Contacts:
Each year, Res Life holds a gathering at the beginning of the year with all of the res life staff.  This is a great way to meet Resident Directors and RAs and let them know that you do programming in the residence halls! Be sure to have something to give to them when they come and use the building!

Res Life:

Lisa Slavid from Residential Life is helpful when it comes to scheduling the Jewish Awareness Social at the beginning of the year that is affiliated with the Week of Welcome.  Also, this upcoming year one of our Jewish students Jared Goldschen is the President of the Residence Hall Association (RHA).

Orientation:
Peter Klein is also a Jewish grad student who works in the Orientation Office.  He and Jennifer Holcomb are great people to talk to about scheduling tables at orientation sessions and advertising information in Discovery Days, the newspaper of events that is put out during the first week of school.

Jewish Faculty/Staff:

Marti Levy is another great person to know.  She is on the Hillel Community Board and works with Development of the University.  She is also a co-signer on the account for the Student Boards account with the university.  Youll need her signature if you are scheduling vans or the transferring of account money to cover something on campus.  Richard Hecht is a rabbi, who teaches in the Jewish Studies Department at the university.  Also, Sara Wheeler is the Hebrew professor, who comes to us from Israel.  I have taken a class with her before and she is really cool, plus, Im sure both she and Professor Hecht would be willing to make announcements about upcoming Hillel programs.

Programming Resources on Campus:

The admissions office might be helpful if they collect any information about which students coming to UCSB are Jewish.  The Office of Student Life is a great office, with lots of resources available to student groups, including funding and publicity.  It would be great to get both the Jewish Womens Group and the Jewish Honor Society officially registered with them, as you have more availability to resources on campus as a registered group.  Finally, when I did an outreach program on campus, Jews -n- Java, I talked with Angela Addington, the manager of Nicolettis coffee shop to discuss any discounts or options of billing us for our weekly coffee hour.

Resources:
Santa Barbara Jewish Federation:
They have given us specific allocations in the past for students to attend Spitzer.  They also host a weekly Schmooze Room that meets on Wednesdays. This is a time for the Jewish Senior citizens to get together and hang out.  Its a great way for students to interact with our older seniors.  They have a plethora of programs going on, so its best to get on their mailing list or check out the
SBJF website

J-Connect:

This is the local young Jewish professional/student group in town for people in their 20s and 30s.  They sometimes get together for social nights, either at a bar, or bowling or something else.  To get connected, I would recommend calling the Santa Barbara Jewish Federation.

Synagogues/Minyanim:

Congregation B'nai B'rith:  This is the Reform congregation in town.  Many students teach there, either Hebrew or Sunday school, and some teach students in the academy program (7th through 9th grade).

Chabad of Santa Barbara:  This is the ultra-Orthodox group of Santa Barbara.  One of the Rabbis who is part of this group (Rabbi Mendel) lives in IV and comes to our Orthodox minyan every Friday evening.  He and his wife Rochel also sponsor many programs that are related to Jewish holidays.

Young Israel:  This is the Orthodox synagogue on the Mesa.  It is a very small place, but the people there are nice.  Rabbi Zev Schwartz is the rabbi there.  They host Shabbat services and dinner on Friday nights and Shabbat morning services as well. Call (805)966-4565 for more info.

Isla Vista Minyan: This is an egalitarian minyan that meets every Saturday morning at Hillel at 10 am.  It is not associated with any movement, but I would say the members tend to be more traditional than those who attend Congregation Bnai Brith and less traditional than the Orthodox synagogues.  It is a nice potpourri of people who are very open to different types of people, and its a family atmosphere that sponsors a babysitting service and kiddush luncheon afterwards.

Food Ordering:

West Pico:
This is the place where we order our kosher food, both for the regular week and for Passover.  We get our deliveries every Monday, so be sure to check with Jocelyne well in advance to see when she places the order.  Also, its good to order more than a week in advance, because they are notorious about forgetting orders.
Jordanos:
This is the place where we order the rest of our food, produce, etc. that does not have to come from a kosher place, because by nature many of their products are kosher (produce, fish, coffee, teas, paper goods, etc.) They can deliver everyday, but its good to get an order compiled with Jocelyne ahead of time.

Partners:
Lisa from the LA JCRC is helpful in finding funding and programming ideas for our Spitzer trip, but Im not sure who will be taking over her job next year!  Her job is to help us make sure there are programs for Jewish students that relate to social justice and advocacy.  The Shalom Nature Center was a great resource for our Freshmen Retreat and other outdoor adventure programs.  Both the LA JCRC and Shalom Nature Center are part of the College Campus Initiative, and part of their mission is to help us with our programming as well!
