; WPR. The Inspection of Ramsgate Drinking Establishments got underway at midday when the BS met the WPR at the station and led him straight out to the "ARTILLERY ARMS", Westcliff Road, a small, friendly, genuine Free House. Hambleton's (dark, tasty) and Beechwood (lighter, also good bitter taste) were served in over filled glasses by the landlady who obligingly helped members' research by looking up the beers in the Camra guide. The next location, the "BEDFORD INN" (Shepherd Neame), was just across the road and featured further overfilled pints and a basic food menu whose prices went up as members watched. Lunch conversation was interrupted by electric sander and drill and questionably shriller Cilla Black records. Selection of other dire and Dire records. The afternoon was spend browsing and visiting the Sally Lines office to book tickets to Dunkirk, followed by entertainment of video and dinner at the BS's parents' house. The evening meeting commenced at the "EAST KENT ARMS" (Boundary Road), 11 years after the previous SLBS visit, where members sat outside among children's toys and, appropriately it was felt, stocks. 2 halves Pendragon had; WPR feeling bloated after large helping of pork steak and mash, cooked by BS. Further research in Boundary Road was attempted in the "KING OF DENMARK" which was found to lack real ale, so continued in the "FORESTERS ARMS" (Shepherd Neame), identified despite its lack of Pub sign; a small quiet local like many others, with more 60s music. Nearby Margate Road also proved difficult, with the "SHAKESPEARE", which advertised Cask Ale but had none and the "SOUTH EASTERN TAVERN", which claimed to have Belhaven Ale but had no Belhaven or any cask ale both being rejected. Instead, the station area was tried, with a visit to the "ELLINGTON ARMS" (Shepherd Neame), off Station Approach - a Youth Pub, although most of the youth left when the SLBS entered. One pint Masons dark ale (fruity) and half a pint Bishops Finger (also strong) had amid upbeat music. A final drink was proposed in the nearby "FLYING HORSE" but this had no real ale either so the venue was instead used as a liquid deposit facility. However, the evening was rounded off successfully with a lucky find in the "ADMIRAL FOX" (Whitbread), Grange Road, one of the BS's old haunts. 2 welcome pints of Pedigree had in multi-barred, very empty, quiet and cosy surroundings. BS spotted evidence of late night drinking but this turned out to be a plastic replica Guinness glass attached to the Guinness tap.

732. 15-07-93 KENT - CANTERBURY / RAMSGATE: BS; WPR. The WPR spent the day worrying about his stomach. Breakfast was taken in Starburger opposite "Fungus Mungus", an eating location at an earlier event. Pints of Davenport and Friary Meux were enjoyed outside "OLIVE BRANCH", Burgate Street, a pleasant central location, surrounded by tourists and school children. A visit was made to the cathedral where illicit photography occurred. Many pubs were found to be shut in the afternoon but the very comfortable "SEVEN STARS", Orange Street, was located. 2 pints Boddingtons; pub quiet apart from golf burbling on TV, no music, newish, friendly, rather cluttered layout and very comfortable sofas. After this, the original aim of the excursion - to see Jurassic Park - was abandoned due to general grottiness both of the cinema and of the long queues of adolescents outside so instead walked up and down the High Street 3 times to find food: "FLYING HORSE" (Whitbread), Dover Street - Cask Ale Festival but special food deal not available until 7:00; "CITY ARMS" - no food, smoky; "OLD LOCOMOTIVE" - no food and horrible, a typical railway pub - "THREE COMPASSES" - barman on phone, hiding upstairs, doing everything except serving - "BISHOPS FINGER" - normally serving food, but today the beef was too hot; "UNICORN" - no food after 1:45; all rejected. After an hour of walking around, finally went back to the "FLYING HORSE" where by now they were serving food; excellent value filling meals and 2 pints Higsons had. Canterbury by this time having been researched to exhaustion, the train was taken back to Ramsgate where 2 pints Longstone were had in the "ARTILLERY ARMS".

