| Malibu Madness: The Jew in You: This was a Jewish Freshmen Retreat to the Shalom Nature Center in Malibu. It was a Shabbaton where we explored the differences in our Jewish community and began to explore a little about our Jewish self at Shalom Nature Center in Malibu. Upon arrival, we had a welcome circle where we got to know everyone else. Then we went directly into Shabbat services, then dinner, then some free time and a game of Jewpardy, lead by Tobin. Then the evening was for free-time, but many people went on an adventurous hike spontaneously lead by Tobin as well. In the morning of Shabbat, we went to breakfast, did some warm-up activities where we challenged ourselves with questions about ourselves and our Jewish identity. Then we discussed our answers in small groups. Then we were lead by leaders of the Shalom Nature Center at the ropes course. After that was lunch, free-time and an optional nature hike. Dinner was next, then more free-time, then we had a talent campfire at night. Sunday we packed up the vans/cars and then Josh lead us in a closing circle. It was amazing. A lot of time was devoted to follow-up, including sending people pictures and notes, etc. Purim Palooza: The goal of this program was to bring an easy Purim celebration to first year students living in the residence halls, by having a relaxing time where they could meet one another, eat Hamentaschen, have some coffee and learn about the huge, upcoming Purim party at Hillel. Each party was held in three different residence hall areas on campus, the week before Purim. About 60 students came in total to all 3 gatherings! Mishlach Manot Bags: These were bags that included Hamentashen, a gragger and some candy for Purim. Some freshmen helped me hand them out to other freshmen in the residence halls. They are always a bit hit and its a great way for freshmen to meet other students in their residence hall! Chocolate Seders: I held two chocolate seders, in two different residence halls. The goal was to meet new students and also talk up our upcoming Passover seders and Shabbat dinners. There were 15 students at the first one and about 20 students at the second. It definitely helped me meet people who rarely or never come to Hillel programs. Passover Goody Bags: Again, we gave these to the freshmen in their residence halls. We included some Kosher for Passover chips, some candy, gum, and info on the holiday. Much liked by all! Sunday Hikes: As part of the Freshmen Council, we also sponsored some hikes in the area. We generally met at Hillel around noon and then we went to a designated hiking place in the area. Between 4-6 people usually came. Talk to Lindsey, she lead them this year. Beach Bash: A day at the beach, with free pizza, and fun games of Twister, and volleyball, and frisbee. This was sponsored by the Jewish Freshmen Council, but all were invited. About 30 people came in all, despite the gloomy Sunday weather. For programs from August through December, click here. |
