| One last view of the hull before it is primered and painted. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This picture is with the third coat of primer just applied and still wet. The yellow pump, that was once part of an Kawasaki X2 Jet Ski hull is starting to look right at home in the back of the boat. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Here is a side view. We spent agonizing hours sanding the hull to make it perfect. It is not perfect, but I have only been able to find a few spots that need minor touch up with Epoxy Filler. As miserable of a job as it was to sand, it was worth it.... A BIG thanks to Morgan has he helped with the final coat of sanding. I couldn't take one more minute of it, but he showed up and together we were able to get through it... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Here is a front view looking back. Looks good. I am using an Interlux 2-part epoxy primer. It was difficult to find a product that is recommended for this application, which is very suprising. Most marine paint manufactures are reluctant to recommend their products sit below the waterline for any length of time. Interlux does reccomend this primer for this purpose, although they reccomend 5-6 coats. That wouldn't be so bad, except that you have to mix it and you MUST use their brushing thinner. Don't try to save a nickel and use regular old paint thinner.... Ended up throwing away 12 oz of paint... At $90 per gallon.... it was a painful mistake. The other problem with this primer is the smell. The smell is absolutely rotten.... Even with a breather, the smell was powerful and it stays around... You can see that I masked off the boat as to not paint the entire side. This was done because the deck has not been built of glassed on the boat. I was advised to not apply structural joints with Epoxy over paint/primer. Also, this area is above the waterline and will only require 2 coats of primer.... We are rapidly running out of good weather and I hope to get the bottom of the boat primed and painted before it gets too cold.... |