733. 16-07-93 FRANCE - DUNKIRK / KENT - RAMSGATE: BS; WPR. A short overseas excursion was made on a bright and sunny morning by Sally Line ferry to Dunkirk where, all of the shops being shut, lemonade and ice creams were purchased at a petrol station and consumed in an adjacent open air modern sculpture museum. After a visit to an aquarium it started to pour so a bar was found and two half litres Kronenbourg consumed while wondering why French people did not use umbrellas. A Cantuarian search for food was finally rewarded and a fine meal with copious Bordeaux enjoyed. The return journey was notable only for hundreds of schoolgirls rushing around not closing doors. The Inspection was concluded with a final pint in the "BEDFORD INN" where a large dog was present and a customer was noticed having difficulty balancing on his bar stool.

734. 17-07-93 DERBY: Anth; COB, WPR. Drove to Derby. COB driving, WPR sleeping through "Loaded" by VU. Stopped for food in Shepstead. After food continued on route. Stopped in Shadlow at "HOSKINS WHARF" and had pint of Hoskins in canal side pub. Small pleasant Real Ale pub with 7 or 8 Real Ales. Attempted Guardian crossword. After beer continued to Derby. Could not get into International Hotel, eventually got rooms in European Inn, near Derby Station. Horrible modern and impersonal place, but clean and a roof over our heads. On way to Beer Festival, stopped off for a beer in the "BRUNSWICK". This was made up of 3 old railway houses made into a pub. This pub had recently turned itself into a brewery and also sold other Real Ales. WPR experienced culture shock. Everyone 6 feet tall and 7 feet wide. COB had First Brew, WPR had Recession Ale and Anth had Railway Porter. Women all sported tattoos. COB managed to get his order in eventually when barmaid yelled "Shaddap!" at other customers. Walked into Derby centre so that WPR could use a cashpoint. Then went to an Indian Balti Restaurant, where the waiter threw the WPR's meal at him. Waiter needing practice, he missed. WPR had skilfully made the waiter miss by remaining completely still. Meal carefully scooped up off carpet and served up again. Had a drink in "FLAMINGO AND FIRKIN", despite warnings about the quality of the beer by Anth; awful. After eventually finishing the half of Flamingo Ale, members went to the Assembly Rooms where the Derby Beer Festival was taking place, and joined the queue. After 15 minutes of no movement, they moved on to the "COMPTON ARMS". (Note: Anth was told by the Derby Beer Festival Chairman that no one else was let in until 10:00 pm). The beer as usual was excellent. The pub was studenty but the jukebox was late 70's in content. The WPR did not want to leave, but eventually he was persuaded. The next port of call was the "ALEXANDRA HOTEL", near the Railway Station. This pub was a Bateman's house, but had been bought by the landlord and had become a Real Ale connoisseur's pub. While still selling excellent Bateman's beers (especially the Mild), it also had 2 or 3 other Real Ales on. It was noted to pride itself on the number of different ales that is sold in one year. In the lounge, Anth, the WPR and COB sat under a plaque announcing that the Derby branch of CAMRA was set up there. After this excellent pub, members moved round to visit the "BRUNSWICK" again, but as this was packed, they moved on to the "VICTORIA", where, along with a good pint of Bass, a band was playing. The WPR and COB started to drink halves but the WPR liked the band. Finally they retired to the hotel for their beauty sleep, of which they needed plenty.

735. 18-07-93 DERBY: Anth; COB, WPR. After booking out of their hotel, members wandered into Derby city centre, to a public house next to the Cathedral. "THE DOLPHIN" was noted to be the oldest public house in Derby, and on Sunday morning members were able to get breakfast. After a leisurely breakfast and a walk along the Derwent, members made it to the point of the meeting. They entered the Assembly Rooms and tasted the delights of the Derby Beer Festival. As the WPR had volunteered to drive, he did not drink, but the COB and Anth tested a couple of the remaining ales (most had sold out the night before). They then returned to the car, and drove around the Peak District for the afternoon, the WPR following a trail that he thought led through the Peaks, but which just showed members some pleasant countryside and went round in a circle. Members then regretfully returned to London.

