Scouting

Scouting so extremely important. It lets you know what your opponent is doing so you can prepare for what comes. Most people don't scout enough. Some don't scout at all.

The very basic scouting is finding out where your enemy is. Most people just look for the enemy and then never bother to come back. What you should be doing is constantly stopping at their base to check what they have. If you see 1 gateway and a core, there's a possibility he will go fast goons or dt's. If you come back maybe 30 seconds later and see a citadel, you can safely believe they are going dts. Now, you have plenty of time to build detection. To set waypoints, highlight a unit. Then, hold shift and righ-click on multiple places on your screen. Your unit will move to the places that you click in the order you clicked them. You can click on the mini map instead. Now you won't "forget" to scout. Below are how and what to scout with for all 3 races.

General Scouting
-Scout early. Use a miner to scout. Even when you are zerg, you should send out a drone. Overlords are really too slow and they can have a lot done by the time your overlord reaches their base, especially if you scouted in the wrong direction.
-Place units in front of an enemy base. Use a miner or a ling. Doing this will tell you when you enemy attacks you. Don't let them see it though. You don't want them to kill it.
-After scouting with the miner, keep it right outside their base or if their base is big, you can keep it inside. Wait a little while, and then check up on them. The things to look for are: gas, core, lair, factory. The next things you want to check out is how many units they have. Finally, know if they blocked their front. If they block it, you can just walk in anymore but well, what could you do?
-With your army in your base, put one lone warrior outside where the enemy must pass before entering. This gives you maybe a 5 second warning to make last second preparations, like stim or get storm ready. -Periodically, you need to scout for expansions. Just send a miner or whatever to look through every base that your opponent didn't start in.

Terran
You should scout with your 9th scv. You might think it is better to scout with a marine and save your scvs for mining but it isn't. The main Terran scouting unit is the vulture. With the speed upgrade, it can easily cover the whole map in seconds. Place mines in expansion slots to see when they expand.

Zerg
Scout with the overlord first. Scout whichever base is closest first. After you get your 2nd hatch, send a ling or drone to scout. Research burrow and burrow lings all over the place. When you burrow, don't do it right under where your enemy will build. You want to let them build an expansion, then once it's done, destroy it. If they can't build onto a spot, they will know there is a burrowed unit. Instead of burrowing lings, you can set fast overlords on patrol. But if you do this, they will kill your ol before they expand.

Protoss
Scout with the probe you build your first pylon with. The toss scouting unit is the observer. Research speed and range for best results. Observers have a huge site and a few can easily monitor the whole map. Put some on patrol to monitor expansions.
