G.U.T.'s (Grand Unified Theories)
(VERIFY THE STATEMENTS ABOUT UNIFICATION)**********
The present attempts at the GUT's (Grand, Unified Theories) involving the four basic (known) forces of nature, use gravitons as the "missing link".
The electromagnetic forces have successfully been described using the theory of quantum electrodynamics, or QED. The strong force was unified to the electromagnetic force using a theory of quantum chromodynamics, termed QCD. The term itself does not describe real colors, but arbitrary designations or labels pinned (figuratively) on quarks.
The weak nuclear force was the next candidate for unification. The strong and the electromagnetic force had already been linked up. The proposed solution would involve a theory claiming the exchange of massive particles called intermediate vector bosons. Recent attempts have seemed to be successful uniting this force, resulting in the Electro-weak force theory.
With this success under their collective belts, physicists are rushing forward to propose some type of all inclusive theory of Everything, in which gravitons are assumed to be the last missing particles.
Probably the best current candidate of the proposed theories would be Superstrings. See the section in Chapter **, or see the Extended Definitions section on superstrings to review the merits of this theory.