736. 21-07-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS, WPR, Paul, Simon [2nd]. An unconstitutional meeting which became even less constitutional when the WPR left early.

737. 27-07-93 LONDON - STRATFORD: SOS, COB, WPR. The long awaited East End meeting started in the "KING EDWARD VII", formerly the "KING OF PRUSSIA", a comfortable pub with 3 bars. Fullers Pride and Highgate Mild had; the COB noted the prevalence of punk music and the WPR noted a moosehead advertising an eponymous beer. The SOS then guided the party to the nearby "GOLDENGROVE", the latest addition to the Wetherspoons chain. Completely standard, with large food area; lack of seating although not crowded, so sat on high stools. The SOS produced a large number of booklets depicting East London old and not quite so old. On the way out the SOS nearly lost all his books but then led the party on a short number 25 bus ride to the "Ronak", previously visited by him and the WPR. Dustbins still prominent; also array of pictures at jaunty angles. A very tasty vegetarian meal, without any green vegetables at all, was had by ordering one of everything. A final drink being required, the "LIVE AND LET LIVE" was inspected but turned down as the good bar was "closed". The SOS commented on the lack of racial mixture and contrasted it with the "PRINCESS ALICE", where 2 pints Youngs and 2 Glenfiddichs were had. The beer was off but was replaced willingly by a very sympathetic barmaid.

738. 28-07-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS [quizmaster] / Nick, GR, Tim [1st equal] / WPR, COB, Phil [1st equal]. The BS delivered a quiz with questions all relating to dates and events in July, in honour of his recent birthday. Quiz rated the hardest yet but teams managed creditable scores and won vouchers for 12 pints, most of which were saved for the following week. Apologies received from Rick who was busy rehearsing with a hip-hop funk and soul band. The GR revealed that he was an advisor to the Wetherspoons organisation, and appeared to want to distance himself from SLBS activities. Tim, on expressing an interest in Society membership, delivered an appropriate manifesto closely followed by a number of pints, and was duly elected.

739. 01-08-93 LONDON - ALEXANDRA PALACE / HIGHGATE: WPR; BS. A lunch time visit was paid to the "PHOENIX" Bar, Ally Pally. 2 pints of Crouch Vale Pterodact Ale. Sat outside in sun/cloud/sun/cloud. BS discussed BBC politics and cancellation of Doctor Who special, amongst other things. Observed wonderful view of east/south/west London, and discussed relative location of various locations. Strolled around outside of Ally Pally with brief, chilly visit to ice rink. Returned to "PHOENIX" for 2 pints of Crouch Vale IPA followed by 1.5 pints of London Pride. Observed antics of various members of the latest generation of human beings. Proceeded to "Fleet Tandoori 2" for buffet meal. WPR failed to observe plank of wood and fell into restaurant. Visit to Highgate Wood and examination of derelict railway line. After a short adjournment, the evening session was initiated in the "GATE HOUSE" in Highgate village. Derelict pub converted in to a Wetherspoons - typical style with pictures depicting the local area in bygone times. 2 pints of Hadrian Centurion (cloudy) had in the pretty Beer Garden, followed by 2 pints Wadworth 6X indoors. Very long trip from Non-Smoking area to Gents (Ladies very close). Very long bar. Pub so like others in the chain that both members became disoriented on leaving: the WPR thinking he was in Leicester Square, and the BS in North Finchley.

740. 03-08-93 LONDON NW1 - CAMDEN TOWN: COB; SAR, N, Sec, BS, SOS; Bank auditor from Brazil. A solidly constitutional First Tuesday gathering. The WPR was praised for his efforts re: the Minutes. Cleanliness controls observed in Gents toilets as the 9pm check took place.

741. 04-08-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: WPR, Sec, Phil [1st] / Paul, BS, Simon. The WPR's team scored another 26 points in a closer contest. The other team just missed the prizes, coming 4th with 22 points.

