Building Positioning
Building Positioning is very important to the economy of your game. If you put a barrack and supply depot in front of your bunker, zealots and zerglings will have lots of trouble attacking it. Usually, they die or become heavily damaged by the time they reach it. You also need to place your bunker next to your command center or the lings and zealots will run past it and head straight for the mining. There are many ways to build and you can get creative. The worst thing you can do is spread out your buildings all over the place in your base. This makes it very easy for an opponent to attack you. Buildings close together are easier to defend.
Don't make walls. I see people make a long row of pylons in their base and then make a long row of gateways. When I drop hydras in the minerals, their units take too long to run all the way around the wall and heavy damage is dealt by the time they can begin to stop the attack. Some people make huge supply depot clusters. This may be 12 depots crowded together in a 3 x 4 box to save space. A nuke will destroy all of them at once. Tanks will do more splash when they attack. I make my supply depots in small clusters of 4's. I may put depots at the edges of my base to make use of good space. Make sure you leave enough space for your units to move around freely and enough space to build more things. Don't overdo it by making large clusters that can easily be destroyed or block your way.
Put unit producing buildings like barracks in the front of your base and things like the academy in the back. When attacking, kill important buildings like the hydra den or the cybernetics core first to prevent more of those units from attacking you. Put detection throughout your base, not just the entrance and the edges. The most important places are at the entrance and behind the minerals.
