Advanced Tactics
-Irradiating Friendly Units - Tanks are no match for a crowd of lings. What you can do is irradiate your tank. It won't hurt it but it will hurt the attacking zerglings. They just blow up as they try to attack your tank. Put defense matrix on it as well for an even greater effect. Other units may be irradiated too. Make sure your infantry are not standing next to the tank. When you see a group of guards, you may not be able to irradiate them all especially if they are spread out. Instead, you can irradiate another vessel you have and fly into them. The irradiate will not wear off for a long time and you can irradiate distant guards for a faster effect. You can irradiate your vessel and fly it into a group of attacking hydras. They will be busy hitting your army and you can pop them like balloons.
-Drone Molestation: An early vulture drop rush - Upgrade spider mines for your vultures and pack 4 into a dropship. Drop the vultures behind the minerals of the victim. This works best if they are zerg or protoss since the drones are weaker. Place mines at the edges of the mineral patches to kill any incoming zerglings and zealots. If the forces are overwhelming, put them back into the dropship and drop them off on the other side of them minerals where there are no forces. If they finally catch on and put forces on both sides, fly to another part of the base and start harassing the buildings.
-Turrent/Cannon Breaking with wraiths - Normally you fly away from turrents and cannons. Still, if there are a small number like 3, matrix a wraith and send it in to attack. The turrents will target the wraith and keep attacking it. Then, send in the rest of your wraiths, unmatrixed. They won't be targeted and will be free to destroy the turrents.
-Tank on ledge - In most maps, take BGH for example bases have a small cliff behind the minerals. You can place tanks on here and it is very difficult to kill them. Put 2 tanks into a dropship and put them on the ledge. It's best to bring along 1 or 2 vessels to matrix the tanks. Target the thing manually. Kill any units you see before they can reach the tanks. This is great players that have no air units.
-Nuking - Finally, the ultimate defense breaker. This requires more skill than it looks. A non skillful nuker will have his ghost repeatedly killed. First of all, never send in a lone ghost. Second, you need the extra sight range. Cloaking is optional. Surprised? You need to set up before you nuke. Let's take the newbie terran defense. It seems impossible to break through. Here's what you do though. Siege tanks at a distance so it can't hurt the defense. Put a vessel in front of the tanks so it can see further ahead. Make sure you have marines and goliath as support. Have the ghost target the nuke in front of where the defense is. Make sure you are out of range of tanks. Then, quickly take at least 3 vessels and cover the ghost so you can't see it. More importantly, so you can't click on it. The ghost will be out of range of tanks and any wraiths that try to kill the ghost will not be able to target it since the vessels are in the way. Goliath will further annoy the wraiths. When you see the nuke dropping, unsiege the tanks and get ready to run in.
In the picture, a ghost is about to nuke. The science vessels have been highlighted and I was right-clicking it on the ghost so the vessels would cover the ghost. Notice the tanks and the marines protecting the ghost. The marines move up as soon as the ghost has been safely hidden. The vessels are placed on halt so they don't move when hit.
-Tanking Cliffs - One of terran's advantages is it has the unit with the longest range. Tanks can hit from extremely far away. Basically, you can shoot across rivers and over cliffs. Here is a picture form the lost temple map. Terran is attacking by sieging from outside the enemy base. Blue can do very little to counter with all the support that orange has. Not shown are more goliaths and vessels to the left. The only real way you can counter is to use siege tanks also. You will need to matrix them so they don't get blown up. This applies to both orange a blue. You have to watch out when attacking like this. If they run around to attack your main, you may be in trouble. Take out some important buildings if you can, then move to the front. You can use dropships to bring units into the base as the buildings are destroyed. On the left most tank, you can see a shadow of a dropship ready to bring in units. Protoss can easily web the tanks and use goons to attack. Terran and zerg have more trouble. Zerg can spawn and terran will have to use siege tanks also. If the game is still early and you don't have vessels yet, you can fly in an engineering bay.