742. 06-08-93 LONDON - OLYMPIA: WPR, BS; COB. Great British Beer Festival. Several brews tried. WPR rejoined CAMRA and gained vouchers for beer up to 1050 OG, prompting search for best value. BS uncharacteristically uncompetitive regarding games and sideshows. COB arrived later, and did not do the occasion justice, perhaps in anticipation of his journey to Boston Mass the following day. Food: O'Hagans sausages (expensive), Vegetarian chili burger (boiled sawdust).

743. 07-08-93 SUSSEX - KIRDFORD/BALL'S CROSS / LONDON - CROYDON: SAR; N, Sec, GR. Members assembled at the former's residence before driving down to Sussex in the latter's car, where the SAR resumed his interrupted-since-1987 King and Barnes "Ale Trail" researches at the "FORRESTER'S ARMS", Kirdford. Pleasantly situated in village green, with huge flower baskets almost preventing entry to bar. Cryptic notice outside offering "Roof space available cheep - swifts have flown". Commendable apart from dreary sandwiches. "THE STAG", Ball's Cross. Very Rustic location in woodland hamlet. Very "domestic" looking eating area; interesting cabinets of miniature pottery and suspicious-looking seafood in jars to be found in bar. Outside conveniences, with sign to Gents apparently pointing across road into a clump of bushes. The party then proceeded via Petworth House and Park (the SAR's hundredth National Trust property visited), remaining for afternoon tea and cakes before returning to London, at which a digression was made in the interests of the GR's professional researches to "THE GEORGE", Croydon; enormous Wetherspoons pub, with very long bar, particularly large second-hand book collection, striking blue ceiling; general tone a modern version of a Victorian "gin palace". Theakston's XB had.

744. 13-08-93 LONDON - PRIMROSE HILL: WPR; SOS. Drinks outside the "MAN IN THE MOON". The SOS, who had just completed a long canal walk, was quizzed by the WPR on current and predicted national population figures. A long-planned Polish meal was then had in the "Primrose Brasserie", where large quantities of salad and meat were washed down with an Australian Shiraz selected by the SOS. A mad accordionist played. The chairs would not tuck under the tables, making the restaurant impossible to cross for customers and staff alike.

745. 14-08-93 LOTHIAN - EDINBURGH: COB; WPR. Weather: wet. "WORLD'S END". "Wow Show" (18/20). "QUEEN'S ARMS".

746. 15-08-93 LOTHIAN - EDINBURGH: COB; WPR. Weather: very sunny. "It takes Forever if you go by Inertia", by "Irrational Geographic Society" (8/20). "Temporary Girl" by Lisa Kotin (16/20). "Pleasance Comedy Zone", featuring Boothby Graffoe, Woody Bop Muddy, Matthey Hardy, Mr. Buckstead (9/20).

During the stay, the following traditional objects and activities were observed: Haggis, Kilts, Bagpipes, World's End, Walking out of shows, Filmhouse Bar, Bus, Taxi, Steps, Rain, Music, Rose Street Brewery, Procession, Students, Scottish language, Fire eaters, Jugglers, Cabaret, 80/-, Drinking out of (English) hours, Dithering, Calton Hill, Leaflets, Scotsman Newspaper, Assembly Rooms, Fringe Office queue, Act with video, Bad comedy, Celebrities. The following were not: Jazz, Crossword on train, Car trip to highlands, Long walk out of town, Assembly Rooms supper bar.

749. 18.08.93 LONDON W1 - ROSE & CROWN QUIZ: BS, Sec, Oracle, Phil, Paul & Fiona, Simon. BS was giving quiz. Phil won. Simon was 2nd.

750. 20-08-93 LONDON - NORBURY: SAR & N; BS, GR; Selma, Phyllis & Tony. There was a limited turnout of Members to this uncharted region of South London. The meeting took place in the "MOON UNDER WATER", another Wetherspoons establishment. This was of interest to the GR who was advising the director of the Wetherspoon Organisation on geographical strategy. The procedure for ordering food and its subsequent delivery to the patron's table was found to be defective and unnecessarily bureaucratic in the following respects: (a) the patron's receipt was torn in half for no reason; (b) the patron was expected to know which "zone" he was sitting in, although this information was not readily available; (c) the barmaid who took the order was masquerading under the user-id of Gregg.

