Defense
Only a newbie's defense consists of buildings. This include cannons, bunkers, supply depots, sunkens. For all these given, a newbie zerg defense is the easiest to kill. Then comes protoss and finally the hardest is terran. Surprisingly, no matter how well these defenses are built, they are just crap. The best defender is not terran but protoss. Not one cannon is needed. In fact, it is better to not use cannons because they just block you. A small fleet of 12 cosairs will provide enough webbing to cover everything that tries to shoot from a choke. 3 or 4 arbiters can stand guard waiting to use stasis. The best thing about stasis is that they units still take up space. This will make the choke even smaller. Goons, zealots templars, and whatever else you want stand under the air units. My friend was almost crushed one time and was left with one hatch and one drone. Using this defense, the opponent just couldn't get through no matter what he tried. He mass hydraed. Had I just used cannons, he would have gotten through very easily.
The only real defense you need is from cloaked units. 6 cannons or turrents that are well placed is enough to protect your whole base until you get the air detection units like vessels or observers. Sunkens are almost a must for zerg. Zerglings just don't do too well by themselves against marines and hydras don't come fast enough. 1 or 2 colonies next to the main hatchery is usually sufficient.
Your building defenses should be made around the mining area. Only for terran do you actually need defense in the front of the base. More on this in the terran defense section. Better said is your offense is your defense. It's easier to kill buildings that don't move than units that can move.
Suppose there is an impenetrable defense and yes, an expert can do that. It would probably be with protoss. Stasis and web together will make a choke impossible to penetrate. It's unlikely you can get around it. What should you do? The answer is easy. Just go around. Why break in the front door when you can just break in through a window?
