Freshmen
Making Chanukah goody bags for freshmen:r
Adie, Jen, Sara, Ariel, Robyn, Christina
Summary:
Its good to reach freshmen as soon as they come on campus.  This year, we kicked off the year with a Freshmen Fiesta (see below) and eventually started a Jewish Freshmen Council, which started with 30 members.  The Jewish Freshmen Council was organized this year by residence halls (i.e. everyone in the same residence hall area worked together).  This helped us plan programs and got the students working together with people who lived near them.  The idea behind this was to have them plan programs that they thought people in their residence halls would come to.  It also was good to have the freshmen reach out to people (by delivering goody bags, etc.) to people who were not very far from them.  By the end of the year, however we averaged 7-10 students per meeting, and we broke off into groups based on interest, not living area.  Perhaps it would be a good idea to have the Jewish Freshmen Council organized in such a way from the beginning because then the students are planning programs and working together with other people with similar interests.  We broke down into community service, outdoors, and social, although by the end, those students who were still on the council helped out with most of the programs anyway.

Strategies for Success/Future Goals of Group:

The key to this group is to get them involved from the beginning.  Also, you want to give them a reason to be involved in the Jewish freshmen council.  For people who dont like planning programs, how can you make them want to be involved-do you see them serving another role?  Also, I would divide the students a couple of ways: first, I think the most important way to group students is by interest.  Then, if there are some who want to help plan stuff with you in the residence halls, thats great!  I would encourage a Jewish Freshmen Council to be formed very early on and to have a clear purpose.  Also, youll need to think how you can transition these students into the greater Hillel student leadership.  Some, youll find, will just do that on their own.

Key Leaders:
The key was to get students involved from the beginning.  Freshmen Robin, Danielle, Michelle, Jessica, Ariel, Sara, Josh, Rubin, Jason, Jess, Adie, Lindsey, Maya, Susie, Marissa, Eli, and Shoshana were all very involved freshmen.  Many of them worked with me on planning programs.  Others worked with other people on planning programs, and some even planned some on their own.