751. 27-08-93 LONDON - TOOTING: SAR & N; WPR, Sec, BS; Enilda, Ana & Tony, sundry persons from USA, Australia and Norway. The meeting took place in "J.J. MOONS". A local singing contingent was in good voice and did some requests for the USA/Australia contingent. After the meeting the WPR challenged the SAR to a contest involving 1970's music, which the WPR won 20-16.

752. 28-08-93 SURREY - WOKING/WITLEY: SAR & N; WPR. The WPR was inveigled into accompanying the SAR & N to the Witley Common Information Centre (NT). On the way there a halt was made at the "OLD STILLAGE" in Woking while waiting for a train. Breakspear's was had in a quiet, dark atmosphere. A further halt ensued at the "STAR" in Witley where Friary Meux Best and Lunch were had. This venue was visited again on the way back to Milford Station.

753. 01-09-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: BS, Paul, Fiona [2nd] / Sec, Ryan, Oracle [3rd]

754. 04-09-93 SPAIN: LA GRANJA/SEGOVIA: SAR; WPR. It was decided that some field work in Spain was necessary. The SAR conducted the WPR to the Palacio Real de la Granja de San Ildefonso. Before that they had a leisurely lunch, including Wine, at "LA TERRAZA". On the way back sightseeing in Segovia took place and a stop was made at the bar "EL OJO" in Plaza San Martin, where a minimalist samba school passed and vegetable sandwiches and Beer were had.

755. 05-09-93 SPAIN: TOLEDO: SAR; WPR. A cultural visit to Toledo included a non-Bacchanalian lunch followed by a beer at the bar "LOS MONTEROS" outside the San Ildefonso church.

756. 05-09-93 SPAIN: MADRID: EAR; WPR, SAR; (E)Rick. San Miguel Beer was consumed in the Eurobuilding Apartments, then Tim led the party to the "CASA PANIZA" where Aguila beer and Chorizos were consumed. This was a typical bar where patrons stand up and throw everything they don't eat on the floor. There was considerable discussion about football.

757. 06-09-93 SPAIN: MADRID: SAR; WPR; EAR, (E)Rick, Phil, Douglas. The WPR was summoned to the "MULTICENTRO" (basement) next to Lloyds Bank where two rounds were had in the company of two ageing expatriate executives of that organisation. The WPR found them to be archaic, lecherous and racist.

758. 07-09-93 SPAIN: MADRID: WPR; SAR. Members strolled down the road to the "CAFE REST. PERON" on Av. General Peron. Aguila Damm, tortillas and a bocadillo de chorizo were consumed. The barman discussed the English role in Portuguese Colonialism with the SAR, and appeared to get so carried away with this topic that he undercharged the party for their beer.

759. 07-09-93 LONDON NW1 - CAMDEN TOWN: Sec; BS, COB, Ryan. First Tuesday meeting in "MAN IN THE MOON". Theakstons, Old Speckled Hen and food consumed.

760. 08-09-93 SPAIN: MADRID: WPR; SAR. The WPR conducted the SAR on an investigation of the gay scene in Madrid. Investigation of numerous establishments suggested this scene either had not started yet or did not exist, however Beer was purloined in "CAFE FIGUEROA" (Augusto Figueroa y Hortaleza), "LOS GALDOS" (Perez Galdos y Fuencarral), and "LORD BYRON" in Calle Recoletos (which was confused with Paseo de los Recoletos). The latter was almost empty, with generous tapas spread along the bar and a large amount of statuary. Members left to meet the BS and Nadir at the Airport Bus Station in Plaza Coln.

