Complete Set - "Awesome soundboard recording, possibly the best quality NMH bootleg in circulation. There is also a low-quality audience recording of this show. At the beginning, Jeff mentions Jeremy couldn't make it, so it's a slightly more stripped-down show than usual. Also, Jeff says he and Scott have the flu, so he apologizes for a sloppy show. And he apologizes for his voice several times throughout the show."

When It All Caved In (live rarities & final show)
- "The holy grail of Neutral Milk Hotel bootlegs? I had heard about a fabled performance by Jeff Mangum in New Zealand in 2001 where he took a brief respite from reclusion for one night to once again perform NMH songs...his only show in the past several years. Fans can only hope Jeff decides to return to performing one day, but as it stands, the New Zealand show is regarded as the final Neutral Milk Hotel performance. Being a somewhat obsessed NMH fan and bootleg collector, it was a dream of mine to find a recording of the show, though I didn't have much faith in that ever happening. ...So words can't express my exhilaration when I was finally able to track it down. And not only did I find a recording of it, but an amazing quality soundboard recording.. probably the best sounding NMH bootleg I've heard!...It's basically a solo Jeff Mangum show under the name ‘World of Wild Beards Incorporated’. Jeff was joined by mulit-instrumentalist Laura Carter on a few songs. Chris Knox joins for the last song (a John Lennon cover). Here is a link to a review and some pictures from the show." - Includes nine cuts from hard to find live venues (I've only got a couple of them).

Rehearsals 1981-1984 - 35 minutes - "As I know, this is the 3rd New Order performance ever. Unusally for this period they are talking between every song, but sometimes hard to understand. This gig has interesting versions of every song because New Order was just a trio at this point of date. Great version of Sister-ray. Sounds nearly like VU in person. I would rate the sound 7-8 out of 10." - Source: unknown aud unknown gen TDK AD 90/JVC TD-X203/SB Live5.1/Magix Music Cleaning Lab (NO EDIT)/wav/flac (level 8) - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

Complete Set - "Fascinating document in New Order's live history in many ways. To say they sounded raw and under-rehearsed here is an understatement! Still compelling listening at times, when you consider what they went through just months earlier, having to pick up the pieces etc. IALP is played with a drum machine - due to the fact that it's said that Steve was singing. I'm not convinced myself. The shit really hits the fan when Hooky attempts to sing! Steve is also said to have sung Truth, but if this is the case he sounds a lot like Barney to me! On this tour the band managed to have all their gear nicked! Imagine - all the original guitars, keyboards etc used in Joy Division!! So Hooky had to play on a borrowed 4 string songs which he would normally tackle on his Shergold 6 string. that's why Cries & Whispers and Dreams Never End sound so "odd". Either way this show is essential for collectors and certainly worth a listen. The quality is pretty good, considering! I cleaned up a bit of high end hiss via soundforge too." - Lineage: Low Gen CASS > Wav > Soundforge > FLAC - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

Complete Show - "Taken from an Maxell XLII tape, lineage unknown though it's unlikely to be first generation - you can clearly hear the inbetween song banter - Quality of this otherwise is similar to other '80 New Order gigs, the recording appears to have been monaural. No other processing other than level adjustment or tracking has been done to the source, opening up the possibility for somebody else to remaster this one at some later point. Still, I reckon this is very listenable. Third gig as a four-piece. Live debut of "The Him" and "Procession". New Order appears to have had significant problems with their monitors, due to the feedback audible throughout and the numerous comments about their foldbacks. And an early example of the legendary wit and wisdom of Herr Albrecht: 'Sorry if you were expecting any, uh, Joy Division songs. Well, not really, I know we're not playing them.'." - Lineage: Source Cassette (M?) > WAV > Nero WaveEdit (to fix levels) > CD WAVE (tracking) > FLAC (level 8) - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

