Student Groups
The crazy group who paraded around IV on Simchat Torah with the Torah
The Student Board:
This is a group of students who are elected at the end of each academic year to serve for the following academic year.  Thanks to Polly, Tami, Zack, Tobin, Richard, and Galeet for a great year.  The structure of the Student Board has been constantly changing, but for the upcoming 2004-2005 year, there are only 5 officers: President Gail, Vice President Jason, Treasurer Jeremy, Fundraiser Michael, and Publicity Gail.  This year will also highlight the addition of our Programming Board, a group of students who serve as chairs for their respective student group or program.  There will be about 30-40 people on the Programming Board at any given time, and will include positions such as American Students for Israel Chair, Rosh Chodesh Chair, Vocal Ensemble Chair, as well as Chairs for the Kosher Love Luau, Shabbat services, and Freshmen.  The student board meets once per week and is allocated a certain amount of money at the beginning of the year from the general Hillel budget, and each year they are responsible for deciding how this money is allocated, and how they can increase their budget.  The Student Board sponsors the Kosher Cookout each Monday night and many other programs and traditions for Jewish students of our community.

American Students for Israel (ASI):
This is a group of dynamic, passionate individuals who advocate on behalf of the state of Israel.  This group includes both conservatives and liberals, and typically they sponsor lectures, dinners and cultural events which highlight or advocate for Israel.  They are a strong group on campus; one could argue perhaps one of the best student Israel advocate groups in the country.  They meet each Wednesday at Hillel. For more info, check out their website at

The Jewish Womens Group:

This group is still trying to come up with an official name, but in general, it is made of a group of officers who meet and plan programs for women to come together and celebrate the new month (Rosh Chodesh).  This is a great alternative way to get women involved, as its both social and Jewish, but very relaxing and not intimidating.  For more info on the Jewish Womens Group and Programs that happened this year, click
here.

Freshmen Council:
This was a group formed at the beginning of the year to represent Jewish freshmen on campus and work together to sponsor programs in the residence halls and for freshmen to make them feel welcome in the Jewish community.  For more info on the Jewish Freshmen Council, click
here.

Vocal Ensemble:
This is small group who meets once per week to sing together and prepare music for different occasions. It is directed by Michael Sokol, a Jewish music professor at UCSB.  This year, they sang at Shabbats, our fundrasing event, and the Santa Barbara Jewish Festival.  This year the vocal ensemble was made of all women and that seems to be the trend followed from the past.  In the future, I would like to see the vocal ensemble sing at more programs and perhaps sing with other vocal groups on campus or open up other programs on campus.

Jewish Honor Society:
This was a very new group that just started this year.  Its a society of Jewish students who have at least junior standing and a 3.3 GPA.  They sponsor professional activities and plan to have their first group of inductees inducted in the Fall of 2004.  For more info on the Jewish Honor Society, click
here.
