Daniel Johnston
02/04/90
WFMU-FM
East Orange, NJ
Complete Set - "My brother gave me this cassette about 6 years ago. It was his Master Recording of Daniel Johnston's phone in appearance on WFMU's Music Faucet program. One tune of this broadcast has been released as a vinyl single and on Yo La Tengo's Genius+Love album. When listening to the recording on Yo La Tengo's album I noticed it sounded a bit faster, evident in the register of the DJs voice. I toyed with raising the pitch of the whole set to match it (+2% sounded about right) but since I don't have perfect pitch I decided to leave it alone. I've been used to the way the cassette sounded and who knows maybe those sly Hobokeners speed up the tape for their release. It sounds fine and natural to me anyway. And dare I say Yo La Tengo's release has more hiss than the untouched tape I present here. There is also a tape flip between tracks 14 and 15 losing perhaps a second or 2." - Source: FM Radio Broadcast > Cassette > WAV > CDR - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV - LF-10

Studio Sessions - "01 - Picadilly Radio Session. Recorded at Pennine Sound Studios, Oldham on June 4, 1979. Produced by Stuart James. The other tracks from this session were released on HEART AND SOUL: These Days, Candidate, The Only Mistake, Chance (Atmosphere). 02 & 03 - Transmission Sessions 1. Recorded at Central Sound Studios, Manchester on July 4th 1979 (according to this bootleg). Produced by Martin Hannett. The other tracks from this session were released on HEART AND SOUL: Dead Souls, Something Must Break. The sound quality is a definite upgrade over others I've heard. However, there's a glitch during Novelty around the 2:15 mark. It's in the original source file unfortunately... sounds like maybe it was recorded from vinyl and the vinyl skipped." - Lineage: CDR > WAV (EAC secure) > FLAC (Level 8) - Available in FLAC or Audio WAV

Having listened to (other) versions of this from proper bootlegs, I have come to the conclusion that my cassette copy is far superior. Hope you agree. This is Joy Division in their rawest form. bootleg LPs featuring this gig have slightly worse sound than the live tracks from this concert featured on the Heart And Soul boxset. 'Shadowplay' is the only song from this gig that hasn't been released officially. Transmission, which was also left off the Heart And Soul live CD, is availabe on the Atmosphere CD EP (Facd 213) from 1988 - Notes: This concert marks the beginning of a new era: 444 attended the show which was almost as many as Buzzcocks the night before; JOY DIVISION were now one of the best known Manchester bands!"

It's such a vast improvement on the "common" source it may as well be a different gig! And what a gig!! This is Joy Division at their very best - an awesome show. Storming rendition of Interzone for the encore If you listen to the tape Ian's microphone isn't up for the first verse or two but comes back in with "but I had no time too lose" half way. Complete Set - Excellent sound possibly soundboard(?) - Carlos van Hijfte was at the concert: " The Effenaar capacity was at that time around 500, I think on the 18th there were about 300-350 people. One thing about that night that everyone remembers was a bunch of local hooligans came to the gig and started parading through the audience causing a lot of fear. After about 10 minutes they left, I think even without hitting anyone (unusal even for those days). The band also noticed this and that is the reason for Hook’s long intro for Dead Souls, he got nervous and didn’t know anything else to do but play one note for a couple of minutes."

Ajanta (Cinema) Theatre
Derby, England
A Journey That Leads To The Sun - Part 2 - "For your interest I might just mention that I've always seen this gig referred to as the Ajanta Theatre, but back then we all knew it as the Ajanta Cinema. The name is an Indian name because it used to show Indian films, because Derby had (and has) quite a large Indian and Pakistani community. The cinema itself was just outside the town centre, and at that time pretty much stood on its own, as I remember. That remoteness - and the fact that it was a bit run down and seedy - made it ideal for holding punk gigs. I saw quite a few bands there between1978-80, including ATV, Stiff Little Fingers, The Lurkers, Manicured Noise, The Pop Group, The Slits, The Mekons. I'd say Joy Division were the biggest name band that played there (especially as it was so late in their history).