Rehearsals 1981-1984 - "There's an interesting story to this. Apparently, this is a part of a set of tapes which was "discovered" in New Order's rehearsal studios and (eventually) sold on Ebay to David Sultan (of worldinmotion.net, FAC441, fame). much to the disgust of certain members of the group. The Ritz

Complete Set - "This gig sees New Order as noise terrorists! Just about everything that can go wrong, does go wrong here. The first couple of minutes of Hurt (debuted here at the Ritz) has to do battle with the hapless dj still playing music over the p.a.! Then the "hum" prevailent throughout a lot of the gig starts at the beginning of In A Lonely Place - an annoying hum going through the p.a. which the tape picks up! Barney eventually suggests to the sound guy to turn off ALL the lights - that seems to do the trick. There's a classic Gillian-related blooper - she plays Senses in the wrong key, for the duration of the entire song! But in typical New Order style they turn disaster into triumph by playing what is in my opinion one of THE most powerful live performances they ever gave, in Everything's Gone Green. Well, a piece of sonic experimantalism loosely based on Everything's Gone Green, at least. It's so powerful it hurts!! It thunders along relentlessly for 15 minutes like a juggernaut - play this one LOUD and see what I mean! The quality, despite the p.a. problems, is in my view pretty good - on a par with Hull '82 I would say. Plus this tape has some amusing audience banter (including some booing at the end of the set - surely a first for a New Order recording?!).". - 2nd gen Cass > Wav > FLAC - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

If it wasn't for this taper there would be hardly any decent quality recordings from this era. Therefore to get lower generation copies would be awesome. Recorded on slightly inferior tape to begin with I suspect, and is hissy as a result. As a result I cleaned this one up on Soundforge - this is against my normal principles to clean it up but this is for those people without the know-how or softare to do so themselves! Don't expect digital FM quality - it is more than passable though. A nice fast-paced set (as were all New Order's gigs around this period) - the gig is noteable for the 2nd ever performance of The Village. This raw version sounds much nicer to my ears....The edits are a bit wonky in places - I suspect this is more to do with the original broadcast." - Lineage: FM > 2nd Gen Cass > Wav > FLAC - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

This is a very special release, as it represents a heretofore uncirculated source of a gig that was thought to not have been taped. KUdos go out to Juha who generously made this available to myself and the NO/JD trading community. While the SQ was very good to start out with, it has been made even better throughthe efforts of Drew Crumbaugh, who took the time to remaster this from the digital copy which Juha provided me. See http://drewc.dyndns.org/provinssirock_remastering.htm for the settings he used here. Be aware that for much of this gig, there is fairly loud buzzing through the PA which was driving both the audience and sound crew bonkers. Even so, this is very listenable, with notable versions of We All Stand and especially 586, in superior pre-PCL form. New Order say not a word. Futurama IV - "Well, here it is, then: the band's 1982 return to the Futurama Festival. Far from being "a pristine soundboard" recording, this is a great sounding, but rough audience recording, with the music coming out right in your face and the vocals a bit distant. I have a feeling the sound in the venue must have been very loud; you can tell the taper's machine had some issues adjusting to it after the tape flip, during EGG. This is the best version I've heard so far, but it's still a bit hissy for what's supposed to be a soundboard. Sound has better dynamics than on the Confused Dreams bootleg, and none of the essential between-song banter is cut here. Rumor has it this gig was made readily available to maximize the humiliationof Mark Johnson, who had his scooter hoisted for purportedly obstructing one of the trucks (It's his license plate number they're reading before the start of We All Stand. The performance is amzaing, equally as good if not better than Kilkenny, with perhaps the best Dreams Never End ever. Unusual in that there are two versions of Blue Monday, one being the "Top Of The Pops" edit, the other the regular versions brought out for the encore. So, if you're not a fan of that track, this one's not for you. Senses has an extra verse with different lyrics, Hurt has an interesting intro, and 586 has a Gillian howler as she triggers the intro to Hurt by mistake. Bernard was none too pleased with that as he then asks the crowd, "Why do women have legs? So they don't leave a trail like a slug." seeding, I performed timing discipline checks against some of the sequenced tunes (BM, AoC, KW1) and determined I had overcorrected this a bit, so it's probably closer to three-quarters of a semitone fast. Not much more processing than that. Features the debut of Elegia. Somewhat marred (or made more interesting) by something packing it up during the intro of Blue Monday and the extended intro to The Perfect Kiss. The sound of fans chanting along to Thieves Like Us is awe-inspiring. Barney tells an off-color joke at the start of their encore, " Hear about the Ethopian prostitute? She had more men than hot dinners." For years, I thought he was saying GUINESS instead of DINNERS, shows you
what a git I am. The sound quality is simply amazing for an audience recording. In fact,
I prefer this one to a lot of the '85 soundboards because you feel like you are down in front pogoing with the other punters. I've also appended the Radio Clyde interview (first with Hooky and then Barney) that was done during the soundcheck. If you listen to Barney's part of the interview, you can hear them checking drum levels. You'll need two CDs to fit this if you burn in CD audio format.". - Lineage: M/1 (perhaps even M/0) > CD-R (1-2 copies) > EAC (secure)> CD WAVE (tracking) > Nero Wave Editor (pitch adjustment) > FLAC taped by: Malcolm Beaton - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