761. 09-09-93 SPAIN: MADRID: SAR & N; WPR, BS. The SAR conducted members around various aspects of Madrid's bacchanalian offerings. The meeting started in the "MULTICENTRO" where the same people were seen plus Juan. The party then moved off to the "CERVECARIA SANTA BARBARA" where a small amount of Mahou beer was had, standing up. Members moved on towards the old part of the city and "LOS GABRIELES", with its tiled ambiances. Beer was had, and some brandy was had by Nadir and finished by the rest of the party, resulting in greater merriment. Members then continued by way of the Plaza Mayor to the "MESON DE LAS TORTILLAS", a cavernous venue, where as the name suggests, omelettes were had. Certain typically Spanish aspects of the venue were noted; the singing of "Y Viva Espaa" and "The Birdie Song", and pictures of Yogi Bear and the Flintstones on the wall.

762. 10-09-93 SPAIN: MADRID: SAR & N; WPR, BS; EAR, (E)Rick. A rather jaded party managed to get as far as "ECHO CHARLIE'S" near the apartments. The BS was surprised to find a "Dr. Who" Pinball machine there. The meeting started outside but moved in, mainly because the WPR and the BS insisted on wearing T-shirts in increasingly autumnal conditions.

763. 11-09-93 SPAIN: EL ESCORIAL: SAR & N; WPR, BS. Members arrived in time for a leisurely lunch at "EL PARQUE" in view of the Palace. The BS was attacked by a rogue umbrella. The party only just caught the 15.15 bus to Valle de los Caidos, then returned to El Escorial. On the way back to the station beer was had in the "BAR CASITA DEL PRINCIPE", and in the "STATION BAR" itself.

764. 12-09-93 SPAIN: MADRID (EL PARDO): SAR & N; WPR, BS. The SAR & N visited the palace of El Pardo (where General Franco once lived) while the WPR and BS sunned themselves in the garden; the BS was apprehended by a policeman on a scooter for removing his shirt. After a quick turn on Dodgem Cars by the BS and SAR, the party had Lunch, consisting of Lomo, Egg and Chips, with Beer, outside at the "BAR CHAVES" which was in a narrow street which became an intermittent wind tunnel. On return to the centre of Madrid the party went up the Moncloa Light Tower, which was swaying in the wind. On return to the Eurobuilding Apartments, the remaining beer and wine there was consumed; the WPR and the BS returned to England the next day and SLBS research therefore ceased.

765. 14-09-93 LONDON - KENSINGTON: WPR; COB. After a nutty meal provided by the COB, he and the WPR paid a visit to the no smoking bar of the "BRITANNIA" (Youngs).

766. 15-09-93 ROSE AND CROWN QUIZ: Paul, Fiona, Simon [1st] / Sec, BS, Enilda, Oracle [2nd]. Rest of pub full of holidaying Italians, so little serious competition.

767. 18-09-93 LONDON - WEST END: COB; BS, Ryan, Anth. A cinematic evening in the "Lumiere" was preceded by drinks in the "MOON UNDER WATER".

768. 24-09-93 LONDON NW1 - CAMDEN TOWN: WPR; COB. Apologies for absence received from Anth (had argument with bus driver). The COB and WPR met in the "SPREAD EAGLE" (Youngs); more crowded than expected, so researched High Street, where ex-colleague of COB was spotted but not confronted. The "WHEATSHEAF" (Courage) : large, empty, dingy, dirty. Cheap beer. The "SOUTHAMPTON": Large, noisy, smoky. COB trounced WPR at table football. London Pride had.

769. 02-10-93 LONDON - BETHNAL GREEN: COB; WPR; Sozen, Jean (from France). A cinematic afternoon was spent viewing "Orlando" in the Rio Cinema in Kingsland High Street. An exciting car journey was made to "Pumpkins", a vegetarian restaurant with a notoriously rude waiter, where a number of nut roasts, teas and cakes were consumed over a period of several hours. The object of the Society was upheld when the party moved on to the "CAMDEN HEAD", a standard Wetherspoons pub, where members had 6X.

