Upgrading
Upgrades make your units stronger. How much stronger they get is a measure of percentage, not numbers. Marines don't just do 1 more damage when they get a rifle upgrade, they do 16.6% more damage. This means they can kill an enemy 16.6 times as fast. Rifles at level 3 do 9 damage, totaling a 50% increase in damage. This is the second highest increase in damage of other units. The highest is the melee attack for zerglings totaling 60%. A hydra gains a mere 30% increase at level 3. Upgraded marines will whoop hydras, providing you have medics. Hydras do have a life advantage.
Armor upgrades are slightly different for calculation. Damage will be absorbed depending on what attacks it. If a tank has 2 armor, it absorb 2 damage from a marine's fire. However, if 2 marines hit it at the exact same time, only 2 damage will be absorbed. So basically, armor will absorb damage from each point it is attacked, not each time a unit attacks it. Carriers with level 3 armor has a total of 5 armor. Cosairs can still kill it even though they do 5 damage. With all this in mind, armor upgrade is most beneficial to units that have a higher HP. The unit with more HP will absorb a total of more damage than a unit with less HP. Using a tank as an example, a weapon upgrade adds 5 damage to the seige attack and armor adds 1 to it. The damage is a pathetically small increase while the armor will be very beneficial to the tank's 150 HP. I always upgrade vehicle plating to level 1 before I upgrade weapons. As for the big units like battlecruisiers and ultralisks with an enormous HP, an additional point of armor is a much longer survival time in attacks. Armor upgrades are less effective on protoss since about half of their HP is shields.