If you want to fit this on one CD, the long breaks are easily removed to bring the total gig to under 80 minutes. There are some other differences between this and the "PFD" audio - namely, it's quite obvious when doing an A/B comparison that there were two different mixes used for the two recordings. The PFD audio sounds heavily compressed (as you'd expect for a professional release) and there are other differences here and there. What we have here, in this ATR/Stash mixing desk tape, is the raw, unexpurgated show as performed with zero post processing applied. Age Of Consent is missing the first second or so of Hooky's bass intro, probably because whomever was manning the mixing desk didn't get the tape flipped in time. It lines up almost exactly where a C90 tape would need flipping." - Source: ATR-STASH mixer Lineage: SBD (ATR-STASH box-o-tapes) --> ??? --> FLAC via Sam (lammah) --> SoundForge (to fix DC offset and remove old SBEs) --> CD Wave (re-tracksplitting) --> --> FLACd - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

You can hear Hooky's off-mic count-in at the start of Let's Go, for instance. Fairly unusual in that the Order decided to open with Temptation, and a very notable version of Sister Ray with different bass sonics than anywhere else. Gig is also notable in that it was five years to the day that Ian Curtis took his own life, though We All Stand is dedicated to Elvis Presley instead. Like the 17 MAY 1985 gig, this was about half a semitone too fast, and a bit unbalanced toward the right channel. The tape is in phase, though. This one has been maligned somewhat, while it is perhaps the least energetic of the bunch, it does feature an excellent version of Ceremony and the final ever rendition of "The Him". The sound quality is very good, though it is a notch below the Melbourne and Sydney gigs before. One interesting thing during these Australian gigs is Hooky's bass sound, it is very different than elsewhere. I don't know or remember exactly what happened to cause this. A note about track #12: this was edited out of the cassette I pulled the rest of the tracks from. It is present on a CD which contains the same source, but apparently has been subjected to a band-pass filter that stripped off the higher frequencies." - lineage: source cassette (low-gen) > WAV (Nero WaveEdit) > CD Wave (tracking) > FLAC (level 8) except * ? > CD-R > EAC (secure) > Nero WaveEdit (EQ, levelling, join with tracks 11 and 13 from other source to avoid SBEs) > CD Wave (tracking) > FLAC (level 8) - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

