Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
As a fellow, I am responsible for programming during freshmen orientation, for increasing the number of students registered in our database at the beginning of the year, and overseeing freshmen programming.  During the year, Im the person that would deal with new students.  In general, thats it.  This year I took on more target groups, but that is flexible from year to year.  As a staff member, I am responsible for working with new students, for executing programming to meet the needs of my target groups, for being a good co-worker (on-time, keeping an eye open for the organization, etc.), sometimes answering the phones, other programs that come up like Grandparents Weekend.

Supervision:
I actually enjoy supervision because it normally means that Josh and I are catching up during a set time, which is very nice.  The key to making this work is to be open to learn from one another.  This is the time that is supposed to be set aside for evaluation of past events, planning of future events, discussing challenges and successes and Jewish learning.  Supervision normally lasts one hour, but Josh and I normally end up talking much longer, which is fine with me! Hes great!

Holidays:
In general, it is very flexible when you are working on Jewish holidays.  With that being said, there are many times where you are expected to celebrate a holiday with the community (Passover, High Holidays, etc.), just to help the organization and also so you can get to know students.  I dont think anyone on staff will make you do anything that feels uncomfortable (i.e. working on Shabbat or holidays), and since everyone on staff has different religious practices (Jewish and non-Jewish); this makes it very easy for us as a staff to make compromises.  Its normally okay to take off about one Shabbat a month, but you should bring it up in the staff meetings to make sure someone is covering that Shabbat.

College Campus Initiative:
As a result of being on a team with other fellows from the LA region (including UCSB, UCLA, USC, the Claremont Colleges, Pierce & Valley Colleges, and CSUN), youll also be part of this initiative called the College Campus Initiative (CCI).  Basically, CCI is a way to ensure that Hillel professionals from the LA area are networking to maximize learning from one another, and planning regional programming.  This also means that while other fellow are having conference calls states away from one another, youll be at a restaurant, or on the beach having a meeting in person!  We have two major partner agencies that we work with: the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the LA Jewish Federation, and Shalom Nature Center.  The Director of CCI at the JCRC this year was Lisa Weiss.  She helped us get money to send students to go to Spitzer, and the March for Womens Lives.  Shalom Nature center was where we had our initial team retreat and also a great location to host any retreats for students-just book it ahead of time!  They are also great resources in planning outdoor adventure activities with a Jewish twist!

Jewish Learning:
As a fellow, youre responsible for one hour of Jewish learning per week, as paid time.  This can be anything really-a class, a book-just be sure to talk it over with your supervisor.  This year I had hoped to do Partners in Torah for the Fall quarter, but that didnt work out, so I made up for it during the Winter and Spring Quarters by taking a class with Rabbi Steve two times a week and taking a Hebrew class on campus 4 times per week.  This was also a great way for me to meet new students!
