Offense
Your offense may be grouped into 2 places. Main and Support. Main units are the ones that you would use to do the most damage. They always stand in the front lines no matter what. Usually, they have shorter range.
Support units are the ones in the back. They have longer range, usually do more damage, and usually shoot slower. Even if there are some units that aren't attacking like marines guarding tanks in a tank push... both are placed in one of the 2 categories.
Now, the hard part is deciding which unit is which. Support units are slow and clumsy. They require help and protection of the main units. If cosairs and carriers attack someone it may be hard to decide which is the main and support. It is open to opinions and interpretation. If your enemy has an air defense and you kill them with your cosairs, you may say your cosairs are the main units. If you are only killing buildings, you may say your carriers are the main units. No matter what happens, it is beneficial to have at least 2 kinds of attacking units. Carriers can kill spore colonies while cosairs take out the mutas. Conversely, cosairs can web a group a hydras while carriers kill them.
Now, we focus on range. If you have a group of goons, they will all have the same range (obviously). If you attack a newbie that only builds goons, you are even. On average, they units will die goon for goon. They will stand at a determined range and shoot. Additional goons you have will stay in the back and do nothing. Until the ones in front of it dies or moves forward, the goons in the back are idle. If you have zealots however, both of them can attack the enemy at the same time. The zealot does not stand in the back doing nothing. This works the same with firebats and marines. Usually, the computer AI will make your units kill the main attackers first or the ones closer to you. This is done while they get slaughtered by the support units. All advanced units are support units. They don't attack and they stand in the back until it's their turn to do their thing. It is advantageous to have the support and main units. You will see a very noticeable difference when you do this.
The different types of ranges battling each other will be discussed in the "micro" section.