Complete Set - "Another great ATR/STASH recording, however, unlike the other ATR/STASH soundboards posted recently, this did NOT originate in the Whittaker "box of tapes". ATR acquired this via other means although it is just as good quality sound-wise, if not better, than many of the "box-o-tapes" shows. The venue information, and even the date, are not absolutely 100% confirmed. ATR received this labeled as "OZ/NZ 85?" and the detectives on neworderonline.com narrowed it down with 90-95% certainty to this 8/11/85 Atlanta gig (quite a stretch geographically from Aus/New Zealand but there you go). See this thread on neworderonline.com for details and the detective work-in-progress: http://www.neworderonline.com/MessageList.aspx?ThreadID=11739 - Quite possibly one of the worst gigs New Order have ever performed, and for that reason alone this is a fascinating document to listen to. There're mistakes all over the place, on just about every song, but nothing in this world matches the utter train wreck that Chosen Time would become..."Chosen Time" might as well be from another planet, it's so incredibly bad. Either perversely or just because of the drugs, Gillian plays the ENTIRE synth riff throughout the song in a different key - you'd think she'd notice after the first, oh, 1:30 or so but no! she charges on, even with Barney's continued laughing and giggling at how astonishingly awful it is throughout the song. Every time I listen to this I just imagine the looks Barney must be shooting at Gillian. Barney doesn't even try to play the right guitarlines here, because I imagine he just decided he'd have fun with it, or that they would just sound horrible contrasting with Gillian's incompetence ;) The theory that this gig fits the Atlanta 8/11/85 idea is strengthened by the fact that on 8/12/85 in New Orleans, LA they perform "Chosen Time" perfectly, in fact one of the best versions of the song I've ever heard. And that was it - the last time it's played. It's quite likely they worked on it at soundcheck that next night in New Orleans and played it at the gig just to prove they could, and then retired it.". - Source: ATR-STASH mixer - Lineage: SBD (ATR-STASH tape) --> ??? --> FLAC via Sam (lammah) --> SoundForge (to fix DC offset and remove old SBEs) --> CD Wave (re-tracksplitting) --> FLAC - Actual lineage likely thus: SBD (band's CASS(0) or CASS(1) copy thereof) --> CDR --> CDR --> CDR --> FLAC - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

Complete Set - Includes the Soundcheck - "Soundcheck tracks are different source than gig tracks (EQ differs, tonal qualities differ) This gig is ranked by many New Order fans to be part of the Top Ten Gigs of all time, and in fact many (myself included) consider this gig to be the best of their 1985 soundboards *by far*. For many reasons this gig is a **must have** for all New Order fans. The first 8 tracks of the gig itself were bootlegged as the vinyl LP boot "More Than Despair"in the mid-to-late 1980s, but the last 2 were unavailable for years until recently. However, *NONE OF THIS SEED WAS SOURCED FROM VINYL!*. Rather, it's likely the same source was used years back to master the vinyl itself as the vinyl versions sound remarkably similar in all ways to this source seeded here. There's a long and drawn out story behind getting this source to be seedworthy but I'll just say there's no better version out there unless you own the master tape or a 1st gen copy! It's likely *ALL* digital copies of this source, until now, are full of glitches and skips - and it's not likely at all that we'll get a perfect copy from the band's cassette master, ever." - Source: ATR-STASH mixer (?) - Lineage: SBD (ATR-TASH tape) --> ??? --> FLAC via Sam (lammah) --> --> SoundForge (pitch correction, glitch removal, missing bits patching, levels, remove old SBEs) --> CD Wave (re-tracksplitting) --> FLAC - Per Sam, the actual lineage for where I have "???" is most likely thus: SBD (band's CASS(0) or CASS(1) copy thereof) --> CDR --> CDR --> FLAC --> ... (detailed above) (there is some debate as to whether ATR's tape was M0 or M1 or even possibly M2)C - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

