Powers: Colossus has the ability to transform his skin into organic metal. In
his metallic form, he is super-strong and mostly invulnerable. He also does not have to
breathe.
Origin: A Russian farmboy in Siberia, Colossus was a working boy with a poet's
soul. His first use of his powers was to save his younger sister from a runaway tractor.
Approached by Professor X, Piotr left his parents, his sister, and the quiet life behind
to become an X-Man.
History: He quickly became the soul of the new team. He grew close to Storm and
Nightcrawler, and soon, the team was joined by their youngest member, Kitty Pryde.
Eventually, the love between Colossus and Kitty grew, and a relationship bloomed.
However, Colossus's life as an X-Man was not an easy one. Arcade would kidnap Illyana,
Colossus's younger sister, and hold her hostage. Colossus freed her, but while she stayed
with Colossus at the X-Men's mansion, she was captured by Belasco, an evil sorcerer and
ruler of Limbo. Before Colossus could save her, illyana had been transformed by Limbo's
magic. She had aged seven years, gained her mutant powers, and a gift for sorcery.
Meanwhile, Colossus would travel to the Secret Wars, and fall in love with Zsaji, an alien
healer. However, the relationship ended when Zsaji sacrificed her life for his. But
Colossus returned, he learned his love for Kitty was not as strong as it once was.
Colossus would have other adventures and romances, including that of one with Ne'reel, a
Savage Land, which gave Colossus a son who is cared for by Ne'reel. Colossus remained with
the X-Men, growing as a hero and an artist.
Eventually, during the Inferno, Magik, as Illyana was now called, would be reverted to a
child. Colossus was there to watch his sister finally come free of the black magic that
had stolen her childhood.
However, Colossus could not spend time with his 'Little Snowflake'. The world believed the
X-Men dead, and Colossus was still an X-Man. When the Reavers attacked their base in
Australia, the X-Men were forced to use the Siege Perilous, the gem given to them by Roma.
When Colossus awoke, he was anmesic. He worked in New York as an artist and apartment
repairman. For the first time, he met Jenny Ransome and Philip Moreau, two refugees from
Genosha. And he was entralled by a beautiful woman. Eventually, Colossus would regain his
memories, and the woman would be revealed as Callisto, the former Morlock leader
transformed by Masque.
The two shared a romance until Colossus returned to the X-Men. However, his life was in
for the biggest change ever. Colossus's parents would be killed by an anti-mutant mob and
the X-Men would help him rescue his older brother from an alternate dimension. Mikhail had
been trapped there by his own mutant powers after an space mission gone wrong.
But Mikhail would turn on him, killing the majority of the Morlocks and taking the others
to another dimension. And then, as if Colossus could fall further apart, Illyana was
becoming ill with the Legacy Virus, a lethal disease designed to kill humans. Illyana's
days were numbered.
Colossus continued to fight, while Kitty Pryde and Professor X watched over his sister.
However, Illyana could not hold onto her life. Colossus was not there when his sister, the
last member of his family, died. Colossus's world was ripped apart, and he turned his back
on Professor X's dream.
Leaving the X-Men, Colossus joined Magneto's Acolytes. Colossus had a few encounters with
the X-Men, and would care for Magneto after Professor X had mind-wiped him. The Acolytes
respected, even liked, the former X-Man. However, Exodus, who had taken command after
Magneto fell, would lead the Acolytes to their destruction.
When Exodus and the evil being Holocaust fought on Avalon, the Acolytes space station
home, it was sent spiraling towards Earth. Helped by Cyclops and Phoenix, most of the
Acolytes, including Colossus survived. He and the helpless Magneto fell into the Arctic.
There, Colossus was helped by Callisto, who had seemed to age faster then Colossus. Then,
with her help, Colossus went back to the X-Men, to help them take down Gene Nation, a
group that, unknown to Colossus, were created by his brother, Mikhail!
Colossus knew that his time as an Acolyte was over, and he went back to the one person he
felt he could trust: Kitty. Colossus joined Excalibur, even though Shadowcat was involved
with Pete Wisdom. Colossus, for the first time since Illyana's death, was happy.
He stayed with Excalibur until it disbanded, and then, with the other former X-Men
Nightcrawler and Shadowcat, rejoined the X-Men. Fighting once more for Professor X's
dream, Colossus's life once again had purpose. Eventually, Storm would find just where
Mikhail, and his Morlock captives, were.
Soon enough, Colossus himself would travel with Marrow to the other dimension called the
Hill. Colossus then knew that Mikhail had been taken control of. Freeing his
brother, Colossus returned him to Earth. However, Mikhail was one of the chosen Twelve,
who were destined to fight Apocalypse to determine the fate of the world. He would die
fighting off Apocalypse.
Colossus remained with the X-Men, lonely, but still fighting for the dream. However,
Mystique, the mutant terroist, destroyed the world by unleashing another Legacy Virus, and
killing Moria Mactaggert, one of Colossus's friends. However, this Virus had the ability
to kill even humans, making it even more dangerous.
The Beast had found a cure, but to release it, someone must die. The others resolved to
wait until another cure could be found, but that was not enough for Colossus. He had lost
his parents, his brother, Kitty was missing, and his sister had died because of this
virus. In the end, Colossus heroically sacrificed his life to save millions of lives
around the world.
Kitty, who had hidden herself from the X-Men, appeared to return Colossus's ashes to his
homeland, the great plains of Siberia. Traveling alone, Kitty thought of her past with
Colossus, her one true love. In the end, Kitty unleashed his ashes in the air over the
farmland that had given birth to Piotr Rasputin, the hero called Colossus.
