Getting a Life
Its easy to get sucked into the fellowship and forget that you need to have a life tooand the fact that the beach is here does not help.  You would think the beach and nice weather would make it easier to get distracted from work, but noat least not for me.

Anyway, there are plenty of things to do in the Santa Barbara area, and almost every week there is something different going on-either a Fiesta, or a cultural show, or a fair, or a concert-its great!

Making Friends:

I would say that its always great meeting grad students.  I met several at the Jewish grad student programs that I planned.  You could also perhaps put yourself on the grad student listserv at the university.  I met people through attending services at the Isla Vista Minyan and by having roommates.

Newspapers:
The Santa Barbara News Press might be a way of finding out whats going on, however, The Independent is an even better way to find out what you can do, as it includes highlights of the upcoming weekend, including concerts, movies, cultural shows, plays, and much more!  Finally, if you check out The Nexus, the student newspaper at UCSB, you can find out whats happening on campus and other programs that might be more geared towards students.

Farmers Markets/Art Shows:
One of the things I found to be cool about Santa Barbara was the Farmers Markets, where you can buy fresh produce and flowers in season.  For a detailed website of the markets and their dates, click

Sundays Art along the wharf. Local artists of all types (knitting, photography, glass, metals, paintings, etc.) set up their work to sell along the coast every Sunday morning.  Even if youre broke, the art is still really cool to look at.

Planning Your Life Post-Fellowship:
Ive seen many fellows who are so focused on their job that they sometimes forget to make more long-term personal plans, such as grad school, jobs, etc.  I would say that you should consider what your long-term goals are, but also to ask your supervisor to address these personal goals with you during your supervision sessions. Sometimes it helps to have someone else be on your case about these goals when we can put as much pressure on ourselves.