However, there is the most gawdawful diginoise (probably incurred during the original transfer from tape) during the latter third of Temptation. Complete Set - "Lineage is the same stash-o-soundboards from (most likely) Hooky's Suite 16 recording studio, liberated by Brian Whittaker (Revenge touring bassist) via eBay, but previous to selling copies amongst the NO trading community in the UK. From a post by OldMonkey on STG:" A box of mixing desk tapes was found in a rehearsal studio used by Peter Hook. They were advertised on E-bay by Brian Whittaker, former Revenge live guitarist. David Sultan of the website "World in Motion" paid over £500 to win the auction. Before they were sent to David though, they were copied amongst the Manchester bootlegging fraternity, and are now widely available in the UK and wider. Coincidentally (or otherwise, and this is where it gets good), the majority of the shows in this box were the complete gigs from the tracks used on the live disc of Retro (plus quite a few other gigs). It appears as though Hooky meant for them to find their way to the bootleg hardcore......." - Source: ATR-STASH mixer - Lineage: SBD (ATR-STASH box-o-tapes) --> ??? --> FLAC via Sam (lammah) --> SoundForge (to fix DC offset) --> CD Wave (re-tracksplitting) --> FLAC - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

One minor note, on the original ATR/STASH tape "The Village" was missing its last ten seconds or so of audio (probably due to an A/B flip on the original mixing desk tape), but the version here has the missing bit absolutely perfectly spliced in from the audio portion of the broadcast (this gig was broadcast on Belgian radio, as well as on Belgian television). Not sure whether the splice was from the audio or the video, but no matter, whomever fixed it did it perfectly and it sounds really good." - Source: ATR-STASH mixer Lineage: SBD (ATR-STASH box-o-tapes) --> ??? --> FLAC via Sam (lammah) --> SoundForge (to fix DC offset) --> CD Wave (re-tracksplitting) --> FLAC - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

SECCstasy - "A two-sourcer,...featuring New Order live at the Glasgow S.E.C.C. The FM broadcast was on a tape I had lying around, which was labelled 'F.M. A- Dolby B'...sounding about second generation. The audience tape is first generation, and was taped by Malcolm Beaton, source taper for other fine New Order gigs. I rate the audience tape as superior, not because it is unexpunged but because it has better dynamics. This one's a corker if you're a fan of the Technique album, and features a classic introduction by the one and only Alan Wise. The FM version leaves out the debut performance of All The Way, probably because it's a cock-up as Bernard says, 'Sorry about that. I admit that it was shit. The next one's gonna be good through, because it's all done on computers.' Also features the debut of Run and Loveless, the latter (amazingly) only aired one time afterwards. So the version heard here is likely the only place you will hear this in good quality..." - Lineage (disc 1 aud): M0 > WAV > CD-R (x3?) > EAC (secure) > Nero wav editor (to fix pitch/volume) > CD WAV (tracking) > FLAC (level 8) taped by: Malcolm Beaton - Lineage (disc 2 FM): broadcast > M2 > WAV > CD-R > EAC (secure+SBEfix) > FLAC (Level 8) taped from FM broadcastC - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

Complete Set - "I suspect these are DAT-sourced,.... This one isn't perfect...there's some weird diginoise and even a bit of skipping at the end of track 12 (BLT) and the start of track 13 (Blue Monday). As far as I know, they are also on the upstream copies. I don't know if Drew managed to clean these up before seeding if it is at all possible...in fact what we hear may have been the result of a cleanup to salvage what otherwise would have had to be binned. I personally would have preferred to wait a bit and see about cleaning it up some more, but no matter. What's interesting is that the last track (Fine Time) is the same version as on Retro, except that Retro wrongly attributes it to 30 Jun 89 Chicago instead of Cuyahoga Falls, and criminally crossfades into canned audience cheering instead of preserving Hooky's ending solo. The Masquerade - Complete Set - "The recording is from the soundboard, however, the drums aren't mixed properly and sound like they might have been coming through one of the microphones. Chad sounds like he's hitting cardboard boxes, and the cymbols sound muffled. The first track ("Love Buzz") starts from the middle of the song, and there is a pressing error that causes a blank span of 1 second towards the end of "Stain". There are also 2 places during "Love Buzz" where there is extra "crackle". These complaints aside, this is a very good disc. "