770. 03-10-93 LONDON - DAGENHAM: Paul Peter; SAR & N, BS, Enilda, Paul & Claudete, Cecilia & Francois etc. The youngest ever Convener of an SLBS meeting (see minutes around 30-12-92) leapt into action again to celebrate his first birthday. Well wishers from as far afield as St. Petersburg, the Philippines and Bromley were present, not to mention the Brazilians and Ulstermen, from whom he is descended. He laid on a generous supply of Hofmeister Lager for his guests, who were all at least 18 years older than he. Champagne was also popped open to accompany the cake.

771. 05-10-93 LONDON NW1 - CAMDEN TOWN: SAR & N, WPR, COB, BS, Sec. Traditional first Tuesday meeting in the "MAN IN THE MOON" at Chalk Farm. The BS regaled members with photos of Spanish field events and the Dr. Who convention. 773. 16-10-93 EAST SUSSEX / SURREY - BRIGHTON / OUTWOOD: COB; WPR. "HAND IN HAND" (Kempton), Upper St. James Street. Decor defies description. Particularly smoky. 776. 22-10-93 LONDON NW1 - CAMDEN TOWN: WPR; Sec, GR, BS, COB. A return visit to the "MAN IN THE MOON" for several pints of Flotation Ale (4.5%) and very good value Flotation Pie. A prize draw was held, in which members were unsuccessful.

778. 30-10-93 LONDON - BELGRAVIA: COB; WPR. "STAR", Belgrave Mews West.

779. 31-10-93 KENT - MILTON REGIS: Sec; GR. A probably unprecedented event in the Society's history, at which 10 pubs were visited, but only one drunk in. The GR arrived belatedly at the Sec's residence after suffering a surfeit of roundabouts, and proceeded by car to Faversham. Despite being Kent's brewing capital, 6 pubs were visited and found wanting in both food and hospitality (all Shepherd Neame), being largely occupied by small groups of surly / already intoxicated locals, with a strong atmosphere of criminality. At the "SHIP", members were told tersely that there was no food, despite a very large and visible adjacent buffet. In desperation, a tea-room was investigated, but despite being open, no staff appeared for 10 minutes, and members (resisting the temptation to steal all the cakes on the counter) proceeded to Teynham. The "GEORGE" and "SWAN" were both inspected, the former being particularly seedy and full of off-duty football hooligans; at the latter, sandwiches were grudgingly offered "eventually" by the surly landlord, by the GR decided that eventually was too long and the expedition continued to Sittingbourne, where a similar experience was had at the "BELL". A drink was finally had at the "THREE HATS", Milton Regis; a very rough industrial local, which reminded members of bars in Stoke-on-Trent / Wolverhampton, with very uncouth prize draw going on, couple on next table pouring a half-pint down their 2-year old's throat etc. Youngs Special on offer, though when asked for, barmaid replied "did you want pints of Youngs or Special?". Proceedings continued with a drive around the Isle of Sheppey, Isle of Grain and Hoo Peninsula in increasingly tenebrous conditions, before returning to the Sec's residence for tea.

780. 02-11-93 LONDON - WEST END: COB; WPR. "MOON UNDER WATER". Poetry - Nuff Said Club.

784. 12-11-93 LONDON WEST KENSINGTON / SOUTH BANK: COB; WPR. Met in "THREE KINGS", West Kensington. Then "HOLE IN THE WALL", Waterloo, followed by "NATIONAL FILM THEATRE BAR". Film - "Fly me to a Star". COB met Sozen and other friends.

13-11-93 LONDON - SOUTH BANK: BS; others. It is conjectured that a meeting took place in the "FOUNDERS ARMS", and that members watched the Lord Mayors Show fireworks.

788. 27-11-93 LONDON - WEST END: BS & Enilda; WPR, COB, Sec, GR, SAR, N, Oracle, Paul, Tim, Ryan; Others including Phil, Fiona, Sozen, Sue. Engagement Party for BS and Enilda, held in "ROSE AND CROWN".

790. 04-12-93 LONDON - STRATFORD: WPR; BS. The Pig's Ear Beer festival was attended by members but not by the SOS despite his earlier interest in the event. More beers were later taken in the "EDWARD" nearby.
